Glad your doing a series on back to basic. It’s good for beginners but also good for experienced pilots. To brush up and be reminded of things taken for granted.

Great advice! Just something that I’d like to add to skill #4, smooth gimbal motion. The setting that allows you to control the speed in which your gimbal/camera moves, and also how fast it stops when you have your finger on the gimbal wheel. I believe that beginners should be aware of this setting, and start off at a slower rate than what the default speed is set at. This is crucial if mastering cinematic moves is what your trying to achieve.

This was probably the biggest change I made to improve my video. When I'm flying and shooting stills, it's annoying to have to wait while I survey the ground below me, but then I remember to use my hat controller to force the gimbal down immediately and I'm happy again. LOL

I wanted to thank you for your video about the drone due to the fact, I just got into flying a drone just before Christmas and I did Exactly what I wasn’t supposed to do. I lost my first drone. Amazon did replace it which I’m very grateful that they did do it so when I got the second one I was determined to make the same mistake so I started watching a lot of videos. I also watched my drone in the house. My wife is laughing because she was there when I lost my first drone as well. White point this is a phenomenal teacher I like the way you teach your videos I have been doing what you suggested by many other different teachings on CZcams but I can see yours the best of all of all the teachings I’ve seen so I’m gonna subscribe to your channel. I also picked up a standard size. I have a mini throne and also a standard I am reading the manual on the new drone and I’m also taking what I hear from CZcams and practicing. I do have a suggestion for people over 50 years old getting into it since I am maybe you could do a video gear or something like that so people could get into it please keep up the great teachings.

I've not gotten off to a good start. Bought & received a DJI Mini 2. Had problems getting set up on the app. Made contact with them only to have them suggest that I get a new phone. I declined going through all of that just to fly a drone around. Returned it & went back to YT for several more days to find something else. At least I knew about what I was looking for. I decided on a Hubsan Zino Mini SE. It arrived yesterday. I got it all charged last night & sat down this morning to get it all connected. It wouldn't & I tried to follow the tutorials. Not a lot of help for me. Can't find a US support number that works to call. They're probably getting it back.
So now, I watch all you guys unbox, connect & fly. I've now had 2 drones in my hand & have barely been able to charge all of the components & get it turned on.
Are there any suggestions as to where I go from here? I really want to participate, but can't seem get "off the ground".
I really like this video, Russ. Newbies really need to see/hear this. I do have one comment to add, however, for the very first time the drone is flown. When it was tested, it is pretty safe to presume that its compass was calibrated a significant distance from where its virgin launch by the new owner will take place. I would never launch a new drone without making sure its compass was calibrated to WHERE I WILL BE FLYING IT FROM. Additionally, there's been lots of jostling and time passed since the IMU was calibrated. Again, before its virgin flight, I would also calibrate the IMU freshly. In flying manned aircraft, we are taught about magnetic variations and such as we change our locations over long distances. Hence we have to take care inhow we trust - or not - our compasses. Taking care to make sure the compass is right will not only help keep your initial flight safer, it is also better insurance that it will remember precisely where it is and remember its RTH point more precisely.
I used the Heli-X simulator with a cheap USB controller to practice on my PC and gain confidence. In particular, I would fly out far enough that I could no longer see the orientation of the drone by eye, then spin it around sufficiently that I have no idea what direction it's pointing in, and practice bringing it back home manually. Mastering that technique stopped me from worrying quite so much when flying in the real world.
Great idea, Russ! A good primer. I would like to echo on a previous comment. Here in the U.S., the need to register and take the TRUST exam should be basic.
I'd like to add one more. Be sure that you fly in approved spaces! There can be local rules as well as no-fly-zones that can get a newbie in serious trouble. Get to know and use LAANC! Again, we are referring to flying in the U.S.. Thanks again for your advice!

Flying a drone is the new Golf. You send a round thing out into their sky snd walk to where you think it went only to loose it in the pond. The walk of shame! Or at least it was for me. I love this hobby now. Thank You for this vid!

The tip about sport mode saved my mini 2 when the wind decided it would be happier in a tree couldn't get control but sport mode did it
I think it’s great that you acknowledge that newbie drone pilots have anxieties about flying. One that’s bothered me is thinking that someone is going to approach me for being in the wrong place or doing something wrong (like flying over people). This video helped me get a more secure footing in drone flying so I don’t worry about other things. Thanks!

My goodness Russ, this is me for last few years. Not ready to launch my Mavic Pro. But I am determined to fly very soon before remote ID grounds me.
As a young RC pilot, one trick I learned was when flying at myself, was to push the stick into the wing that was dipping. I guess things you learn as a teen are easier to remember, than when you are an old dog like me. As I wish I learned touch typing in school, or spanish :) who knew in the 60's such knowledge would be so important....

Thanks for these tips- I'm a new drone owner. With the many videos I've watched, I'd heard most of them before, but all great tips. Yes, I was VERY tempted to fire it up in my office the other day when unpacking. I decided it was a bad idea. I've done some sim time and excited to fly it this weekend.
A reason for hovering low for a moment is to correctly set RTH, return to home. If needed this will be what will save it from fly away.
The DJI cyber nanny is fantastic indoors! I have never crashed my drone indoors ever because the drone is so perfectly smooth and stable inside! I only crashed the drone once outside during a demonstration but that was due to low battery 🔋 power. Never fly your drone unless you have at least 30 percent battery. At 6 percent battery 🔋 the drone falls out of the sky 🌌.

I know this video is two years old. My original dji four drone was stolen so i did not want to get back into drones for a bit. Anyways, i felt the need to study for the 107 exam to learn more and how to protect myself, others around me, the laws and drone alike so I studied for 9 days and opted to take the test recently. I successfully passed the exam and just waiting for the license to come in the mail bere soon.
Here is the kicker, i have hardly any flight time only a couple hours at max so i am doing it when i can to get more comfortable and less nervous with losing my training drone before i invest in another dji.
Some of the topics you covered, I have already started doing and will continue to do untill i am more comfortable. Some of the topics you covered, I have not done so i for sure will and thank you, i am subbing and checking out those other videos in the description. Please keep updating and teaching the drone community!

@@w.e.s. my original DJI phantom 4 was stolen by someone the family trusted before I could even use it. I am as of tomorrow receiving a second phantom 4 and this one is not going to be loaned out to anyone
Plus I will be getting a DJI mini 4 and two other DJI but in time not all at once. The DJI that's coming tomorrow is being fit with a light weight very powerful thermo camera as well. You may already know that drones with thermo cost a lot of money as it is already. Using that feature however for search and rescue and such .
I'm a new pilot and so are two of my business associates. We are using your videos to help us get started the right way. Thanks for this video and re-enforcing the basics.

Very nice tutorial. One thing I have noticed about all the tutorials is that no one shows how to dp a emergency stop of the drone. I figured it out very quickly. But other people might not. If it looks like you are going to run into something, release the toggles and the drone should hover.

Wish I had seen this when it came out. Just took me drone out for the first time after it sat in the box for a year and a half, due to my anxieties over losing it. Eventually I realized, if I never take it out I might as well be lost already. Only flew it for a few minutes last time, hoping to take it out again today and maybe go through a few batteries of fly time.

great video!! back to the basics! As a musician sometimes you get should i say," sloppy", and just need to regroup and get back to rudimentals! Dump the effects and over thinking,, just practice the basic "moves"..
I just have one thing to add and only because I have been flying for over 40 years when I teach people I always tell them to fly using the pinch of the sticks method, just like holding a pen to write your not just twice more accurate your actually magnitudes more accurate think of using a pen strapped to your thumb, using two is always better than 1, like shooting a rifle with one or two hands or pulling a splinter out using a needle you wouldn’t even think of using just one finger to do that type of accurate move.

Yes - Don't rush you're flight ... I did charged up. Only one battery got updated firmware. I flew on last battery, and it was erratic - Nearly lost a finger!!

Nice info, love your content, I really believe all new recreational pilots should consider getting the DJI care insurance 1st, register if necessary and to take the Trust certification exam before that first take off. Just my opin.
I think the biggest thing is flying towards you is where the most trouble come from at first. I used to fly RC planes. The mind set I had was when the plane comes around towards you and your facing straight on to it out of a turn and the wings are tilted. You just needed to move the aileron gimble towards the low wing. That would level out the plain and you'd be on your way. The only way to translate this into drone flying is to steer into the direction as it's coming towards you by moving the gimble towards the direction that your trying keep away from.

What about a Preflight Checklist? Our Club checklist has 31 points from upgrading software and charging to weather, condition of drone and pilot, flight plan (controlled airspace) all the way to putting away the drone back home. Flight plans for beginners help them accomplish all they are looking for in a flight. Developing a scan from screen to drone (VLOS) and back is good training. Be familiar with all the menus, all the icons and all the controls before you put on the props and lift off. Taking off the props and following along with the videos or courses really helps you learn the icons and controls. Thank you for the introduction. We are slowly building a club training video library for beginners and to teach skills to advanced pilots. I will be following your courses as you develop them.
I had my in beginner mode for 2 days. Prior to that I used to fly a computer simulator called "Real Flight".
Remember on DJI drones the side collision radar sensors do not operate in GPS Position mode.
Only in Tri-pod mode.
Since last Christmas, when I got my DJI Mini 2, I have had 2 crashes both being motor failures as far as I know. The first one was on March 2021, and luckily it was not my fault and DJI replaced it for free. The second incident happened on December 5, and it is still being investigated by DJI, so wish me luck. I don't want to use one of my 3 care refreshes and spend 50 bucks. 😬 Definitely will follow these tips when I get my drone back.

I'd add, flying over water can get incredible shots, but also with considerable risk. I'd suggest "blue water opps" flight only after you have gotten more comfortable and have total confidence in your drone and your abilities.
great video something I would like is a better tracking video tituoral, as it took me so long to work out how to get it started as all the you tube clips just said tap on the object you want to track but nothing would happen. only found it by mistake that my range was to small. Thanks for getting back to the basics Russ. I am in the stage of not owning a drone but researching as much as I can before buying it. You did not cover registering the drone first. Should this be done before the first flight or just close to the time you buy it. Please keep some more beginner videos coming. BTW super cool that you would share other CZcamsrs videos. Class act!
I'm sure Russ will get back to you, but I want to let you know what I think you should do, especially if you end up purchasing a DJI drone. With a DJI product, it will pretty much make you register prior to taking flight. However, prior to registering, read up on additional warranties that are offered for your product. You want to have your mind made up on any additional warranty BEFORE registering your product. Why? Well once you register your drone, you only have 48 hours to purchase any additional warranty. If you allow 48 hours pass, you'll have to jump through a bunch of hoops to purchase any additional warranty (including making videos to send to DJI to prove you haven't damaged the equipment in any way). This happened to me because I let a day pass before I attempted to purchase the additional DJI Care Warranty. Turned out they had miscalculated the hours left - they weren't calculating the time difference correctly between the USA & China. They finally capitulated and sold me the warranty, but I went through 3 different service reps before I was assigned someone who finally understood the date/hours issue. Had I 1) registered the drone then immediately 2) purchased the additional warranty, I doubt I would have had any issue at all.
I'm sure that other high-end manufacturers are probably the same with regards to registering their products, you probably must register before being allowed to fly. I hope you pull the trigger and get yourself a drone soon. Because once you do, you'll kick yourself for ever waiting...they are so much fun and addictive! Good luck, Dave!
Personally, I wouldn't even consider coordinating the gimbal controls until you are very adept at controlling just the drone.
I've watched probably 20 videos on reviews and tutorials. I felt very confident when I launched my dji mini 2 3 days ago. However I have to send it back already. The camera doesn't ever focus. Had to learn to fly with out of focus live feed, photos and videos. Haha. But still manage. But I'm going to have withdrawals

I was wondering 51, cause I seriously trust your wide area of drone expertise, how long will brushless or brushed motors on drones last? How many cycles will a battery or intelligent battery last? I've seen some youtube commenters with thousands of kilometers on their drones, while some have drones that don't last 6 months. I guess I'm wondering if you'll do a video on these quality issues... or have you done one or two already? I've seen almost all ofyour videos and I just don't have these answers...

Please teach beginners how to use the Return to Home button. To make sure that they have enough altitude for it in the app, and then TRUST it. Too many beginner drone flyers that I know panic when they lose site of their drone. They push the Return to Home button. But then panic, override it and end up crashing the drone. Thanks.
Ha.. Fun story for my 3rd flight ever. Went down the street about 60' got disoriented, was only about 20' in the air, got scared and hit return to home. Had it set for 100'. It went UP into a tree and got stuck. That was a couple years ago. I'm sure every one has a good story or two as well.
@@JohnTye LOL! I have a friend who panicked and flew his into a pine tree 30 yards from the landing site. If only he had trusted the Return to Home it wouldn't have happened.

Good advice Russ but I have noticed that a lot of the lessons they show you how to move the drone forward, back, side to side but not how to turn the drone to the right or left.
Totally agree with flying low and slow but when I was a newbie i felt much safer getting my drone at 100' or so (i live in a heavily tree'd area) so that i knew i couldn't possibly run into anything. I was higher than anything around. Just my amateur 2 cents.
Hi there I have been flying a drone for about a year maybe a little less and I must say I'm loving this , but at the same time I want to follow all the rules and have fun getting great video footage and watching this video and other's of yours in this area helps me out big time so the only thing that I'm confused on is "I WANT TO CREATE DRONE AWARENESS OF DRONES in my area and post my video's on my facebook and youtube but i hear that the FAA can say once you post those video's its not for fun anymore and you need that part 107 am I right in thinking this????????

Recieved as gift. I operate "heavy" machinary at work. Decided to see if drone flying is for me.
I did notice my drone flies weird inside, didnt realize its because the gps cant really locate good.
I just got a cheap drone for now, but I want to buy a more expensive one over the spring/summer. The cheap one is more for practice just to get back into it. Might send some clips through Instagram or something

I saw someone else suggest this, but I'll reiterate the need for pre-flight check.
One other request: you've mentioned you have a document you keep on you to share if people try to talk to you while you're flying a mission. I would buy this off you. Same with your pre-flight checklist. Both in digital or printed form! (I'd like to eventually keep my pre-flight records in OneNote like I do my monthly inspections since I lose paper often.) Take my money! :)
