The result of the civil war is that KMT forces were defeated and fled to the island of Taiwan, protected by the US navy for decades. This situation remains unchanged till today. Now, the ruling party of the island of Taiwan has been doing everything they can to try to deny the identity of the island of Taiwan being a part of China, a fact that has been so for centuries, and to declare independence. This is obviously illegal, and intolerable and unacceptable to mainland China, which is entitled to conquer the island of Taiwan with whatever means including military forces. If a war broke out across the Taiwan strait, it is essentially the on-going civil war. Nothing new.

I just love Taiwan Analyst, according to their news, the US would love to see an escalation in the region because 1. It's an election year 2. now it gives more reason to sanction or contain China. Russia would like to see an cross-strait escalation, because of the Ukraine war so it will drag this on further. The Taiwanese DPP would like to take a gamble (i.e. being provocative by ridding the ambiguous language), so if nothing happens in the coming four years (election cycle), it will show that they've made progress.
