All three of dgd's clean singers brought something to the table that worked. As a long time fan i consider each singer and album to be like flavors.
If you had absolutely shitted on my favorite band, I would've still subscribed. A1 production, presence, and pacing.
That seems as high a compliment as a person can give, so thank you very much!
Let’s be honest bro periphery’s vocals are pretty trash. Saw them open for DGD and was very disappointed.
One of my favorite things about DGD is - between Tilian, Kurt, and Jonny - every respective singer has a whole different influence on the band sonically. They do such a good job developing a sound around the strengths and the bands dynamics with each singer, while still maintaining that DGD sound. Also, been amazing seeing Jon Mess progress vocally over the years. Cause holy shit, those early days were painful at times.
Will swan is definitely the reason for that. He also has talked about writing to the sound of the singer so he does his part to match up the kind of style/playing to the vocal stylings of that particular singer.
Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean is borderline screamo because of this exact reason lmao.
Unpopular Opinion: You can find a lot of singers that sound like Jonny Craig and Kurt Travis. I didn't like either of them in the band.
@@trevorstarks9002 idk man jonny craig's voice is pretty unique, and kurt's influence on dgd was quite phenomenal
The best recommended video I've recieved all year
The naturalness of Tilian's high notes always reminds me of Anthony Green from Circa Survive, they make it sound so easy to walk around those high notes
Circa survive, dance Gavin dance, chiodos, emarosa 4 powerful vocal bands that stayed with me throughout middle school and high school
Anthony green from saosin* he will always be Anthony green from saosin to me, so much better than circa survive
Anthony green live is ehhh. He always sounds super sick and I’ve seen him live like 8 times.
The intro to that song is ridiculous... will swan is a god!!
DGD just surpassed Pan!c At The Disco as my daughters favorite band and I’m so absolutely excited and happy about it. She told me this on the way to school on her first day of 6th grade. 😊
You are very underrated, the production and effort in this video is amazing
I want him to look into Tree Village so bad. I used to play everything after 2012 by dgd exclusively but once I heard Carl Baker I fell in love with the rest of there stuff.
Thats awesome! I pretty much did the same thing. I got introduced with mothership and only listened to that for a pretty long time but then I had them on a radio once and it put on Carl Barker and eventually Blue Dream as well and then I really went through and listened to almost everything.
Its crazy how their sound is consistent on all of their records (probably just because of Will's guitar work and Matt's drums) but yet they still sound like an entirely different band every record as well.
Going through their discography is a such a trip but its so awesome. I love the way the band is going with Tillian as well
no no no tilian don't take my confetti awayyyyy!
(Fave band btw, their live performances are stellar! )
I seen them twice, but dgd sounds identical live to studio
Especially we own the night
They're amazing and gonna see them again in March or April 2020
You’re so expressive. It’s intoxicating. So well spoken, lovely to listen to!
Swanposting appreciates this
Didn’t even talk about the legendary Will Swan smh
You’re definitely not alone. I listened to We Own The Night several hundreds times in a matter of weeks.
This video scratches the surface of what makes DGD fucking amazing. If you are focusing on current era. Great breakdown either way.
This is awesome. Chucky vs The Giant Tortoise was my intro to DGD as well. Thats cool considering how large their discography is. I love that you found the humor in their absurd lyrics but that you saw the appeal of their musicianship as well.
Yes you used timbre correctly lmao.
Awesome review, honestly I watched this to just try and reaffirm my bias after seeing Anthony Fantano's review of DGD. This did reassure me that im not crazy, and other people understand the appeal.
Nice video
Dance Gavin Dance and I The Mighty are tied for my top favorite bands, you should totally check out I The Mighty.. they're kind of amazing
Isaiah Wood silver tongues is a banger I always listened to it a lot my junior year
hell yeah, I've seen and met ITM a few times and they are solid dudes and incredible performers.
This review was so well done and insightful. Part of it was a perfect summation of why I like this band that I hadn't realized or voiced. If this channel's other videos are anywhere as good, I'll be happy.
I’ve never found anyone else who will wear in a song like me the same way you do. Where when I love it, it’s all I want until I can satiate the craving for it. It’s awesome to know you’re the same way, especially about a band I’ve done the same with.
Ps: my girlfriend introduced me to dgd too. Nice!
amen to this. when i find a new song that is THAT song, i will play it over and over and over for days. drives my wife nuts X'D
I was very surprised to scroll down and notice you only have the amount of subs you do. Such a professional way of reviewing artists/albums and it is done in a captivating way. Great video!
And most of the ones I have are from this video! Thank you very much. :)
Damn youtube just recommending videos from months ago.. I appreciate it!
Thoroughly enjoyed this! Love the structure and you have a pleasant speaking voice.
Will be seeing them next month for the millionth time. Their live performances are insane, CANT WAIT.
I am fascinated by your lighting
(Also one more sub, great video !)
Love this video man. You hit the nail on the head. Their music is so amazing I even love hearing people talk about it.
This is by far one of my favorite bands, and you bringing up The Bunny The Bear, made me exactly happy lol.
You’re really well spoken! All your insights were spot-on, but I also couldn’t help but notice you didn’t really edit your video to clip out mumbles or mistakes in your speech. If you didn’t edit it at all/improvised your talking points, major props to you, the video was fantastic!
Fantastic review! I am a very new DGD fan and am completely immersed in their entire discography. I was fortunate enough to see them live a few months ago and was completely blown away by their performance.
Thank you so much! They really are just so good live and also not live. There's a video here on CZcams that is like a 30 minute breakdown of Young Robot's individual audio tracks, and it was really fascinating. And I'm typically not into that sort of thing at all.
It's this, if you're curious: czcams.com/video/_6M-rXppLTA/video.html
This is one of the best band reviews I have ever seen lol. I love your aesthetics as well!
I wish I could watch DGD live too!
My all time favorite band , glad to see the sucsess they got lately, awesome video by the way
I couldn’t have said it any better. This band will go down as one of the greatest.
Easily subscribed, the BlessThisMess hashtag was what made me do it. Love the way you describe DGD, absolutely amazing.
This video has he checking out more of your channel. This is an amazing video, and I love the band on top of that!
This is great, haven’t seen other videos from you but I like your style and my listening tendencies are a lot like yours haha
1.4K subscribers!? You deserve way more, love this content, straight to the point, with contrasted commentary. Love it!
Crazy thing is that I had literally half this many a week ago.
Thank you very much!
This is genuinely exactly what I've been saying and trying to get people to understand (i.e. my parents who cant understand why I listen to "that shit") I can never quite articulate how the contrast works and how incredible it is
me like when people say good thing about thing me like
I'm happy to see someone talk about Dance Gavin Dance like this. They're still underground for mainstream audiences and hearing someone talk about them in the way you did was great. Imma sub the fuck out of this channel. Nice production on the video as well. Usually, someone with your range of sub numbers has awful production quality and you've got the opposite, good shit my guy
I’ve been listening to dgd for about 3 years now, and you’re right on the money brother
I mainline individual songs as well. Squeeze every bit of enjoyment out of it.
Chucky is also the song I use to introduce people to DGD, such a banger.
Can't think of it being anywhere other than first on the album.
Great video buddy.
Not a word about the genious behind it all. Will writes the most insane melodies and riffs that define the band. His synergy with Matt has really developed over the years and for me is what makes this band so solid. Great review don't get me wrong
Loved this. Been a DGD fan for 2 years now and I know you got them down to a tee.
Nice I've been a fan since down town battle mountain was dropped, my first DGD song was the backwards pumpkin song been in love ever since
DGD for life
The guitarist throws those amazing stabs at the crowd just as easy as he makes it sound in the studio lol
Daaaamn why there are only 1.2k of subs?? That`s awesome content, it looks and sounds awesome.. Man, I wish you the very best on CZcams, keep going.
Man, this time last week I had like 800. This video has completely blown up, which is fascinating to me.
Thank you!
@@TheWeekIReview I suppose DGD-community will help a lot more. And together we will wait your next video ;)
Dallas Green is also a genre chameleon, having done post hard-core and then moving to folk and blues, while sounding incredible and comfortable in each
I appreciate you so much for everything you said, I agree 100%. They are my favorite band and this video made me very happy
Awesome video. Glad I found it
Aye, my gf introduced me to them too! I bought her Mothership for her birthday since I knew she liked them and she played it in the car constantly. Then we saw them at Warped Tour the next month and they were fucking awesome!
Holy shit. I thought I was the only one who'd listen to one track for days/weeks.
Hahahhaa the entire DGD fan base listens to only DGD 80% of the time. It’s their magic
Love the video, earned my sub
Listening to DGD is like eating at a super elegant fine dining restaurant. It’s just so intellectually comprised, and stimulating.
Only people with 130 or more IQ can truly understand the pure genius of dance gavin dance. /s
While Periphery is a band that makes some of my favorite music ever, I'd have to agree that their live stuff just doesn't really cut it for me. Great video, and big agree about your points with DGD as well.
I've loved dance Gavin dance for almost a decade. I'm finally going to see them for the first time this October and Las rageous. I am so fucking STOKEDDDD
I know I’m extremely late on this. Like 5 months late. But I felt a need to comment because I appreciate knowing I’m not the only person who gets absorbed or enthralled by a singular track to the point I listen to it for days if not a full week without changing the song. Knowing someone else appreciates that kind of listening experience and does so on a semi-regular basis. I remember the first song I heard by dance Gavin Dance was a pure fluke as I was listening to a playlist that feature another band I was obsessing over called Hands like Houses and I remember seeing their name but just kind of ignoring it as I rocked to Monster over and over until I eventually let the playlist go on. When I did I stumbled across midnight crusade. I was instantly hooked. I listened to song after song till I heard Head Hunter for the first time. It became my obsession and has really made me seek out videos and other information on the band. And I think it’s due in large part for many of the reasons you said. But at the fore front it was likely because I was captured by Tillian’s voice. It encapsulated everything I had desired for so long in a vocalist. And while I found a lot of vocalists I loved. He has easily become my favorite. His voice is melodic but still possesses the necessary edge to make him fit in with the genre. So I appreciate that someone else finally put it into words.
I find it super interesting the way Jon writes lyrics, it honestly seems like he's writing more from the perspective of a rapper than a screamer, he focuses way more on rhyme schemes, alliteration and rhythm than telling a story which is super unconventional and incredible
Dude this was amazing please make more stuff
Been doing it for a year, though admittedly most of them aren't about post-hardcore bands.
@@TheWeekIReview well I just found you through recommendation and just from this video alone I'm excited to watch the rest of your content
This is a great review!
Yo how the fuck do you have less than 600 subs?? No joke I think you're better than 90% of these other music review channels. First video of yours for me and I'm subscribing rn.
Well thank you! I think you inadvertantly answered your own question: because I'm not a music review channel. I'm a whatever-the-fuck review channel and so every week I disappoint some segment of my audience, so it grows... but more slowly than I think it would if I actually just focused on one topic.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, though! Means a lot.
i got into this band this year. they have been one of my biggest band obsessions in a long long time., they have become one of my top 5 favorite bands of all time. dgd is one of the best bands of the last 10 or so years period
whats a band gotta do for that last .7? Great video keep it up!!
Mothership is how I got hooked onto DGD , and than going backwards and getting into all the other songs and artificial selection album when it came out! Going to first concert in philly April 3rd
I actually have a chest piece tattoo inspired by DGD. So glad to see a video like this.
I can’t leave a dance Gavin dance album review now because you have set the bar so high
Not sure if you got to listen to Man of the Year or Evaporate live, but those two blew my socks off with how amazing they were live. Man of the Year was definitely my favorite.
This video should have way more views on it. DGD is one of my favorite bands and you really nailed their sound and what they are all about. Kudos dude.
PS: why did you use blue and red lights in the video? not knocking it cause it does looks cool, but i can't help but wonder why the not so standard lighting choice?
Well thank you!
So, the actual reason is that in the earlier days off this channel, I used different primary lights than I do now, and I didn't like the way that they looked during night shoots all that much. Since concerts (especially heavier ones) tend to use intense colored lighting, I felt it would look better than regular white.
If I were to do it now, it's unlikely that I would have used the color like this... though I still like the way it looks.
Amazing band 😍 can't wait till I finally get to see them
I watched this when you first posted it, and since then I have become a huge fan of DGD. There was a time I used to be very skeptical towards poppy sounding music, and I kept hearing about DGD in the metal community. After checking out what I believe was Inspire The Liars I was intrigued, but not all in at the time. This video stayed in the back of my head for a while though, and I think it's the reason I was eventually swayed into enjoying their music. I've gotten to the point that I can enjoy any form of music, which is important for being musician because any form of music can inspire you or teach you something different.
Well... this is one of the nicest things anyone has said to me. Thank you so much. I'm glad that I was able to help you along with that. Life is just easier when you can enjoy wide varieties of music, and certainly as an artist experiencing the full breadth of an artform's possibilities is crucial!
@@TheWeekIReview You're welcome! I'm just so happy I found this video again, so I could tell you you're doing a great job. Keep up the great work man!
Straight up one of, if the not the best band of the generation. Loved every album and listened to them from the beginning. Glad you enjoyed them. My wife and I had two of thier songs for our wedding on the dance floor and are seeing them in vegas
I am so happy I saw this video. I love Dance Gavin Dance. 😻
They have so many bops.
Been listening since Acceptance Speech. 🙂
went to go see DGD when i only knew a few songs when Acceptance Speech was out I was 100% hooked ever since. They put on a great performance
Oh God The Bunny The Bear I haven't heard of them in YEARS LOL
Good video, keep it up!
I did the "listen to the song thousands of times until it makes no sense anymore." with Garden in the Bones by Periphery.
Holy FUCK how nuts, i commented this before your comment on them in this hahhah
You earned my sub on this one man
Kurt Travis era is the goat dgd. Still one of my favorite bands of all time
im really glad he mentioned mcr in this vid because im a huge fan of both dgd and mcr lol
Great video.
My 2nd favorite band. Man this guys are amazing.
Favorite Band!
Best Analysis of them as well!
Great review on the band. You described and conveyed things well. Overall a great video! The only thing I'd like to critique to hopefully help you out is to light yourself with more natural light. Having the two color lights for a hair light is a great idea and I've used it in videos ive shot. But to have that being your key light hurts my eyes after a while. Your background is lit perfect, and everything else seems to be done pretty well, but just from a videographers perspective as well as an audience member, fixing your key light to be easier on the eyes would help a lot! Hope that helps and keep going! Enjoyed the video!
Well thank you! I use colored light on my face very rarely, but it's a valid critique and I appreciate you taking the time to make it!
@@TheWeekIReview I've seen some of your other videos with colored lights and they weren't quite as harsh. Even if you desaturated the blue and red a bit it wouldn't be as straining on the eyes. But it's always best to do subtle changes when it comes to editing your color grade on photos and video! Check out channels like mango street, alan palander, and peter mckinnon to learn some techniques that will take it to the next level! Keep up the good work though, I enjoy the content!
Fwiw: I don't color grade. Clearly you wish I did, and that's fair enough, but what you see is exactly what came out of my camera.
No worries! That's totally up to you whether you want to invest the time to learn all that stuff on the video production side of your content. It's a lot and can be overwhelming for sure. But like I said it's your content, do what works for you. I just thought I'd extend my knowledge to help out. CZcams comments are often times harsh and downright rude, so I try to keep it positive, helpful, and encouraging when I can! Anyway, if you ever have any questions I'd be happy to help! 👍
I hope you make a part 2 about Will Swan and Matt Mingus.
This is a great review you obviously know what you’re talking about and I loved the knowledge you made sure you had of the band before going into it so don’t take this the wrong way the lighting creeped me out the entire video
I loved the review, its form, its content, and just the way you explain the topic shows how much you’re at least as passionate as them! Just maybe one thing- i was kinda sad you didn’t mention the music quality more than that but only focused on the vocals. It’s the first video i see of your channel, so maybe there is something i ignore about this concept and it’s done on purpose! But guitar, bass and drums are some of the major elements that make DGD what it is, additionally with the vocals!
Someone else said the same thing, and it's not something that even had occurred to me but is an entirely valid critique. I fully agree that the instrumentation is a huge part of what makes them great, but in my mind "Look, they're really good and can flawlessly move between musical styles seemed like enough when I was putting this whole thing together.
I'm sorry I made you sad.
This is also very true, your video was not long enough for you could have time to talk about it really much and go into detail. Thank you for your reply!
Also your video made me really happy so I was only sad for a couple of seconds
I seen them the first time when they came to Calgary for their first time! I didn’t get to meet them, but me and buddies got to meet Crown the Empire 👌.
Noice. I remember going to a sold out Of Mice and Men show to see Crown the Empire as an opener. I left once OM&M came on.
i was too introduced to yes, DGD, as the cool kids call it, by my girlfriend. however this was 2009. and it was the death star album. and to this day is for sure my favorite band ever.
Your lighting is wicked sick
This is the only band that has stayed my #1 for over 5 years. This is my favorite review so far. I wish you had gotten into them pre-Tillian, I think the review would be similar but also quite different. If that makes sense?
I mean, it would be a different review if I were to make it today. I have just expanded on the way I do things. Certainly, I would have focused more on the evolution of the sound and how the different singers affected the sound.
Related: Prisoner is a great as hell song.
Have you checked out Hail The Sun?
DGD is my gd church. excellent video n editing too. well deserved sub!
Well thank you! I've been a little gobsmacked by all the recent appreciation for this three month old video. Am hoping that there isn't a mass exodus next week when everyone realizes that I don't usually talk about post-hardcore bands, or even music...
But I'm glad people are enjoying it now!
Saw tillian with tides of man, we came as romans, and sleeping with sirens..It was 2007, I was 17 and the show changed my life. I played the album Empire Theory (while bingeing DTBM). Crazy thing was I found both bands with in a year of each other and they had nothing in common.. I thought. Both equally meant so much to me at the time. Both were so damn crazy live too. Tillian at th time looked like a cross between a grandma and Kurt Cobain (seriously he did, look it up lol) but made up for it. He took the stage with a baby blue telecaster, all shy and shit.. than boom. This dude was tearing it up! I mean wtf it was the greatest thing I ever had seen. Still is even after seeing DGD with every vocalist, every album. I say all this to come to the realization...Tillian made a good life/business decision joining DGD, but Tides of Man all but dried up. Wish he could have just done both honestly. I’m conflicted. Shit.
I used to think no one could top Jonny Craig. Then I thought I could never imagine dgd with anyone but Kurt. But now that Tilian is lead singer, I seriously think he is the very best talent for the band and is the best thing that ever happened to dance Gavin dance
Right?
Don't let that guy who threatened to kill me if I said Tilian was more talented than "JC" see you say that!
You just won a loyal subscriber 👍
Okay, I'm thirty seconds into this video and I have to say, dude, the way you listen to music isn't odd at all - I do the exact same thing. Maybe I'm odd too, but fuck man, I love doing that lmao
Was the show you went to at playstation theater? If so, I was there too! It's great to see other people discovering this band and coming to appreciate their style!
Jon Mess has said his lyric style is centered more around how it sounds when he screams it, then what the words actually mean. He also said its up to you to decide if the lyrics mean anything. Love DGD
I believe there's meaning
No, i believe there's nothing
@@skeletalsounds_ I do too!
I HAVE SOMETHING IMPORTANT TOO!
So he went to the Cedric Bixler school of writing lyrics? Hey whatever works man.
