Life is Beautiful: Finding Beauty in the Holocaust

- In Life is Beautiful, Roberto Benigni found love, comedy and beauty in the tragedy of the Holocaust. The Oscar-winning classic is a masterpiece in screenwriting, acting, direction and cinematography/photography. In this review/video essay I break down how Benigni shows us that the most beautiful thing about life is you. So stay true to yourself. Because if you can learn to love others with the same confidence with which you love yourself, then you can find the beauty in just about anything.
Note that the philosophical ideas of Schopenhauer that I touch on in this video are only the very basics and do not completely represent the man, his works or his ideas. I encourage you to do your own research and create your own opinions.
NB: I highly recommend you watch the full movie Life is Beautiful before watching this review/video essay! You won't want the movie ending spoiled for you in this video.
I would love to discuss in the comments! Or feel free to reach me on my social media:

“The tragedy of the Holocaust is not something to laugh at, but it’s definitely something you can laugh against” - this is incredibly true and such a powerful way of opposing to cruelty
I laugh at
@@punishedgloyperstormtroope8098 I also laugh at America for losing every war since ww2
@@Your_Wingman lollll
@@punishedgloyperstormtroope8098 ik right America can't win anything 😂
@@Your_Wingman yeah America sucks it’s the least deserving country to be global superpower
Thankfully soon America will fall and be separated and balkanised into small countries and a new European superpower can emerge that’s actually competent
My favorite part of the whole movie is when he's translating the German "rules for the game," for his son, and doing his best to make everything he say match the officers body language. It wasn't til I got older that I realized noone in the bunk blew his cover either, he could have easily been stopped and shot, but they let him do it for the boy. ❤️
Here's the clip of the scene ❤️ czcams.com/video/9lTSqc1UnLU/video.html
you clearly have vision and talent, and the youtube algorithm has worked in your favor! there are very few youtubers who come running out the gate with the quality and consistency of the videos you've put out this past month. you should be super, super proud of yourself.
This is one of those movies that you wanna watch again because its just lovely and light hearted but you cant because its dark and heavy at heart.
Im so sorry he died..but when I think about it, it really shows his tremendous strength
Well, this breakdown + the Marriage Story video that introduced me to you = a new fan of your stuff (and a new subscriber). I love these deep dives into great film!
Thank you!
Wait til you see Call Me By Your Name......
Same! I came from the same marriage story video and subscribed. You’re awesome!
ehchess just watched Shiny Reviews The Marriage Story and then this one. In-depth in a way that adds to the picture, when I was little would want to see the same movie over and over again each time would gain something new this is a more adult way of gaining more.
You got me to cry still now from just watching this critique of Life is beautiful. Phenomenal film analysing 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
"But it's definitely something you can laugh against" you really have a way with words wow
Your channel is great I just watched all your videos at once lol good job!!
Me too, all in last couple hours I'm emotionally drained in a good way!
I think this is my favorite movie. I went into watching it 100% not knowing what it was about. I thought it was just one of those older happy fun movies about a family just loving life... and then slowly it changed and almost shows just how gradually the change happened in small stages until it was too late. I love the aspect of him trying his best to keep his child's innocence even though it was the worst of times. A child should never ever have to deal with adult issues let alone the holocaust. It really changed my parenting style. It was one of the best movies I've ever seen.
From the music to everything you just said, La vitta è bella is one of the most beautiful movies out there and my personal favourite. I can never forget at the end, the irony, the drama where the child finds the “trunk reward”, such a witty part of the movie but also so so sad. I cry every time. Have not watched this in a while, thank you for posting this.
When I read your comment and you referenced the "trunk reward", I broke down and cried. Life is beautiful is my favorite film about the triumph of the human
@@feliciahorne8969 🥺🥺yeah!
This is a movie that both my parents love and I was blown away when I first watched it. I don't know how important it is to mention but I am German, and I have never seen a movie on concentration camps or the holocaust like this. It's beautiful, funny and sad at the same time. Thank you for this video.
We watched it tonight, and one thing I realized on this watch-through was how good/subtle a job it did of showing the effect of the Holocaust on the perpetrators as well as the victims. You see and hear of the female guards’ desensitization, the doctor’s descent into madness and guilt/horror, and the early indoctrination of the children.
If you’ve never read the story of Corrie ten Boom, “The Hiding Place,” I highly recommend it. One of the things I love best about it (and there are very many) is her sister’s vision, conceived even while in the concentration camp as a victim, of the place of healing she would create for the German people, because she recognized that they would need to heal, too. It’s a vision that was realized. Their story is very beautiful, as well; in fact, I would say it’s even more transcendent than this one, even as great as this one is, perhaps because it’s a true story.
I just want to say that currently, I am waiting for the fleeting moments of self-doubt and jealousy to pass, and for the violent onslaught of motivation to arrive. As an aspiring "media-analysis-person" watching these four videos you posted so far - they are a huge inspiration. They are not only incredibly well made, but they also have beautiful messages. I am speechless. You clearly came here with a goal, and I am truly glad it's coming true for you. Congratulations, and just keep em coming, I guess. :)
I for some weird reason watched this video. I have zero interest in movies, but the author seems incredibly smart. An analyst, observer, thinker with a multilevel foundation strong enough to explain a simple theory through philosophy, books
I want to watch the video but I haven't watch the movie so I will be watching this later when I do. But I still want to comment because 1) it helps with engagement and I'd love for others to find your channel like I did 2) as someone who loves watching video essays, I'm really glad I found your channel because yours are some of the best I've ever watched!
That's a dedicated subscriber - thank you! And I would definitely give this one a watch, it's one of my favourite films of all time.
When the kid comes off the tank and you hear the adult voice saying so that was my story my father gaved his life to protect mine.I burst into tears everytime
This is one of the best films ever made. Every time I watch it I'm moved and amazed.
I am Italian and grew up with Roberto Benigni movies and I watched this movie countless time. I can say that your review made me observe aspects that never thought about before. Very well written video. Subscribed.

They're so many things that i overlooked or didnt think much of until you pointed it out!! I really enjoyed your video!!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed
Waking up and finding out one of my favourite creators on youtube made a video about one of my favourite movies must be one of the best feelings ever.
I cried for days after the movie. Life is beautiful really broke me even though it "seemed" to have a bright surface of resilience, love and bravery. But the dark parts were so horrible that I couldn't endure it.

*YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY REVIEW/ANALYSE ‘IM THINKING OF ENDING THINGS’*
It’s pretty insane and had to watch it twice to fully understand what was happening but it sure it interesting and would love to hear your take on it :)
I remember watching this movie as a child and it was so profound. It's amazing that he was able to inspire so many with this beautiful movie. I love hearing your dissection of these movies. It gives me a richer appreciation for this art, and even for my own work. Subscribed! Thank you!

When you continue to deliver what they did not expect they stop labelling predicting expecting and rather follow you every word this is why I love your videos. Because at first I thought I knew what you were talking about in the marriage story and you surprised me and you continue to surprise me and you change the way I listen

Another great review. I look forward to every one of your posts. It has been a long time since I have watched Life is Beautiful, but when you talked about the setup and pay-off of the shower scenes, I wept. I cannot wait to see what you will cover with the next video. Thank you again for all that you do.
Whatever movie is discussed in your videos, it is on my list of next film to watch. This is so I can watch your video on it afterwards.

Want more videos from you … loved it great work very clear and soothing…
after watching every video on your channel I realise how little I appreciated films in general and will start seeing movies outside of my normal net... I really enjoyed Green Book and wonder if I'm missing out on anything that might have flown over my head? maybe green book is worthy of doing a video essay on. love the videos and keep up the amazing work!
Best analysis of this movie I have seen so far ❤
I love these, already cant wait for more!!!
thanks for recommending the 2 channels in the end
Never before have I been stoked to get on someone's Patreon.
Excellent analysis of an amazing movie. Thank you.
Been subscribed ever since your first video and every time you amaze me with the quality of every aspect of your content. Please keep going, you make me watch (and re-watch) everything you review and only good has came out. I really hope the algorithm works on your favor and you blow up, because videos like this is what people should be watching.
I’d also like to include two little recommendations! Movies “Dear Ex” and “Breadwinner” on Netflix. Maybe it’s because I’m very emotional, but both brought me to tears, and I find them very interesting. Would be nice hearing your opinion on them!
Again, what a good video! Please keep sharing your knowledge with us 🤓

Very glad to see this video. I feel like there has been a backlash against "Life is Beautiful" in recent years, which I think is unfortunate. It's a great movie.
Beautiful analysis!
I can't wait for more videos. Just subscribed
This is beautiful 💙🙌🏽💜
wow i really enjoy your channel!!!
i havent seen the film but the way you frame and discuss things is so clear and engaging - a beauty in itself. great video☆

Beautiful man thank you- got a new fan here
You have such a calming voice
Hi from NY! I really love your critical thinking and analysis of this movie. It's really impressive the way you express it. My recommendation for you for your next movies are Jojo Rabbit, Colonia (Emma Watson), and any Tim Burton's work like Scissorhands I love all of his movies since they're abstract. I'd really appreciate that if you take one of these :)
god i love they way you write things really fascinating insights i wouldn’t have thought of you should look at black swan!! recently watched it and your perspective would be so cool!
Beautiful! Loving your essays 🤍, this movie was heartbreaking had to watch it for history class, just wanted to ask do you major in film at university?
(side note: i watched young royals because you were so passionate about it, loved it!)

That was so beautiful I'm crying so much
i think this might be my favourite youtube video of all time
i really would love to see some paint or digital time-lapses of your paintings!
also just found this channel, definitely some good stuff
Love your video essay very much and how you deeply explain every ideology on a particular scene. I really want to see and hear you make a vid about Parasite (directed by Bong Joon Ho) and I would watch it no matter how long it is.
This is one of the most important movies I've seen. I can't wait to show it to my children.
when i first saw this film, my parents were going through a divorce. my dad took me to see this film with his new gf. he used this romantic movie as a strategic choice to get close to this young impressionable college student. note that he was 40 and he was accomplished in his career. He never had a taste for romantic films. His new marriage didn't last.
the 2nd time i saw this film was the day after, i decided to bring my mother to see the film. she cried after seeing this, and on our way home i could see that she wished for a man to treat her well like guido did in the film. eventually, she did find her prince
now as an adult, I decided to rewatch it for the 3rd time. i find myself feeling melancholic experiencing what my mom did and looking at what happened back then.
I found your channel by you marriage story video! New subscriber! I love analyses of movies and your videos are top-quality so far! Would love for you to cover the movie Malena!
What a beautiful movie and what a beautiful message!! Heart warming 💖. Thanks for analysing this movie...you did a great job ! Vivek Agnihotri ( Director of the Kashmir files) please take notes... this is how it's done!!
I really liked this!
Amazing!!
Great content...!!!!
