Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
Fat man looking in a blade of steel
Thin man looking at his last meal
Hollow man looking in a cotton field
For dignity
[Verse 2]
Wise man looking in a blade of grass
Young man looking in the shadows that pass
Poor man looking through painted glass
For dignity
[Verse 3]
Somebody got murdered on New Year’s Eve
Somebody said dignity was the first to leave
I went into the city, went into the town
Went into the land of the midnight sun
[Verse 4]
Searching high, searching low
Searching everywhere I know
Asking the cops wherever I go
Have you seen dignity?
[Verse 5]
Blind man breaking out of a trance
Puts both his hands in the pockets of chance
Hoping to find one circumstance
Of dignity
[Verse 6]
I went to the wedding of Mary Lou
She said, “I don’t want nobody see me talking to you”
Said she could get killed if she told me what she knew
About dignity
[Verse 7]
I went down where the vultures feed
I would’ve gone deeper, but there wasn’t any need
Heard the tongues of angels and the tongues of men
Wasn’t any difference to me
[Verse 8]
Chilly wind sharp as a razor blade
House on fire, debts unpaid
Gonna stand at the window, going to ask the maid
Have you seen dignity?
[Verse 9]
Drinking man listens to the voice he hears
In a crowded room full of covered-up mirrors
Looking into the lost forgotten years
For dignity
[Verse 10]
Met Prince Phillip at the home of the blues
Said he’d give me information if his name wasn’t used
He wanted money up front, said he was abused
By dignity
[Verse 11]
Footprints running across the silver sand
Steps going down into tattoo land
I met the sons of darkness and the sons of light
In the border towns of despair
[Verse 12]
Got no place to fade, got no coat
I’m on the rolling river in a jerkin boat
Trying to read a note somebody wrote
About dignity
[Verse 13]
Sick man looking for the doctor’s cure
Looking at his hands for the lines that were
And into every masterpiece of literature
For dignity
[Verse 14]
Englishman stranded in the black-heart wind
Combing his hair back, his future looks thin
Bites the bullet and he looks within
For dignity
[Verse 15]
Someone showed me a picture and I just laughed
Dignity never been photographed
I went into the red, went into the black
Into the valley of dry bone dreams
[Verse 16]
So many roads, so much at stake
So many dead ends, I’m at the edge of the lake
Sometimes I wonder what it’s going to take
To find dignity

👌🌟🌸Masterpiece✨💫 Thank You Mr. Dylan 💞
Amazin how spontaneously he builds his songs with words
These lyrics put every so called poets/rappers to sleep
When life throws shit..i just listen to The godfather of music..bob Zimmerman n believe me it just explode me with positive vibes.man is legend of the music world
Dylan at his best!✌️
What you want from Dylan is exhuberance & charisma, and this song has tons of that. One of his best of the last 30 years. All those little bridges between the verses have great lyrics and impassioned singing. If Brendan O'Brien did all the organ & guitars, then thank you!
Isn't it fantastic ... when I played it for my husband .. there was a pause .. he said did he invent a new kind of syncopation here .. another pause .. I said, yeah.
"Dignity " is perfectly defined in a incredible song by one and only Bob Dylan. "Dignity never been photographed"

Old Bobbi Dylan didn't even have to try to be cool he had the best attitude out of the 60s and 70s
"i met the sons of darkness / and the sons of light / in the border towns of despair....". who the hell else could write something that good?!
Amazing
Makes me CRYYYYY!!!
Unbelievable song, Unbelievable song writer
Dignity, the appropriate response to a circumstance

Give him 2nd noble prize.he deserves it.respect this legend.
yes, yes yes. Agree 100 per cent.
My nan used to say earth is found at the bottom of the sea. We are down in the deep like fishes. Then god take up to heaven we can't understand because we only know the sea and we can't believe that we see. I thank she for explaining. Even one liked her. She clean as the church. She hardly ever talk about god. She faith was a simple grow in God and you will be strong.
HEAVEN HELP US ALL AMEN
Bowie said something like 'this song sums up our generation'. Great, great song.
Great from the first time you hear it. The rhythym, and the lyrics of course. Among his best, deserves more attention.
An amazing song makes you look inside yourself . Such a gifted bloke . Thanks Bob for so many many songs
Makes you look inside yourself? Which end do you look in?

Another Bob song 🎶… that just leaves me speechless…. A gift 🎁… thanks … Bob 👌☺️
"It takes a lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train To Cry" was always my favorite Dylan song. But I find that I listen to this one over and over and over and over again. I'd have to say it's my favorite now. How does he come up with such lyrics? Line after line after line. The Nobel people sure got it right.
Be warned Bob’s songs are addictive ✌🏻🤟🏻🤪
Yup. No doubt. Here too. For now.
Been my favorite for a long time

I dedicate this song to a very dignified man James Douglas Packer yours fondly Emma Charles, thankyou for the man you are,a national treasure.
"somebody said dignity was the first to leave" brilliant line. Always loved this version of this song.
It's something you give yourself
Bty Herschel HAS MY VOTE!!!
Great line that did not make the cut :
“ soul of a nation is under the knife, death is standing in the doorway of life, in the next room a man is fighting with his wife… over dignity”! Imaging with ALL of his songs how many verses were changed or cut! Must be thousands!! You can find this on CZcams. It’s a piano only demo and has just the 1st few verses. Working out the song. Cool to hear the man at work!!
I wouldn't call that great, but it's pretty typical of Dylan in his existentialist despair imagery. How can a soul be under the knife? The last part about a man fighting with his wife over dignity is much better as a final image. But the notion of dignity doesn't fit with many of the images and scenes in the song. I think he's using the word very loosely to try to describe other things we'd like to possess in order to feel there's a meaningful existence.
He puts so much felling into this song!!!!!!
James Packer is the personification of DIGNITY,yours fondly Emma
Mr Bob Dylan happens to God's most favorite songster/guitar playing/songwriting/ man about town/ storyteller of all times
Almost or perhaps you are right. I had to think of his ancestor the king. David.
from 5:13 till end.... great music
Now I turn my less corner. My nan was right for me. I loved her so much and she loved me
All its lacking is some bagpipes wailing at the tail end. Every time I listen to this - it's my permanent song so far this year on the cd player in my car ...
(listening to this just this second I realized I never hear the banjo on my cd player - I didn't even know it was there!!)
.... I can almost hear the crescendo.
When I first heard that song when it came out,it became right from the moment I heard it a favorite on my eternal playlist.Everytime I hear one of his songs,it is uplifting and this song is a good example why. When I came into his music when I was 14 years old,i was full of questions and so on.Being an Asberger Autist with Spectrum isn't akways easy, because people try to put you in sa box and say》Stay there. However I got a late diagnose many years ago and I that opened up my mind. Before I knew it felt totally isolated by the world, with one big expection》But listening to Bob Dylans Music, helped me more than I words can or could ever say.Brilliant Song✍🎸🎙🔝
Don’t let nobody tell u nothing, .......... keep your dignity😘😎✌🏻
A .timeless piece of music sheer brilliance

It's Dylan. Conplete and utter class. So interesting, great chords!
In these dark times it brings tears to my eyes every play
Fckn A what a fantastic song
Brilliant version!!!!!
I don't even have to try. I play Bob full volume - miss two, three exits then have to turn back and retrace 20 miles. When this happens in front of my children's friends they confidentially inquire, "dementia?" And my children reply, "Dylan"
Wow.bob is godly.spirits possess him.
Sure Pal, Sure!
Not ur fault. Bob makes me drink a few xtra shots of whiskey while i listen to the mesmerizing music
Wow! I've never heard this version I had a different one on a compilation cd, love this!!!!!!

Primeira vez que ouvi essa canção, foi numa rádio protestante, onde depois das 22h, tocava blues, e dignity.
This mindful, thoughtful and provocative lyrical masterpiece by Bob Dylan explores all the avenues of humanities struggle to secure a sense of dignity. The challenges of life place us all on the precarious edge of human existence where societies moral and ethical standards continually confront the demands of the individual’s needs.

From "DIGNITY" by Bob Dylan:
Got no place to fade, got no coat
I'm on the rollin' river in a jerkin' boat
Yes, I can understand why it was an outtake of the Oh, Mercy album.
Great song! Should’ve been on the album.
So glad this version is up now. Columbia used to be very touchy about uploads. Such a bloody good song.
It’s cuz he’s got a bootleg out and is touring im sure..
this is not Columbia upload. You know what, audio quality of record label's uploads really sucks. This is vevo upload which has better audio quality.
I am give not because I deserve. I was given a angle tough because I need one.
It's in act of all human kindness you don't photograph that. Little moments in our day to day when we do think about afters elves. Not number one. She in the phone call she makes. It the exter tip you leave for the man who opens that door for you. Its the beautiful woman who serve you coffee and give you a smile and she rushed off her feet. These kindness matters and we all try and make them matters the worthless people other say because they got rock and roll lifestyle.
Amazing still have heard my angle voice.
Oh boy what a massive deliverance is this masterpiece. And I do love the inclusion of the banjo.❤
The band Solas does a great version of this song.
Mejor versión, la guitarra!

Last corner sorry spelling mistake me. My dad said just do your best. Mum said tell people you have trouble with spelling. I through mum other are not as kind as you. I miss both of them still. There both gone but we live though heart ache and pain in this life but as dad said we rise above. He did talk about god. His faith was practical one be as kind as you can and don't take any quoter from man. At the time I was to young to understand. Now he words ring true for me. I turn that corner you want me to. I talk to my family not just on Christmas but when I get the chance. My froude has turn into a smile. My life turn into doing for me and others. I like helping all did I remember being happy that way
I love nature because she always springs up every where. I love to hear the birds that sing. Wow yes it's just great. A beautiful garden. His breath was all it took. How blessed are we. How fortunate we can all life on earth. I rather walk in the park than any fancy dress or place to go and eat. I take a brow kit with me. For a cup of tea. Sandwiches in the park for me. I love all the sessions of the land and sky. We are both blessed really with a life. We use it how we please. Your life was not given to others it's was given to you. Hope you understand my simple words man. Look now further than your travel park is there weeds he breath they into life. Not you. Not me. He thinks you're beautiful. He is pleased. It's please me to write to you. Tell you of all the good things he can do. Men are stubborn but I found jews are worst than stubborn. They take their god to a whole different level. I said I knew you
Not in person not in place. But I saw your grace. My view is not perfect but it get clear. My sence sharp I been practicing on my you understand. The first place is you then other then the world do not get it right away but I just a girl
