Having first assumed his wife Deborah was an American wannabe Kenyan, he was happy to discover that she was actually Scottish and willing to assimilate into the Kenyan culture. What he was not ready for was having to follow Scottish culture that required him to travel to Scotland to ask for permission to marry.
