- Electric start (manual) for you generator or small engine.
Here I show you an assembly I put together to help me start my generator with a drill, but without a jerking shock when the motor starts.
This can be used on any tools with a small gas motor: chainsaw, lawn mower, snow blower ...
The assembly include a clutch that allows forced rotation in one sense and free rotation on the other.
Please be aware that you will need to figure out the rotation sense of your motor and set the directional clutch accordingly before using it.
Please be aware that this is just my experience, if you decide to try it, you do it on your own risk.
Parts used:
- directional clutch - do a google or amazon search for: "3/8-Inch Drive Ratcheting Adapter"
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01...
- drill adaptor for the clutch + adaptor for the motor nut : www.homedepot.com/p/Gator-Gri...
or
www.amazon.com/Universal-Sock...
- regular cordless drill - mine is a regular 20V cordless drill

This is awesome, had the idea of using a cordless drill but always feared the jerking effect when the engine actually starts. I am getting a directional clutch today.
You haven’t given a link to the most important part, the clutch assembly !
Awsome thanks for the rachet tip.. and having the link.
Useful on hard to start old equipment and for when my shoulder can't take anymore abuse.
Oh, I see you have given a link. Thanks.
bought the ratchet adapter from the same site, unfortunately it was defective. Going to source one locally.
Am surprised a drill could do this . Impact wrench , no problem . I will be trying this .
the cordless drills are powerful tools. they works very well for medium size generators, not sure for large engines
Thank you, but you haven’t explained how you made the clutch mechanism up !
Where do I buy one
Interesting, maybe a dumb dumb question is the drill in forward motion or reverse motion?
mine was set forward. it should match the direction in which the pull cord rotates the engine
@@svatasoiu thanks…
Where did you buy the clutch adapter?
I added the parts to the video description:
- directional clutch - www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01...
- drill adaptor for the clutch + adaptor for the motor nut : www.homedepot.com/p/Gator-Gri...
@@svatasoiu NEITHER ONE OF THEM SITES WILL WORK
@@ricktemple6469 do a search for "Performance Tool W38137 3/8" DR Ratcheting Adapter" on Amazon
and
"3/8 in. Universal Socket with Power Drill Adapter"
on Amazon or on the web and you will find them or equivalents
@@svatasoiu Thanks I did find it
Seems to spin in the same direction as the drill spun it. Just use a slightly over sized bit so you can just pull back off fast. But would recommend fixing your pull string.
What is the SIZE BATTERY(Volt) on your cordless battery? My 18 volt battery won't turn the engine over for my generac 5500. Thx!
I have a 20V Black and decker drill - your engine may be bigger as I have a 3500W (4300W starting) generator. Is your battery old? I think it still should work
@@svatasoiu I’m going to fully charge the battery and try again. I installed a natural gas conversion kit so the generator runs on natural gas. It takes a while to pull start it over and over again, tiring and a pain in the ass! I’m waiting on my ratcheting adapter to come in the mail. Thx for your help! Great video! 👍
That is a horable running engine. It should not need to be turned over that much, even after sitting through the winter.
the engine starts fine, I just forgot to apply the choke at the beginning
you could have started that thing 10 times by then. Its so much simpler to just pull the cord. If it doesn't start on the 1st or 2nd pull, your doing it wrong.
this is when your pull cord is broke or does not work - just an alternative
Go karts
When your cold engine oil makes it hard to pull the rope, this idea will save the day.
Lmao this is the only way my generator will start in the freezing cold. Once warmed up, it starts with the pull cord.
Or your equipment is older, and a bit out of tune, definitely WON'T start with about 10 pulls.
