- This was a very special night of theater! I got to attend the tale of Sweeny Todd's revival on their second preview performance. On my New York trip, this was the hottest ticket in town. There was so much excitement in the theater and this show has some big names attached to it including Josh Groban, Annaleigh Ashford, Jordan Fisher and Gaten Matarazzo. So, join me for an epic night of theater as we check of this new production of Sweeny Todd!
Amazing show- didn’t know what to expect, walked out obsessed. I saw it on the third preview
Love that they have done a huge production of this again! Thanks for the video!👍
Saw Previews 1 and 2, the atmosphere is electric, like being at a rock concert. Sat Front Mezz Row A Dead Center, I seriously doubt there's a better seat in the house! The 26 piece orchestra under the direction of Alex Lacamoire is amazing, Annaleigh Ashford almost stole the show as Mrs Lovett, her comedic chops are on full display, and for everyone who said Josh Groban was a lightweight who couldn't pull off Sweeney Todd, here comes another TONY nomination for Best Actor in A Musical, and he's getting more comfortable with each show. #AttendTheTale, you won't be sorry!

Thanks for posting your great review. It was very detailed. Showing the auditorium was a very nice touch. Loved it! ❤
Cannot wait to see this next month!
I just saw it last night. What a waste of time and money
Excited
Can't believe Ashford wasn't mentioned. She absolutely stole the show IMO. Better than Lansbury or Lupone, and if you disagree-- you just haven't seen Ashford yet or you're simply old and tired. Period.
I saw her a week ago!
I saw the 3rd preview. Annaleigh Ashford as Mrs. Lovett makes this show. I'm shocked, this review forgot her. I felt Josh Groban was still trying to find his inner-demon and Gaten's stage voice was still a work in progress.
She is BRILLIANT
Jeff! Please study your facts before posting. The theatre is not the “La Fontaine” but is the Lunt-Fontanne. It is named after the married couple Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, who were considered America’s First Couple on Broadway. They hit their heyday in the 30s with comedies by Noel Coward, G.B. Shaw, etc. They were considered the ultimate in suave, chic couples.
Thanks for the correction.
Where were you seated? And could you experience the play well ?
We were at the top of the balcony. It was very hard to hear the dialogue and to see the actors expressions. If you can, put down the $$$ for the close seats.
What about Mrs. Lovett???
I saw the show last night and everyone was amazing!! Mrs. Lovett was incredible and held her own with the incredible Josh Groban, she stole the show at times. The audience was so excited that it was electrifying! It was wow, wow, wow! I agree with you, Tonys all around!
I have a question I heard that the whistle sound is used less in this production is this true? If so that would be interesting. I can’t stand that sound.
You are correct. It wasn't used.
I was so over the moon with Josh Groban, I forgot to mention her. I was setting so far away that I couldn't hear her speak. This was true for most of the cast. I didn't want to mention it since the was a preview performance and they are still working on the show. I don't believe this was a performer issue, but a technical problem I'm hoping they fix.
I haven’t seen the show yet, but I think Annaleigh Ashford has a strong chance of grabbing a Tony Award too. She does character parts very well. She was terrific in “Kinky Boots” and won a Tony for “You Can’t Take it With You.” Sweeney Todd is the best American musical theater has to offer. I hope it runs on Broadway forever until the replacement leads are Will Ferrel and Amy Schumer. 😉
What was the barber chair like? :D
It was what I wanted it to be. My favorite part of the chair, was the sounds it made as Sweeny's victims fell.
I saw it last night. I didn't like it at all. None of the songs were memorable. The only reason why I knew that jokes were being told was because people were laughing. Most of the show made no sense. There wasn't a single character to root for. Half the time I kept asking myself, why was I watching this? Oh yeah. Because the tickets were expensive.
On the bright side the actors were good. They did the best they could with the bad writing and bland music. So, just know that once the musical is finished, you will be out a lot of money plus you will never get that time of your life back.
I give it 1 1/2 out of 5 stars.
“Sweeney Todd” is actually considered one of the greatest and most influential musicals ever written. Without it, there would be no “Les Miserables” or “Phantom of the Opera”. Of course, there were no characters to root for. It is a story about horrible people doing horrible things.
@ChienaAvtzon that makes no sense. Les Mis was written over 100 years ago. But I guess you are right. It almost influenced me to walk out of the theater but I stayed because my fiancee is a huge fan of Josh Groban.
Seriously, what you wrote is a really bad argument. How is this show good based on what it is? There is no good music, the dialog is trash, the story is boring, and I didn't care about one single character. So, where is the good part that I am supposed to love?
@@rangers94ism - The original version of “Sweeney Todd” was also written over a century ago. Plus, the musical is a decade older than “Les Miserables”. The score is one of the most complex ever composed, and the lyrics are incredibly witty.
@@ChienaAvtzonSo I guess we are throwing that word "witty" around like a rag doll.
I don't get your argument. Are you saying that because other people like something I now have to like it? That's a really bad argument. How is this show better than trash? The music isn't good, even the killing was boring. So, what's there to like?
@@rangers94ism You haven't given one single reason as to why you didn't like anything. Other than it's "Bad writing and Boring music.". Give me a reason as to why it was boring. You're probably the only person I've ever seen who doesn't like this show. The music is complex, brilliant, haunting, and beautiful. Same with the story. Without a doubt one of the best musicals ever written. If you were looking for a fun night at the theater but came to see this show I get why you'd be disappointed, but to call it a poorly written show is beyond insane.
