nice and easy video! - just a headsup. If im not mistaken the NFS client is not available in the Home-version of Win11 (nor prolly Win10) - you need Pro/Enterprise but there might be 3rd party software that can do the trick? And how is the performance compared to samba when transfering 1: big files or 2: tons of small files? I've never tried out NFS since samba have been fine for my usecase :)

You are absolutely right, I've pinned this as I should have mentioned that in the video :)

I tried NFS on Windows few years ago. It was horrible experience. For Windows, stick with SMB; this is where WIndows shines.

No encryption no authentication. Everyone can access the data just needs to spoof the IP and everyone else can read the data plane and manipulate it.

If security is a concern and you happen to run *nix clients you might look into sshfs.

Very handy Gary, we use samba everywhere because of a single Windoze PC in the office. Used to have a Ghost BSD desktop which mounted the NAS with NFS and it was the most stable... Will examine NFS for the Linux machines.

Fantastic Video! I'm not sure why I was bothering with CIFS. Thank you!

When I bought my first home server about a year or two ago I set up all my network shares as samba shares but after I learned about NFS I've never gone back. NFS is super simple to learn and it's extremely reliable. Really one of the best things about Linux for sure.

    Thanks Gary
Would be usefull to know how to Match and manage file permissions and folder access with then user thar is logged in Windows. I normally use bsd and linux workstations and that is very easy, but for people that use Windows as client maybe si not clear at all. Best regards!

iSCSI is also an option for file-serving

As much as I like FreeBSD, when I compare it with management tools in Linux (systemctl, etc.), FreeBSD looks very ancient and old fashioned. The way you manage modern Linux distro is IMO so much better than any UNIX flavor. I think this may be one single reason for much higher Linux adoption as general purpose OS rather than FreeBSD, which tends to be focused more on vertical markets (storage arays, firewalls, vpn appliances, etc.).

systemd sucks... one program to run it all, violating the Unix principle do one thing and do it right.

@@JonitoFischer You're talking about "UNIX principle" like it was some law of perfection. I agree that things should be as simple as they possibly can be. But when it comes to systemd, most of the Linux world disagrees with your opinion.

EDIT: Mmm. And now I realize that Mattermost file transfer is limited by server memory size. But still:
Have you considered setting up your own Mattermost server instead? Permissions are simply who’s in the thread. Comms and file sharing - 2 birds, 1 stone.
