Intangible: “That which cannot be easily defined, formulated or grasped, vague"
    Synopsis:
Psychotropic Films (tm) presents a Bart Santello digital motion picture - "Intangible", a unique an original assembly of decades-old 8mm film. Fragmented images of fading memory, embodied in decaying film, chosen for their visual texture & artistic quality are presented in a dream-like sequence, that awakens perceptions of a past long forgotten by time.
    Music:
Imagery for this work was choreographed to a psycho-active score by renowned ambient electronic musicians 'APRODUCE' (Barry Craig) & Loren Nerell.
    Story Behind the Music:
Back in 2010 when I was reviewing found 8mm footage, Barry Craig sent me a work-in-progress MP3 of a song he was developing with Loren Nerrell for a forthcoming album. I put on headset and listened to the song as I was digitally editing the vintage 8mm film. It struck me that the music beautifully matched the fragments of textured footage I was assembling. I named the film "Intangible" (for reasons discussed here in the synopsis), and later Barry and Loren came to name both the song and album "Intangible." That's how things come together.
    Director’s Comments:
Intangible is presented in a style and manner that provides the viewer contemplative space in which to reinterpret the work into their own perspective. I want to give the audience a sense while watching this film, that they are awake inside a dream.
    Background on the film’s concept:
Film as an ephemeral technology to store memories:
Through film - a technology by which memories are stored and released. Before technology, what was stored in our memory came from oral traditions or written word passed-on by generations. The power of film is that it can be repeated and the imagery imbued in film become symbols in the mythology we create for ourselves, our society and our history.
    Film as an aesthetic (artistic):
Technical aspects in creating this film focused on identifying artistic elements of the source material, embracing filmic textures, faded colors and natural decay of the film stock. The challenge then was how to take common and seemingly uninspired images and create meaning from them and release their artistic potential.
    About Bart Santello:
Bart Santello (Arizona) has varied interests such as filmmaking, photography, natural building and solar power. His work in film is a non-narrative style of imagery and sound for artistic expression. Other projects with film emphasize digital restoration and preservation of historical, industrial and personal vintage film. Bart is currently working on restoring a 1918 Silent Era movie filmed in Arizona called “The Trail to Yesterday”. Previous short works include: Man Trap, Outskirts of Infinity, Road Storm, Mzungu and Controlled Bleeding.
