- Hey Folks, in this video we pulled the engine out of a locomotive from 1938. The locomotive and engine are made in the Netherlands. The locomotive is an NS200 Sik. It was used for ranking the cars. The engine itself is a 3 cylinder diesel and was built and installed in the 60’s. The engine hasn’t run since 1995 and the starter is gone. We got the engine to start finally. What should we do with it?

Bring over the rest of the locomotive, and put it back in. 😊
But it would just sit there and do nothing :(
@@t1mmy13 they could build a small track for it XD
yeah
I was thinking the same
Can be used as a stationary generator... many locomotive have performed that job before!
milo speaking english is a dream come true. XD reading subtitles for years XD
True
I'm dutch and I agree, almost everyone in the Netherlands understands English but like 3 people outside of the Netherlands understand dutch, opens this channel up to a way bigger audience which is just smart
After watching with subtitles for so long, it's almost kind of weird hearing him say "Hey people, great that you're watching!" in English hehe!
@@Root656 he should keep that part in Dutch 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
@@Atok595this. It's very cool that he speak english now, but the opening should stay in dutch 👌
It is called a shunting locomotive. And you should restore the whole thing, as it deliveres some good content for an other public than restoring tanks and military vehicles.
good one, pull in a new audience
In the U.S. we call them Switchers.
They could install track around the shop and use it to pull tank chassis around when their engines aren't running.
Agreed
And drive it on the street!
Although its a common locomotive in the Netherlands it deserves a nice home at your shop! It would attract viewers from a different group off technical people. That would like to see it partiality of fully restored and that would boost your channel!
It could do some mini shuttle in his yard...
Please save the rest of the loco, you would be surprised on how many small heritage line would love that. Deisel Electric shunters are also very rare too, they normally have a hydrolic gear box or mechanical linkages. She a beast that deserves to be brought back.
This loc is the most common heritage loc in the Netherlands, far from rare. There are more then 50 in the Netherlands alone, half of which still working. They're also in much better condition lol :D
@@lekkerspellenspelen2903 Okay then, where I live the rail heritage side of things has been squashed and destroyed. We have lost so much heritage over the years and it cuts me up.
Get the loco back to the yard
I was happy to see the motor stay at low speed and stop when it did. The oil system did not seem to be producing as much lubricant flow as I expected to see. There should have been oil visibly weeping from the crankshaft bearings, and also the rocker arm pivots. It was all much too tidy. Maybe the oil pump gears are worn, maybe the oil pressure regulator was altered to allow the video to be taken. I’m happy the run stopped before anything got damaged.
Rebuilding the entire locomotive with working DC generator on the prime mover and 2 traction motors on the axles and the electrical switchgear for putting the traction motor windings in series and parallel can become expensive. The switching locomotives are not often misused and overloaded to burn up the electrics, but after many years left idle it would be very lucky if the rotating machines did not require re-winding and brushes commutators and slip rings should be maintained. Just replacing all the bearings would risk an expensive failure. Likewise just cleaning and adjusting the switchgear isn’t enough. The insulation needs to be tested at some voltage a safety factor greater then the operating voltage.
Be sure there is a market for the machine before investing too much money into an overhaul. If restrictions are being added to this class of machines there may be something that separates ordinary repairs that do not change the permitted uses of the engine and a more extensive overhaul or re-building that would impose restrictions on the exhaust gas particulates that the older motor that might not be able to meet without changing the combustion chamber design. These rebuild restrictions are intended to force the large locomotives that move the trains these little locomotives assemble to produce less of the very small soot particles. Most of the change is achieved by changes made to the fuel itself, some by changes to the injector nozzle spray, some by changes to the injector timing. If the shape of the combustion chamber requires changes the cylinder heads would have to be changed. If there are 50 of this type in service, most or all of them will have had the diesel motor replaced in the 1960’s like yours. The 1940’s metallurgy was not able to produce the hard long life rings, valves, valve seats, camshafts, and crankshaft bearings. The motors had short overhaul intervals that made the cost to switch the entire power plant to a new design attractive. If the other 50 in service are still using the 1960’s diesel motor and changes are required someone will be able to make the parts. If the old diesel cannot be used, look for a prime mover that can meet the new rules before you spend a lot of money to make a machine you will only be able to donate to a museum that can not be operated without special permission.
GREAT to have you give an English recap of this! I know all of your English speaking viewers appreciate the extra effort this takes!!! Keep up the AMAZING WORK! And Thanks again for this special video!
Definetly restore the whole shunter loco. It's dificult to make it go on the road or on tracks but not impossible for such crazy guys like you and your team. Nice work saving those old things and bringing em back to life!
It is quite common with diesel electric locomotives to use the main generator as a starter motor.
As a retired Locomotive maintainer I thought it curious that they didn't know this. I would also hazard a guss and say it's 24 volt. they could have hitched a truck battery to the generator starting fields and cranked it easily.
They seemed to be well enough informed to know how to remove the prime mover disconnecting all the electric cabling without making a mess. It seems a little odd that they wouldn’t have noticed starting connections. Maybe they couldn’t be sure what the purpose was, but maybe it’s not that simple. It is likely there would a mount for a starter on a multi-purpose diesel chosen to rebuild a small number of locomotives. It is possible that the general purpose starter was used for the rebuild and it was scavenged and the original starter winding on the main generator was deleted when it was rewound for the rebuild. It’s also possible that the starter was the main generator but not in working condition. The little locomotive would not have been abandoned with attached rolling stock if it had been operable. A working machine would have been dragged out and used or sold off. It is only bad-order equipment that gets abandoned in a dead-line on a disused siding in case the maintenance department wants to scavenge parts or use the hulk to receive the running gear from a frame damaged in a derailment or wreck. Since it appears that the prime mover was working, either the main generator, switchgear, or traction motors were inoperable. Of those, the main generator would be the one that was too costly to remove and repair to resell it profitably and be stored as low value parts.
Yes bring the loco back and rebuild it 👍
what the propose of these videos destroy garbage??
1:43 "It coughs out a complete bird's-nest!"
2:26 they found where the oil-pressure-meter should be connected. But since it isn't, the open line sprays oil against the flywheel, slinging it all over the place and everybody...😂
Thank you for English.
Dont let her die, restore the loco
Restoring a whole loco can be a great video! :D
I'd say, get the locomotive and fix it. BUT, instead of building some rails at the workshop maybe it should be modified to drive on tracks? Should be an interesting project.
What if he makes it to drive on the road?
@@fgcfdfjAndFemalePSF404Rulez In the Netherlands? No way to get it street legal. But if he'd get it to drive on tracks (like an armored car, not as in train tracks) he could drive it (kind of) freely around the workshop.
@@fgcfdfjAndFemalePSF404Rulez theres no steering in a train right? hence why they drive on rails?
@@destructionnl8165 what if he puts the engine in another vehicle?
@@GameCoreVidzit has 2 electric motors.
With a bit of modification, that's 1 for the left side and 1 for the right side.
I think...
'Can we fix it?'....Mister Milo becomes Bob the Builder. Time to build a railway track for Thomas the Tank Engine.
Bring over the rest of the locomotive
Great video it's always amazing to see an old rusty piece of engineering come back to life
If you could work with somebody who wants to run a little railway to build a loop of track where the locomotive currently is, then you should definitely repair the locomotive so you (or a group of rail enthusiasts) can run it around on special occasions.
Alternatively, with the right electrical switching equipment, the engine & generator would make an awesome backup generator for your workshop...
It's amazing how you speak English, really love to see that!
Rebuild the loco. Then put it in your shop, elevate clear of the ground. Have a bar in front. Then you have a working indoor loco with a nice sound, great to look at too. English re-cap was excellent.
Restore the whole locomotive including factorycolors en get it back on the railnetwork!
Restore the locomotive!!!
Pull starting an engine with a forklift was ingenious. I often come up with some unconventional problem solving but I'm not sure I would have thought of that.
as a dutch railway intusiant i would love to see this NS 200 (''the NS SIK'') seeing to get fully restored.
Most of them are still in a good state, i am a volunteer at the SSN and we have one that is constantly being used.
Put the engine back in the loco. The chassis can then easily be used as a table for holding beers so this really satisfies both options.
We are currently restoring a 2ft 3inch ( 68.5 cm.) gauge railway in N Wales, and are looking for our first loco. Also many other heritage railways are in the same position.
I love how it's cooled by diesel, so the diesel comes from the fuel tank around the cooling system through the filter then into the combustion chamber?
Get the whole locomotive! Not many people on youtube are doing trains so you'll have something pretty unique to share here as well as something cool to enjoy yourself
I want to see you rebuild the entire locomotive! Back to it's original glory!👍
Fix it as power back up generator for the house ! Build nice sound proof shed for it and that would be cool.
Get the locomotive going!
Definitely bring home the rest of the locomotive 👍🏻👍🏻
it was really nice when it finally got its stride and settled to the traditional loco idle/sound. "ahhh THERE it is!"
You have to put this back in the Locomotive and restore it! It deserves nothing less.
Awesome job and you have to bring the rest of the locomotive home
You can't kill an old mechanical diesel engine. Love the starting procedure! Restore the whole loco and have your own railway.
Wow your English has gotten a lot better since the last time I tuned in, well done.
Eigenlijk leuk om de motor weer in de locomotief te zetten en de locomotief te (laten) restaureren :)
Always a pleasure to see you back!
Get the entire locomotive running!
Definitely restore it all including that cool box car! That engine needs its train back now that it runs again! Great Job! Too bad the original engine wasn’t in it, would’ve liked to have seen that too.
If you can swing it, id like to see a full restoration of the whole loco, the relics of history deserve a life.
MILO is the man #1
A Master like Milo have to repair the whole locomotive! but where to drive? are there any tracks left on tech beach to ride? or built some new tracks naar de werkplaats? (Maybe its possible to power the werkplaats with the generator too)
greetings from germany
Yeah! Locomotive restauration!!!!!
Very nice restart! She sounds great!
Restore the locomotive! But if you wantbto something weird and unexpected, convert the locomotive chassis to run axles and tyres for road use. Could be fun trying to set up steering.
Great starting, work and ''music', Good to hear your enthusiasm, get the rest of the loco and restore it, it could be lost too easily.
That locomotive has Chrome paint. You cannot sand or use the airhamer on it. Dont take it lightly look at what happend at Tilburg.
@@mmm365jobless people were sent there to work sanding old trains without proper protection. If they didn't go to work there they would cut their benefits
Most got pretty bad chronic health problems from that. It ended with a big lawsuit. The chrome-6 used on the train is the same stuff that caused problems in the film "Erin Brockovic" that's based on a real story.
THAT WAS AWESOME!!!!! 😳
Put it back in the locomotive and restore the old girl to her former glory!!!🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍👍
I look over seeing the lift truck as a starter. It was ingenious. Loved the music! Your tank/crane was creative modern use of a military weapon
A pull-start loco prime mover! I love it!! Keep up the great work!
FANTASTIC! BEAUTIFUL
GREAT job🎉
Zo herkenbaar de stork klop ,,heb met verschillende stork motoren gewerkt geweldige Nederlandse motor,
Could be a great backup generator too
Depends on what Voltage that Generator delivers.
Yeah, that was my first as well. See if the generator can be brought to running condition, see what kind of power it can produce. Grow rapeseed, run the diesel engine on that, connect the generator to the grid, sell the electricity - profit!
@@rauschi3863that’s why inverters exist…
@@rauschi3863 the original generator on that thing must be gone beyond the point of repair by this time, destroyed insulation, but they could take the engine and still hook it up to a modern generator with control electronics
@@Rosenrot_raccoon Yeah thats a good idea replace it with a modern one.
Not practical at your shop, but I love hearing it run! Set the locomotive on 6 meters of track and make it run able.
Then sell it (if you can procure it).
Big engine cold start & awesome sound
engine sounds lovely
That is TOO cool!! Love it!!
Excellent job thanks for the show!!!!! enjoyed totally 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Dear Emile (alias Milo),
The sound of this 3 cylinder 4 stroke dieselenige is absolutely beautiful thanks to the long stroke of the engine. At the time they were indestructible engines that were produced by Stork Diesel under the name Stork R153, 4 stroke 3 cyl. That the engine was and is reliable is what you’ve proved by starting the engine by any repair but with some love only.
I look forward to your next vlog
Super good engine! Wouuld be great as a boat engine! But first can use a cleanup and a electric starter.
That is a nice little Sik locomotive.. I don't think that they are particularly rare but you should definitely restore it. These are generally driven from outside so look like great fun.
I'd definetly restore the whole locomotive...😊
Brilliant video guys. Yes guys, you’ve got to restore the locomotive. 😎😉👍
Thanks for the English 🙏🙏🙏🏴🏴
Ik hou van treinen en je moet absoluut die locomotief gaan halen!! Wat een top idee 😊
Thats amazing. Well done. Now get my transit van started.
Milo you are an absolute legend for me
Mooi man!
Get it ALL! Loco and carriages would all be treasured by historical restoration folks. Entire working early Diesel-Electric Shunter loco especially: that one is a rarity.
It sounds good to see the locomotive to be restored
These locos were diesel-electric and were built in abundance from the mid thirties. There are quite a few still around on heritage lines. Officially classed as "shunting-aids", they could be driven by people without a full license and controlled from the running boards on each side. Virtually every station had one or more often used to shunt cars around the station, neighbouring branch lines and private sidings.
So cool!
Love the pull start
I don't know about rescuing the rest of the train engine, but that thing would make one hell of a backup generator for the shop. It should be able to power everything you have in there.
@mastermilo82 great video and I applaud you and your english skills!
You could probably donate the shunting locomotive to a local tourist railway so it could run
Thank you again for the English version 👍
Well done team.
tnx for the video
It is like I can suddenly understand Dutch :D
dus de locomotief loopt niet op steenkool, in contrast tot Emile z'n engels
Well done, Milo! Love it the rest of the world is shy of speaking other languages while we Dutchies don't give a crap and do our best and give it a go! English content: present!
Good work.

Mooi gedaan hoor complimenten 👍🏻😎
I love the NS railways, such unique locos!!
Stork werkspoor ricardo prachtige motor ❤, zo’n uniek geluid. Restaureer de hele locomotief.
That is quite a fuel knock at startup. Makes me think of the old Mack engines, when they accelerated they sounded like they had a bunch of marbles in the cylinders.
Hey milo, love the video!, is there any more of the useless experiment videos planned?- greetings from England 🇬🇧
Yes! Good you mention this. We want to record a new experiment next week. We have a Ford Fiesta with CVT, so we’re open for good suggestions.

Amazing!! Motor!!!😊
Hey Master Milo, thank you for speaking in english, I very much enjoyed understanding what you where saying.
sounds insane
if anything I have learned over the years. if it has oil and the interior is kept from the elements. it will still run despite how much of a rusted hunk it appears to be. it may not move anything anymore. but it will operate at a fraction of its old potential
