    I just came out of The Cure’s live perfomance, came here cause I wanted to listen to Fire in Cairo that it was not played. I am stunned that at 63 Robert Smith has the voice sounding better than when he was in is 20s and of course it was already one of greatest voices of all music history, besides being a master o rhythm guitar. The band performance was perfect, I had never truly noticed the richness of the drums. A very melancholic show full of long progressive and wide range tunes that ended with greatest hits. Almost 3 hours of pure euphoria and curation to the soul. I am so happy I watch this show I feel replenished and fortunate for being present at such a great act of these living legends.

      He's a lot like Prince isn't he. They both are inspired by Jimi Hendrix. And then they took their personal heart and playing abilities with that and just went crazy for us. I wish Jimmy had lived a long happy life too. Some great artists just can't settle into a good life and mental well being also.

      Actually, there are other live recordings from this era that are MUCH better. This was the golden age of analog recording technology, which had basically been perfected in the mid 70's and was still the standard in '80. As long as gigs were being recorded through a decent multi-track mixing console on to 1/4 inch reel to reel, and not on someone's crappy little cassette-recorder boombox (as so many bootlegs from this era were), they sounded great. Check out the Cure's live at Tubmingen '81 for a perfect example.

    Thank You for the great quality of this video. I thought every iteration and re-invention The Cure went through were terrific. I never thought them boring because they're so willing to stretch themselves and not allow anyone to pigeon-hole them. I thought The Cure and Joy Division were both supposed to debut @CBGBs in the E. Village. the trouble is the acoustics in this place sound better than CBGBs would have which means this could either be Max's in Midtown?? OR else its at the Bowery Ballroom on Delancey and Bowery. [CBGB's closed well before the pandemic and parts of it have been reconstructed and permanently installed in the Brooklyn Museum [no kidding]. Cheers from NYC!!!

Cure and I moved to Croydon s.london had a great time in this era, being at college and able to voice my own opinions. and seeing the groups of that time live or meeting them in the ale houses. Being a budding guitarist I made a mental note of everything and then sat Infront of the TV and radio playing along with all or most of the hits from dire straits to Tina turner.

    I wish my sweet baby Robert had always known that he was so right from the beginning. But I bet he wouldn't change a thing. Can you imagine if Ian from Joy division had just come to the US and done his tour? I think that Robert played in a tour with Joy division. I wish that Ian could have talked with Robert more. I hate that Ian never came. I think that somehow things would have gone better, maybe somehow it would have helped him with his epilepsy and he could have found the right person and medicine to help him, and he would have realized that this is just another country and another place with the same kind of people that loved him just as much, like Robert did.

    You gotta be kidding! Where did you find this gem? We first generation Cure fans (I was 15 when this concert was filmed) would have literally killed for a copy of this, which appears to be a "master" copy. This was part of their Boys Don't Cry tour. Also, you will see that this was their "pre-image" era. The joke is is that one day a record executive attached to their label complained to Robert Smith's business manager that "the lads have no image...do something about it." The rest is rock history and legend. After Bauhaus and Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Cure became synonymous with the "pure Goth" look.
    Finally, they played "In your house" as a preview to the album they were apparently working on, SEVENTEEN SECONDS, a product of pop Goth perfection.

      @DaveAnchovies Před 3 lety +3

      i dont care, because Smith would not give a shit he put on weight and hadnt shaved with the hair and makeup, but i think it gave fans the wrong idea...i didnt appreciate Pornography intil i heard his seminal style of guitar playing and the awesome band until the hits came--but he loved Dinosaur Jr's cover of Just Like Heaven, he changed the way he played it. i was off the wagon when Kiss Me 3x came out, but Disintigration was redemption, in a way. For someone who gave so much, i had no problem with the Cure breaking big in the states...over a decade of being a cult band, nobody deserved a retirement than him. That said, his punk, post-punk, dark (i wont say goth), head on the door, a stab at psychedia, the Top...all have their place.

    • @DaveAnchovies
      @DaveAnchovies Před 3 lety +3

      another thing about the Cure, he didnt stay in one genre long...yes, hairspray and a look...the Top was a stab at psychedelic rock, Head On The Door and the bsides of that era were kinda a farewell as i had full become immersed in punk and hardcore--the only music my older brother hadnt led me to--i found it on my own. never let those Cure records get dust. the Cure, to me, were a punk band who evolved every few years and there was a period i thought it was over, but they came back. Loved the Dinosaur Jr cover and became fans of the band/. they didnt get stuck as a goth band for long...

    1980 best year for R. Smith and for The Cure. I must say this concert generally sounds splendid (in your house, another journey by train, M, at night, a forest, etc most of the songs are great in this concert, for some (3 imaginary boys for instance) it is the best version i have ever heard (secrets version is a masterpiece, as well as at night)... i do like keyboards and electronics in particular... singing is almost perfect; bass is great ; music is excellent. The whole is intense and sober all at the same time, dark and genuine, unfortunately this early The Cure (with the unique sound of Matthieu Hartley's keyboards) did not last long.

    • @eboethrasher
      @eboethrasher Před 2 lety

      1980 wasn't bad but I'll take 1981 or the energetic stuff from 1982. Honestly there's almost always good stuff from most every era until 1998. That is when Robert decided to go with a click track.

    • @xangirdeux473
      @xangirdeux473 Před rokem

      I agree, Hartley was the underrated key component here. Subtracting the keyboards in Seventeen Seconds would kill its atmosphere. It's a shame he didn't stay for at least one more album, Faith could've used his talents for sure. "Forever" is the only Faith era song that Hartley ever played live. But eh, everything happens for a reason, and Pornography wouldn't have been a masterpiece if he was still in the band (since he didn't wanna go down the super dark route).
