  • BMPCC 4K Viltrox Sigma 18-35: is Viltrox any good for pocket 4k?
    When it comes to using the Pocket 4k, it is very popular to use speedboosters. There are two main brands on the market: Metabones and Viltrox. Is the significantly cheaper Viltrox any good? Or should you get the $699 Metabones one?

      The Sigma 18-35 is one of the most utilized lenses in the indy cinema space, so used ones are similarly priced a new ones. I'd just buy a new one as they've dropped in price considerably since it was released, and you can make sure the retailer sells you one with the newest firmware.

    Just subbed! Your videos are great! Quick question, you say you don’t need autofocus as the viltrox doesn’t support it, however, don’t you need autofocus in some situations? How do you manage having to manually focus on every shot? Thanks :)

    • @JonBear
      @JonBear  Před 3 lety +2

      Super appreciate it Josh!
      On the BMPCC4K you can turn on focus assist, which will highlights red outlines around your in-focus subject.
      I set this to Medium. So grabbing focus is super fast and easy.
      Furthermore there is a button on the face of the camera that let's you zoom in on the image. With this you can easily see if it's in focus and it allows fine-tuning.
      The autofocus on Blackmagic is just tap to focus, so it's never meant to be used while recording. It's a cinema tool, and pros don't really use manual focus.
      If autofocus is important to you then I'd recommend you look into cameras from Sony or Canon. What type of stuff do you usually film?

      @JonBear  Před 3 lety

    I thought the Viltrox was plenty good and sharp too... until I finally bought a Metabones and saw the difference first hand. The Metabones is noticeably sharper, especially near the edges. It's also worth noting that almost every Viltrox out there needs adjusted for infinity focus. There are many CZcams videos on this.

    • @JonBear
      @JonBear  Před 3 lety +1

      Did you get the Metabones specifically designed for Black magic? I imagine it may be worth the price since it compensates for the sensor stack of the blackmagic.
      When I got my viltrox over a year ago for my GH5, it was after watching a comparison video from Zebra Zone who uses it on blackmagic. He copared the non-blackmagic-metabones to the viltrox was only a hair less sharp. Gerald Undone also has videos on it that solidified my choice.

    Your explanation is incorrect as you are not taking into account in crop factor. The 18mm is not a 12mm on the BMPCC. It is 18mm times 2x crop factor times 0.71x reduction.
    So the 18 becomes 36mm x 0.71 which is around 25mm equivalent on BMPCC 4k MFT sensor

    • @timeallofgreatestthe
      @timeallofgreatestthe Před 2 lety

      Actually, because it’s an APS-C lens the crop factor is reduced to about 1.2x without the speed booster. That’s why you get vignetting at its widest with the speed booster, your crop factor winds up being about .85 with the SB.

The sensor is larger, it has better low light and i can use my Sigma 18-35mm without extra equipment. Hey Milan! in my previous video I address this question 'why get a 4k over a 6k?'
      My conclusion is that:
      1. Pocket 6k needs to shoot in 6k if I want to film in braw - which means heavier files - and I don't need 6k video.
      2. When using a speedbooster, The sigma 18-35 will produce a wider image (almost as if the sensor is larger) on the pocket 4k than on the pocket 6k. It will also speed up the aperture to f1.2
      3. I already owned the speedbooster and lenses for M43 sensor cameras so it made a lot more sense to get the pocket 4k for me.
      In your case, if you don't already use m43 camera, then maybe the pocket 6k makes sense. Especially if you don't mind the massive file sizes from 6k video.

I own a Sony a6300 right now and have the problem that the 1080p looks disgusting and the 4k has massive rolling shutter. Maybe i could rent the 6K for specific projects? @@Milan-cf1xe If you have any experience at all, then I am sure you can get up to speed with the camera pretty quickly.
      It has no "auto" modes, so if you know the basics of iso/aperture/shutterspeed/whitebalance then you can get a handle on it.
      Other than that, it requires external power and external harddrive solutions in order to record for long sessions. If you decide to buy one, expect to pay at least 1000 euros extra for this stuff.
      But once you have one, you're working with industry gear. Good if you're selling a video service.
      If this sounds like too much, then consider upgrading to another Sony APSC camera that uses the same lenses you use now. I know a youtuber named That Icelandic Guy who only makes content about them. Maybe you can get some insight on how to make your a6300 pop
      Best of luck!

      Are you using a lens hood?
      The Sigma 18-35 is also an EF lens. I got vignetting when using the lens hood. The reason is because the viltrox will give your lens a wider image than on a apsc sensor that the lens was designed for.

When I'm for example at 50mm and at infinity focus no vignetting, but on 50mm with very near focal range very big Vignetting as long as I'm using full sensor size. It's not a total disaster because most Projects I shoot are full HD and 16:9. Which means I can Crop in when the vignetting occurs.
