  • My 1979 BMW R100RT suffered a #1 connecting rod bearing failure. The motorcycle is 374,000 miles young. I thought this was the end of an era. Thanks to MAX BMW's devotion to keeping vintage airheads alive, I was able to benefit from their expertise and have the bottom end restored. I also owe thanks to the folks at Euro MotoElectrics for their huge inventory of vintage airhead parts. They were also a wealth of information in helping me plan my restoration. Other players include the folks at North Hollywood Speedometer and Bing carburetors. The bike is together again and running. It is 11 degrees and snowing right now, so it may be a few months before I start riding again.
The video is a rough biography of what I did to put the motorcycle back together again when the engine bottom end returned from MAX BMW, New Hampshire. Some of the details of the steps were not recorded, so look at the video as a rough outline.
The music in the video was composed and produced by Jordan Critz. The compilation is called Ambient Mix For Focus and Workflow. You will find Jordan Kritz's compositions on CZcams.

I guess I am now entering a NEW ERA with my bike. She turns 44 in May.
It should be a fun party.
    Ride SAFE.

Nice to see this bike running. A lot of memories with that machine for sure.
I'm chasing what appears to be a fueling problem or maybe some electrics that present as hard starting and this morning as not starting at all. New fangled machine requires a tablet and software app to fiddle.
I really enjoyed the ride up the pass part. That Colorado blue sky is always so amazing.

Hmmm......My simple starting and charging system is 8 or nine wires and one generator light. I always liked your newer, technological system for start up with all the lights and diodes and dings and whines and whirs, and light screens, etc. Kind of like firing up a starship readying for warp speed.....A little different than the old, flat twin vibrating technology I now get to put between my legs for a ride.....OHHH! Can I say that?

Sweet bike. Congrats on keeping it on the road. I have my dad's old 90/6 waiting for me to get it running. It's been sitting over 20 years. It kinda seems overwhelming.

Greetings Jeff, Thanks for the kind words! I look on line and see a lot of RTs that look showroom. That's nice, but mine has the patina of a bike that's been on the road, seen a lot of countries and never let me down. The engine never quit, She always got me home. Don't fret working on your Dad's bike. You will have a friend in it forever. The BMW is very simple to work on and you don't need a lot of special tools. You can almost tear down the bike with what you find under the seat in the tool box. And there are a ton of videos that will get you through almost everything. Hint: When you start the tear down, put the nuts and bolts in baggies with a note where they came from! Take pictures of the wiring. Post a picture of the bike. I'd love to see it. Thanks again for dropping by. I look forward to hearing about your experiences with the 90/6. Cheers, Rich. Be SAFE!

Hey MBL, Thanks for the visit. The bike has been back together and cruising around. Not as much as I like, but life is crazy! I got home from a ride and the odometer was 10 miles away from hitting 375,000 miles. I will keep posting videos of my projects and how I approach them. I subscribed to your site and you do a lot of creative and beautiful work. WOW!!!. Take care and ride safe. Cheers, Rich.

So glad to see you’re back on the road. Not sure where you are, but the scenery you get to ride through is awesome! Also, loved your engine shipping crate. Now that is the way to ship something!!

Greetings Earlie, Thanks for visiting and watching the resurrection video. It was really sad when the crank gave out, but I guess I got my mileage out of it. I thought it truly was the end of an era for me and the bike. But MAX BMW put the case back together again and after this reassembly I am hoping for a new era with the bike. It's hard to let old friends go, but it sure is nice when they come back. The Colorado Rockies are a nice playground to have in the backyard. And when you drop out of the canyons on the West side the desert West is just as amazing. The ending clip of the video is what I get to see when I run up to A-Basin ski area for a burger and a beer. A nice ride. Thanks again for your visit and kind words. The riding season is just weeks away here on the front range. Hope the same is true for you. Have a great spring and Ride SAFE! Cheers, Rich

You probably noticed the tach is not working. That is something I am looking at. Hopefully we can figure it out. Rich

Hi Rich, hope you doing well. Congratulations, great work. Did u find the reason, why the tach didn't work? I got exact the same bike out of 'March 79, not as much miles like yours, about 140'000 km, in original shape with scratches and so on. de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:BMW_R100RT,_79.jpg
And remember: Head up and rubbers down. wish u a safe ride

@@traebbeRTGreetings Traebber, I have a four part series on the trouble shooting I did on the original tach. Basically, the original Tachometer failed because of age and wear. I did find and purchase a used tach from England and it worked just fine as soon as I put it in. The old tach looked kind of grungy where the shaft went up through the dial, black build up and some cruddy looking hangings on. The wire insulation was also a little screwed up. I sent the tach to Palo Alto Speedometer Repairs (I recommend them highly) and the tech went through it completely. He tore it down to individual bits, cleaned and tested, replaced worn mechanical parts and tested the circuit board which was defective and replaced it. Total cost of repair was about $475. My original tach is now back and brand new and working perfectly. So, after 40 some odd years of use and 375,000 miles it just reached the end of its useful life. Palo worked miracles and brought it back to life. So that's the story of what happened to the tach on my RT. Thanks again for your interest. Cheers, Rich. Be SAFE out there!

Hello DDF, Thanks for the visit and kind words. It was an adventure tearing the bike down, getting the crankshaft and bearings restored and putting it all back together again. Trusty old steed for 375,000 miles. And spring is in the air, so time to start riding again. Have a great spring and summer. Keep the rubber side down. Cheers, Rich. Be SAFE out there!
