The Book Thief is an amazing story and one of my favorites. It appears that you haven’t come to the sad parts yet so be sure you have a box of tissues. I may or may not have ugly cried. I’m also trying to train my DNF muscles and I’m proud of myself for DNFing 1 book this year 😂

I will always support an absurd amount of current reads hehe

I am a Taylor Jenkins Reid fan, so I am looking forward to reading Did You Hear About Kitty Karr? I love that you are focusing on debut authors, as I am often times blown away by the quality of their books.

Debut authors consistently blow me away! I like to pick up and read the new debut releases throughout each year. 💛

Dune is an absolute banger and a classic, you gotta push through those first 60-90 pages (which are notorious for their slowness) and then you're set! Nice video

      Thanks for the compliment!
      I read like 60% of Dune & I was still struggling :/
I'll never say never about possibly picking it up again but idk if that series is for me haha

@@scottieshereereads Well I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you'll not like the rest of the book, and unless you're into trippy hallucinogenic worm gods then you'll also probably not like the rest of the series. Hey, maybe it's like broccoli and you'll enjoy it later in life, who knows?!

Dang, let me tell you right now. R.F.Kuang--- every book/series is it's own vibe. In fact you can easily say that each book/series feels like they were written by a different author because it's that different in a good way. Imagine being that awesome being able to give a different flavor every single time you read a new book. Babel is not anything like the Poppy Wars. It keeps that mellow feel and I think it's that way because she is trying to capture that academic/sterile feeling. I think it's been polarizing. You'll either love it or hate it. I think I loved it mostly because I felt like my thoughts were laid out in all the pages. It was deeply personal to know the devastation behind the erasure and colonization of a language and how oblivious others are to it. With that said, it is deeply academic. If you end up not liking it or DNF, I completely understand why.

    • @scottieshereereads
      @scottieshereereads  Před měsícem

Those are great points! Thanks for that input! 💛
I haven't read many "dark academia" books yet & I've been told it's a bit similar to that genre. I really think that I will enjoy it which is why I haven't completely DNF'd it yet. However, I think I'll save it until I have read a few more faster paced fantasy series since I haven't read many fantasy books at all this month & that's what I am feeling at the moment.
I'll get back to Babel eventually!!

'Empire of Pain' is a phenomenal read. Really opens your eyes to how deep and broad the opioid industry influences everything. I can't recommend it enough.

Hey Scottie, you have some absolute great books in this list. I have added Ijeoma Oluo as well as black AF history. There are so many books we must read...so little time! As for spare, OMG, I am in a book club and that is the book that was chosen! arrrrrrrrrgh! I actually never planned to pick it up, but unfortunately, I am obliged to read it now.😒

I will say that the audiobook was well done so maybe listen to that instead of physically reading that HUGE book!
If you're interested in the royal family at all, I am sure you will find it interesting.
I should have known it wasn't for me from the beginning because I just really don't care about the royals. hahaha
I'm hoping you enjoy it though!!

Babel is either a hit or miss with everyone. The Poppy war and Babel have two different vibes so definitely keep that in mind. But either way I can’t wait to hear your thoughts once you dnfed it or finished it. ❤

I really think that I will enjoy Babel. It just was too slow for me at that moment in time. haha
I'll keep you posted when I pick it back up!
I'm curious....which is your favorite RF Kuang? I know you're read a few!

My pile isn't that big. I usually have about 3-4 books on the go. I can't seem to get into A Little Life, but I should give it a try after hearing everyone's thoughts.
I loved Babel, but it's definitely not the typical fantasy book that you can just inhale. Like you said, it's one to take your time with. I should try Nevermoor. I always hear good things about it. I'll have to check out Mediocre.

I can buddy read Evermore and The Book Thief if you want. I have them on the imaginary TBR. I, too, stopped reading A Hundred Years' War on Palestine. I grew up knowing the history of Palestine and the issues within the region. My reading Palestinian books are more so for support and to keep on learning but at the time everything was sooo much. It continues to be so much and I plan on picking it up again next month.

I've picked up A Hundred Years' War On Palestine again & just slowlyyyy working my way through it.
I would love to buddy read either of those with you!!
My August TBR is pretty stacked with the Full Moon Readathon & another personal project.
Let's plan for the beginning September?!

You def have a big pile bur totally doable. I can't say I have read or plan to read most of the books you mentioned. Dune and Percy Jackson included. Don't feel bad about a DNF. Get comfy with it. Children of Blood and Bone is your template

You're right...I need to always remember Children of Blood and Bone & how great of a decision that was.
