Well worth the wait, what a fantastic story. Love those Hull & Barnsley Railway tunnels but so sad to see the state they are now in, luckily I was able to explore them when they were in a better state.
Another excellent episode. Always learn something new from your episodes. I don't know if you are aware of the Policing history of the docks. I was a member of the British Transport Police and I worked on Hull Docks. This came to an end in April, 1985. In the early days of the docks, when they were owned by the railway companies, their Police carried out duties on the docks. When the British Transport Docks Board eventually took over, the B.T.Police carried on the Policing of the docks but were paying a fee, to hire the Police, to British Railways. Eventually in the 1980's the docks were privatised and as you said in your video, the shareholders wanted more money and they realised that all this money was being paid to hire the Police and so they told the railways, we don't want your Police, we can hire security at a quarter of the price, the local Police can deal with serious offences and this puts more money in our pockets. The last shift, which I was a part of, took place on the 13th of April, 1985 and brought to an end a part of the history of the B.T.Police on the docks.
I was a dog handler on the docks and the first Police dogs ever used in this country, where on Hull Docks. This was in 1908 and at the time it was the North Eastern Railway Police. We used to have the kennels on Alexandra Dock, just below the railway lines, near the overhead bridge on Hedon Road. Also another snippet of history, when the dockers would spot a Police Officer in the area, the shout of ' Paddy Kelly' would resonate through the sheds and along the quayside, warning that Police where around. It was supposedly to have originated from when the docks were being built by the Irish navvies.

Once again a incredible video ,and with a lot of focus on my baby the HnB ,nice photo's of A1s awaiting scrapping at Drapers and B 16s ,plus the photos of Weedley and sugar loaf tunnels all in all a superb production ,i have said before this is TV quality production .

Excellent as ever Jamie! I agree that this is one to watch in sequence with the other films on The Docks. A wet afternoon off work would be a good one for this, and no doubt April will provide. At 2'30''-2'42" you have a shot there which perfectly exemplifies a certain feeling of Hull, one of those things that's almost impossible to put into words, only music could get even close. A picture which should be of use to Hull's tourist people I reckon.. Beautifully done as ever. Nice one Jamie! 🌟👍

Spent most of my childhood playing on Alexandra dock before it was reopened. The hydraulic tower and the Dead Bod jetty were favourites. Many happy memories.

Love your content matey really eye opening thing we pass every day without realising. 😊 Have you thought of doing the history of a specific building? There are some amazing places hidden away just in old town alone
I tend not to usually be so specific, but I have done a few random episodes on particular buildings, like the old gas works in Cottingham, or the remains of the old Hull Central goods station near Humber Dock. So who knows?
@@hullhistorynerd just got me wondering earlier while popping into Tesco's the old children's hospital near spring bank with the really nice white decorative mural above the entrance there must be some history there. Lol

Hi my Grandfather was a boxer on the dock cannot find what they did anyone can you help me? he later became a lock keeper thank you.
I'm afraid my knowledge isn't quite that detailed! The fishing heritage centre on Hessle Road have some extensive records though, might be worth checking there to see if they have anything.
The building of the hull and Barnsley railway, justified at the time, merely confirms that when nationalised and under a single ownership, so many lines were unwanted and unneeded duplicates.
Indeed, far less so in the North East than elsewhere thanks to the machinations of George Hudson in the 1840s, however! His empire building on such a large scale meant that we had a fairly trim network compared to the south east in particular!
Customer satisfaction and shareholder value are not mutually exclusive, in fact you don't have long term share value growth if you don't have satisfied customers. By far and away companies run by government, be it local or national provide the worst customer service, they have very little motivation to improve service and efficiency because they either have a monopoly (usually bad when private companies have a monopoly too) or simply raise taxes to cover the inevitable losses these organisations generate.
And yet...
