- Here is a drum mics/drum cam shot of the 2nd half of Nightmare to Remember. I left the crowd footage of them in at the end. They're so loud they're leaking through the drum mics with a delayed band echo of the venue walls. And no, those are not foot double strokes as thought by some. They are single strokes with dynamics/accents.
I was trying out a new camera and this is how I played the song that night as I do change parts to keep myself amused. It chopped its own regions, so here's one that is unchopped. - Hudba

@@victorroncaglia1798 Just being pedantic here but for anyone wondering, originally the snares are 8th triplets. Mangini turns them into 16ths which was pretty crazy, real nice.
So from 12 snare's per bar to 16.

He explained in an interview that they're closer than they look, he actually has to barely raise his arm to reach them and it's much more confortable for him.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it probably also helps with the mic setup! His sound engineer must like him :)

Ralf Egger I think he’s actually kind of boring. Doesn’t have the feel. Marco,Aquiles,and Lang have more feel and creativeness. As I honestly don’t see the technical part of him. It think it’s all very basic. Idk that’s just my opinion.

It's a shame but I highly doubt all of Mike's intricate ghost strokes, accents, rebounds and just the general complexity of everything he does can truly be appreciated in a live arena audio environment. Even with the best acoustics there's no way the audience can pick all of it up.
Love that he can switch between left and right hand lead so flawlessly, awesome!

He's as funny to talk with as he is to watch. Had dinner with him and several others after a clinic in Waterford mi.

Music is not just a competition of who is faster or better. In fact I would claim that Thomas Lang’s music who surely technically is a great drummer is very boring and uninvolving.
Mangini’s blast are still so good that normal drummers can admire them without someone telling them how average he is... ;-)
He is an amazing drummer and performer and it’s pretty clear why he made it in the Dream Theatre. The audition was extremely difficult.

First off this isnt a competition between portnoy and ManGini , that said, Not only does mike make it look effortless, but it is so spot on. Its mind blowing how fast and articulate he plays, Massachusetts breeds some exceptional Talent, because along with the hard work I know he and others have put in, there is a certain level of God given talent in them as well.

Mastered the techniques.
I think open handed drummers tend to look slow or barely moving compared to the standard closed position. Theres something about crossing your arms over the hi-hat and snare that adds to visual flair.
There are, of course, exceptions like Gene Hoglan.

I like this song very much. First it was for the lyrics, as they described a car accident on the time my father had one back when this was released.
And after the Audition, it's the first DT song I have seen Mangini playing. And he crushed it since this event.

Mangini's hand and foot independence, dexterity, endurance, consistency is the greatest ive ever seen. The amount of practice and effort is very evident, it is like the metronome is following him
I actually very much like this setup. Makes for 2 different planes of stuff. And it makes it easy to see movement behind the kit.

Sir Mike Mangini is really one of the greatest drummer in the world!
I saw Mike do a solo at the Astoria London with Steve Vai. At one point he played poly tempos. He was maintaining two tempos. Isolating his brain! Half the audience got it, the other half started booing. I will never forget. It was astonishing.
Yeah, I remember him in Steve Vai concert, too, in 2001. I did not know him back then.
In solo section he did crazy shit, mimicking every beat Vai mumbled in his month.
They also had a badass guitarist/keyboardist, too. He also mimicked Vai's mouth blabber melodies first on guitar, then on keyboard then finally left hand on guitar right hand on keyboard at the same time. Absolute shit!!!! I never forgot that. I don't know his name. He wore a funny clowny outfit.

@@jelleepit yeah. After writing my message I looked it up. Actually it was 2000 Vai's Ultra Zone tour. And I learned it was Keneally. I even found a video of Bulgaria concert on youtube. The only video from that tour interestingly.

As a drummer, my discomfort level with his cymbals are as high as his cymbals.
Brandon Erickson I find his set up super comfortable and everything makes sense.
i watched him saying that it's not that really high, it's not that his arms are fully extended to reach those high positioned cymbals and toms.

Plus it avoids bad mic pick ups from other drums
I also play my cymbals higher so I can cross my hands better while riding such as on a crash cymbal while performing tom accents

Watched DT 2 years ago and drums sounds so good when you are actually there. Would be cool to see Mike more energetic like in audition videos.
This finally puts to rest the "Mangini has no feel/groove" argument. Mangini is a phenomenal drummer, its just that whoever's in charge of the engineering cough*JPandJR*cough is not doing him justice.
