  • The long dead 1010 John Deere is finally coaxed back into a running machine. Of course the video highlights the carburetor work and electrical testing in order to get it to the point of operation. So you will see a hand formed carburetor gasket being made and learn the basics for testing a set of points and a 12volt coil. To clarify, there is much much more to a coil than the basic test shown today, but at least with a five dollar volt-ohmmeter you will be able to determine if your coil is good enough to get fire for the plugs or not.
    This 1010 sat here for a good number of years and would probably have never deteriorated to the point it is at the beginning of this video if I'd have just kept a little gas in it and used it from time to time over the years. But that's the way it is...use it or lose it is the order of the universe. Well, that unwritten 'rule' is kind of a double edged sword. Use it too much and it wears itself out and still ends up needing a lot of work. That goes for anything mechanical though. As we dig deeper into this little tractor, you will find out more of its history. There is still one major problem bugging the little guy and that's the clutch. I have to take a bit of credit....actually ALL the credit....for most likely the improper installation of the clutch disc 10 or 12 years ago. I remember poring over the manual to determine the direction of the disc because it was longer than two days since removal....jus' sayin'. I know there is almost always only ONE way for it to assemble, but I think this time I inadvertently installed it in the reverse position. And you and I BOTH know what that means....Its gotta come apart to see for sure. So at that point you will get a full disclosure of the dastardly deed of a bad repair by Tractorman44 !! Of course I'm just assuming that's the issue. That remains yet to be seen.
    The fuel tank, unfortunately, is totally filled with encrusted rust flakes. The bad thing about this series of JD is the brilliance of the design engineers could not foresee the future development of the ethanol fuels and oxygenated fuels. The nasty fuels we get today seem to cause countless issues with old machines that are forced to sit for an extended period. So if you happen to be an oil/fuel company executive that contribute to the development of this nasty garbage you call 'modern fuels' I invite you to take a long walk off of a short pier. For the sake of all old tractor, old car and old truck enthusiasts...PLEASE, do it quick !! That my friend is all I have to say about that. Except I'd like to add that you have no friends here nor will you ever.
    Now that that bit of a rant is off my chest....we can go back to the brilliance of the JD engineers as it ties into the nasty gas issue causing major tank issues. Those guys...and I know you know who you are....created a nightmare for us guys that like old tractors. Which one of you or what team of engineers thought it prudent to design a steering system that sends the steering shaft right through the center of the gas tank...?!! I mean, c'mon couldn't you have just made it any worse...?? Oh of course you can, you can and DID !! On this little 1010 you designed it to where the steering shaft has to pass through the top of the radiator too !! But kudos to you for putting the power steering unit in the space between the gas tank and radiator. At least its easy to get to to check and top off fluids. Ok engineers, you are forgiven. No wait. I'm kidding...please join the fuel company engineer in their long walk off a short pier as well.
    You may think by the above rant that I don't like these tractors but that is far from the truth. I like all tractors but the best ones in my humble opinion are user friendly to work on....no matter the color. I also have a 50 JD as well as an older LA and have had a few A's as well, selling a '39 A just last year. I even housed a 330S for a friend a few years back. But he sold it to buy an engagement ring. Now the tractor AND his wife are BOTH gone. But I don't think the John Deere had anything to do with that...jus' sayin' (-; But I'm sure one time I heard her say he should have bought a RED tractor. Might be a connection after all......
    Thanks for hanging in there and reading everything this far.... #johndeere, #firststart, #willitrun

    Wendell we are lucky men.
    The mistakes we make may haunt us but haven't killed us yet.
    When you were discussing the problems and fixes to said problems during the video you mentioned using a MIG welder to resuscitate a broken governor spring.
    That reminded me of a story from the days before Sneelock was a real fix it and he did a few things that, well shall we say, weren't the most prudent.
    It will be up tomorrow because we all like to see our heros admit that although we seem to have God Like Powers, it is just as likely to be selective editing.
    Congratulations on getting the JD 1010 running.
    I learn something new every time I watch one of your videos.
    I just checked coils for continuity. Never bothered to read the resistance. I realize now that I could have been fooled by a shorted coil. Must be my luck held. If they passed current they worked.😁😎
    For the gas tank fix I was going to take my 8N tank to a shop up by Battle Creek that repaired fuel tanks to remove the rust. I spoke to the owner and he told me how they would cut out an access panel in the top of the tank and be able to work both sides of the baffle and clean it.
    The cost was right close to the cost of a new one so I decided to do the old method of filling the tank half full of water and a couple pounds of steel nuts. Then I strapped it over the front of my cement mixer and let it run.
    It came out okay. If it hadn't I was planning on cutting a hole in the top and seeing if I could fix it myself.
    Last year I saw Jon @ Farmcraft101 cut an hole in a bulldozer diesel tank and clean out the inside. He bolted a patch over the opening with a gasket. Might be something to try.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  Před 3 měsíci

      Well the old point systems were a bit forgiving but if you ever had a car, truck or tractor that seemed to eat points for fun...it might've been the resistance of the coil was too far out. That's why some require an external resistor on a 12 volt conversion if you want to keep a 12v coil in the circuit. Some guys put a toggle around the resistor to start it with the 12 v coil then switch the resistor back into the circuit immediately after she fires up.
      We too have done the 'hole' route on a couple gas tanks. It's a last resort though for me. I use electrolysis on the ones without a baffle as well as having done the nuts routine ties to a tractor rear wheel. It's ALL a pita though no matter what. LOL

    I put a clutch disk in backwards on a Chevy pickup many decades ago. We hang a magnet on a copper wire in a rusty gas tank. And pull that magnet out and clean it off on occasion. We often catch some very fine rust on that magnet. The best way to address fuel is to never leave a drop of gas in the tank or carb if its going to set very long. But you already know that.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Yeah, this sat for a good many years with about an inch of gas in it. Its pretty bad...actually really really bad. And they run the steering shaft through the center of the dang tank too. That makes it much more difficult. I do the magnet too then do the electrolysis thing with them. But this time, I might try the vinegar trick. I have three gallons to dump in there after I power wash it. I'm not sure the clutch is backwards, I'm just betting it is. Looking in the inspection hole, and the adjustment made for the most travel the throw out bearing bottoms out before the disc fully disengages.

Then in 1965, Ford came out with the 3 cylinder 2000, as well as the 3 cylinder 3000, 4000 and 5000 tractors. There were gas and diesel versions of all models, and all with 3 cylinder engines.
      From what I read was that the American diesel Ford tractors that came out in the late 50s was just a gas engine converted to diesel. In Europe, though, Ford was making 3 cylinder diesel engines that were designed from the ground up to be diesel engines. So when Ford redesigned their tractors in 1965, they used that same 3 cylinder diesel engine and converted it to gas. And they also put the diesel engine in those models to give customers the option of gas or diesel. That line was made from 1965 to 1974, and in 1975 the line got upgraded, i.e. the 2000 became the 2600, the 3000 became the 3600, etc.

    I really enjoy your videos and I learn a lot. I have a farmall h and it’s been sitting for about 5-6 years. I got it cranking but not started. Is there any way I can get in contact with you I have a few mechanical questions cause I really want to get it running.

      Well, I get a high quantity of emails daily so most times it takes me a while to answer them sometimes, but you can try at whpete44@gmail.com. In the meantime, I'd suggest at least glancing through the Farmall H playlist here: czcams.com/play/PLk72G9DTzZ1u4HTcEVKC3ehyV_UsFYaAG.html or some of the First Start playlist as well: czcams.com/play/PLk72G9DTzZ1uWqQ2hDCRVubPve9JlLzhw.html There's a ton of coverage about wiring issues, points, condensors and alternator conversions. Good luck, with the project and I'll try to keep an eye out for an e mail.

    🤣🤣🤣 That long walk off a short pier goes double for me!!! Some of the new vehicles are even worse. Trying to do just basic maintenance can be a nightmare. I know they make it difficult so you have to take it to a Dealer but it can be idiotic. The steering shaft through the radiator on my Farmalls is pretty dumb too. Taking the gastank off of my JD "B" can be a real chore with the steering shaft right in the way. I think sometimes it looks like one engineer designs part of it and another engineer needs to change the design to make something fit and they just do what is easiest at the time for them. 🤷‍♂🤷‍♂🤷‍♂ Having so many tractors and vehicles makes it difficult to always use or run each one to keep them operating properly. Making time between projects is usually real difficult. ☹☹☹

      @tractorman4461  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Yeah...I think it's crazy to route the steering shafts through the tanks and radiator. TheMuch Older Brothers 400 LP does the same thing. I feel your pain with the too many tractors and too many vehicles !! LOL Btw, I just picked up a radiator for the JD 50 this weekend. I'm planning on a winter repair for that thing. Along with a few little tid bits on the 1010...two of which are kinda major.

      Ohhhhh .....Jeff. I'm afraid I'm not gonna live that long. So I'm actually starting to move some down the highway. Mostly either in parts or pieces or maybe whole non-running tractors as parts tractors to start with. But then again I might sell all of 'em and buy ONE new one I won't have to work on. I'd like to sell 30 by New Years Day. But I doubt that will happen.

    Hello. Do you add any lead additive in with the gas? My dad was saying I should on my Oliver super 55 I am working on.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I only add lead to old engines that I totally rebuild. Some of them have valve seats that are no longer available and the lead softens the impact of closing. The same thing goes for the hardened surface on the existing cam shaft if its re-used with everything else being installed new. The hardened surface on the cam lobes have decades of wear already so may as well protect them from the new parts as well. Other than that situation, I just use a product called PRI-G for gas engines to maintain the new formulated fuels stability. I also am fond of using SeaFoam for long-term storage of gas powered equipment. But one thing about it, your dad isn't wrong....it sure isn't going to hurt anything to use it. The naysayers swear nothing is needed for anything, but personally I don't agree.

    I recently purchased a 2010 that was sitting for years. The right back wheel won't turn. Any advice on freeing a brake or could it be something else. Thank you.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  Před 7 měsíci

      More than likely its a stuck brake Alan. They have a tendency to rust up especially if the old machine sat outside for a considerable time. IF its something else, you may be in for a bad day. I haven't needed to get into these yet, but they can't be too difficult. As a matter of fact, they may actually be disc brakes. A lot of tractors were changing to those in the late 50's or so.

      Our original one is a Cabela's CG-15. I was looking up parts and found that they are made by Weston. So now the Cabela's is the backup and the Weston Pro-2100 is the one we use. All parts interchange, essentially the same machine. The vacuum pump failed in the Cabela's and they wanted $135 for the pump that'll sit on a half dollar and made of plastic. Probably thermoplastic, but still it failed. The Much Older Brothers CG-15 is at least 20 years older than mine and still working perfectly. Expect $350 or so for the Pro-2100.

      @@ricksmith-iw2op Foodsavers aren't much for doing whole hogs or beef. My Much Older Brothers has done literally dozens of beef and even more hogs in the years we've used it. Never a failure. I think mine failed because of a factory assembly problem. But once I buy the part, its literally a 20 minute fix. But ALL the parts are interchangeable.

      No, but I haven't looked yet. Eventhough this sat here for ten years or more, I just got it cleaned up and running a few months back. Some rats have eaten the spark plug wires, Just verifying distributor on the 1-3-4-2, 1 is upper right, then left is 3, down left 4, and down right is 2. Rotor is counter clockwise. Correct?

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  Před 7 měsíci

      Sorry I missed this comment and I'm sure you've got yours up and running by now. But yes the distributor turns CCW and the firing order is 1-3-4-2. The actual location of the wires on the cap really doesn't matter as long as the rotor is pointing to the wire that goes on #1 when you begin installing the wires...then go CCW with 3, 4 and 2. Some caps do have a #1 identifying a terminal so on those I try to always put that wire to #1 to avoid confusion, but you still have to be sure the rotor is pointing to that port on the cap. Damn rats !!
