1956 Tonka Cargo King Semi Truck Hauler Restoration

- I purchased this 1956 Tonka Cargo King Semi Truck off eBay January of 2022 for $100.78. It was in dire need of help. Overall it was very complete for being 66 years old. Outside of missing a rear trailer gate, mud flaps and one hubcap everything was there. The body was in extremely rough shape and ended up taking multiple coats of filler primer which I didn't show, just due to the boring nature of spraying and sanding over and over again. After filling the body with high temp filler and high build primer it came out super smooth. It had a couple minor imperfections that show in just the right light. While taking the truck apart I found what appears to be a white mold in-between the tires, which I though was pretty weird, however I do believe this at one time was a flower pot from the dirt that was in it. I made an attempt to save the original wood floor before deciding to replace it with new. I remade the mud flap bracket and tandem axle plates by cutting the blanks out on the CNC mill and then made a stamping die on my resin 3D printer, once cured, I was able to use a hydraulic press to stamp or emboss the details into the reproduction parts. This is the first time ever trying this process and I was super happy with how it came out. Definitely opens doors to some additional parts I can make in house. The aluminum bed has more imperfections than what I would like however for being 66 years old I was pleased with the outcome. Thanks for watching!

Thanks to you these beautiful toys live on !!!!!....I can't believe that people were so careless about the toys they once played with....great restoration on ALL OF THEM... THANKS
3-D printing, parts machining, and die stamping, all in one restoration? Outstanding!
I truly believe the patient attention to each small detail of this project really brings out true authenticity of the original vintage truck. Truly magnificent work.
It is great to see old "decent" tonka and other vehicles being restored.
I really enjoy watching you restore these classics.
It is nice to know someone out there takes an intrest in restoring old toys like this, keep it up.
Best video yet! And you really do have The Most Interesting Tools for your use.
Your skills and techniques have increased so much over the years. This is a stunning example of that. I am totally impressed. I love to watch you work. I restore toys myself for my own collection but you Sir are on a much higher level than me. Looking forward to the next one. I hope it is the tank. Wink wink.
Thanks so much Shawn Fisher!😊 I was really excited to try stamping parts in this video! The tank is coming soon, Just waiting on a few additional parts yet and hopefully my new lathe to come in

@@ChipChannelRestorations oh boy more new toys (Lathe)
@@ChipChannelRestorations hi
@@callenruby4050 Hi
I'm glad that there are people out there who restore things back to fantastic and new condition, too many times I tossed things out even though I didn't want to, because I lack knowledge of how to fix it, and skill.
Amazing that a kid's toy from the 1950s outlasted all the appliances you buy today! Beautiful work!
I've seen other "restorers" videos but none are as enjoyable to watch nor have the skills you do and their finished pieces reflect that. Thanks for an interesting & relaxing hour.
Two things amazes me, one that there are people who let such a beautiful toy rot away and two, that there are people who can restore them like new... wonderful job...❤️
What a beauty. The only thing I like more than seeing what you do to your old little boy toys is the big boy toys you use to fix them all up!!
Never ceases to amaze me how a rusty old piece of junk can be turned into something show room new.
You have me addicted... I went and bought a sandblaster to restore an old army gas tank for my Jeep. :) Thank you for your inspiration, I can't imagine how much you have invested in tools and time for these projects.
This was an extremely thorough and accurate restoration using some very sophisticate equipment. This truck and trailer would be a great display piece in someones home or office. Beautiful~
Oh my word, what a fabulous restoration, brilliant. Thank you.
Ok , you got me! Beautiful work.
I'm a girly girl now, but I used to crawl around with my brothers in the dirt, driving Tonka trucks. My personal favorite was a Semi hauling a 6 horse trailer. Wish I had them now! I'm 66 now! My dad took the horses from us, painted them up and put them with his horse collection! Haha!
Imagine all the cool stuff that trailer hauled over the years. My dad would have been 8 years old in 1956. This truck was probably the cat’s meow to his generation.
Quite the Chip factory you're building. If I hadn't watched the video, it would be hard to believe that something that far gone could be brought back to shine again the way it first did in some child's eyes!
Thank you Ray Wood! I'm super excited to keep adding more tools to the shop, I hope to some day be able to remake all of the parts for one of these toys.
Most awesome truck restoration ever.
Wow, the toys you have to repair these projects is impressive.
I may be a tool hoarder by trait haha. Thank you Grumpyoldtimer!
I think you have surpassed the Tonka factory in quality workmanship. These would be gem level.
A spectacular job of restoring every single piece in this massive project. What is even more impressive to me though, is the masterpiece of video editing done to make this process look so smooth and seamless.
WOW! You've got ALL the toys...and I'm not talking about the things you restore! CAD program, CNC, 3-D printer, lathe, all the Dremel stuff, welder, professional spray booth with filtration, sandblaster, oven for curing powder coat paint....I love it, and am partially jealous...(although I lack the math skills it takes to use the first three items I mentioned)...
I am 71, and I had this exact toy as a child. The only thing I think I remember that was different was that the rear slide door was also corrugated like the rest of the trailer side. Otherwise a beautiful restoration as always.
Excellent restore! I can just imagine Christmas morning. All the great presents under the tree! This included!
Would make for an amazing Christmas morning! Thanks for watching Michael Batts!
I don't think I've seen a vehicle that needed your talented hand more than this one. From such a revolting start to such a great finish. Fantastic!
Chip, your truck was cat scanned, and approval was instant. Nice job on the restoration of this truck.
Epic! And the most amazing tools. Your attention to detail is so satisfying to watch. Love, someone who works with messy data and broken Excel worksheets all day...
For me, circular references are the worst!
Keen eye for detail!
Thank you for your time and talent!
My pleasure Ms Lorry! Thank you for watching!
So happy! Another beautiful restoration.
Thanks again Ruth m Tumolo!
I’ve always wondered where these toys have hiding all these years to end up looking like this when you got them. In a lake, old garbage dump, farmers field, roadside ditch? Certainly not someone’s attic….not rusted away like this. And then you work your magic and bring them back to life…amazing.
That tractor trailer might look better then it did brand new in 1956. You put alot of love and care into it.
Painstakingly & meticulously done! It passed the Cat's 59:02 inspection too! All the new tools and techniques add a new flavour to each episode. Brings back some sweet childhood memories too. Many a times, I feel that the Tonka toys you restore are better than they were bought brand new from the Toy store!
Poor little red truck please to see you got it will be fantastic when you get it done .I love this channel I am amazing at just how much work takes for one Restoration thank you for sharing keep your videos coming

Extra toasty! Must have sat in a barn for 40 years. :) Very nice result!
Thanks Ken K!
Fantastic! A million dollar restoration for sure!
As much as I love the skill and presentation of the restorations...the subtle brand of whimsical humor is the icing on the cake.
You are a positive person.. I love your posts that make me feel optimistic and cheerful. traffic acceptance

Beautiful restoration better than new
Chip, I could watch your videos in their entirety , excellent as always
Thank you Aj Koots!!
Beautiful restoration. Your skill amazes me every time. I never look at old metal vehicles the same when I am in antique stores.
Wow! So great to see all the different tools old and new that you used. The truck looks wonderful.
I have never seen a rust bucket come to life like this-it was great saving the toy from a smelter's fire. The replaced board was a plus-the old one could not hold well with new nails. Now if you will excuse me I need to watch your other restores.
Wow!!! All I say every time I watch one!!! Looks better than new!!!
Absolutely beautiful, fantastic job, you are a very skilled restoration expert. Thank you because you made my day.
Congratulation Chip Channel for the Fábio and Rafael from São Carlos, São Paulo, Brazil. The best restauration this ford truck, by Tonka. Long Life the Channel.
Another awesome restoration Chip! You did incredible job saving this old Tonka with what looked like a million miles judging how narrow the axles got
Awesome restoration chip as always. If I may point out one thing the landing gear for the trailer is on backwards .
Wow, awesome restoration. Beautiful semi tractor trailer. You have a lot of cool toys now to do these incredible restorations. How fun. Your talents are amazing. Thank you for sharing them and the adorable Beaker. 😸💕😊💕😸
Great work as always! Awesome to see your trailer was able to be cleaned up and buffed out.
I have been looking forward to the next restoration
Thank you , Nice job .
(And we wont mention the mud-flap bar ) 😉
🐺
I applaud your patience on these challenging projects, I guess there's some truth to the saying the greater the challenge the greater the reward. Well done as always.
It looks like you've got some great projects ahead of you and I can't wait to see them
I've found some really rough toys recently. I'm super excited for some of them. Thanks soo much for watching Salemswhich!

Wow 😯 this poor truck REALLY needed a lot of restorative work! Great to see you persevere 👍🏼💪🏼
This restored toy is totally awesome right there nice 😊
This one was in rough shape. You did an amazing restoration on it though. I love watching you make parts for it. You definitely have an eye for details. Thanks for sharing 😀
Love the big projects , this one was great work. One day America may make good , sturdy toys again.
I did not think you could fix this one, but i was wrong, it was so rusty. i think you can fix anything and make it look better than new. Great work.
Another great restoration job you did on a toy truck their Chip
All I can say is wow. You bringing it back to life is such a joy to watch 👍
I'm proud of you. You did a nice job and you work with a guard on your grinder. Safety first!👍
Another great restoration. Looking forward to more. Tonka trucks are the best.
The finish on this one is beautiful. Nicely done.
Outstanding Job 👍👍👍👍 Great video!!!
Another excellent job!!
Good morning from Southeast South Dakota
Good morning Slim WantedMan!!
Always satisfying, Chip! Will keep wathing from the Philippines! ❤️
Thanks so much Kristel Regondola-Biscarra! Hello from the United States!
Замечательно! Такая красота получилась! Реставратор от Бога! 🎉
That must be the most worn axles I've ever seen on this channel... amazing job man!
One of your best yet. Congratulations!
You have the coolest tools Chip! If you can't replace it you make your own!
So funny dragging the parts off camera. Bravo turned out great. Glade the tonka truck was my first to watch your skills in action. 🤗
When ever I watch a toy being taken apart, I like to play this game call "what's the cleanest, shiny spot on the old rust toy?"
I am amazed at the beautiful, smooth surfaces you achieved. You have such an eye for detail as well as diligence and skill to create such awesome results. It is immensely satisfying to see such marred, broken vehicles become things of beauty! I love how you use sophisticated tools like CNC and 3D printing. As a long time equipment software engineer, I think about how cool it would be to develop the software embedded in those tools, controlling all that hardware. I'm such a tech geek. 😄 Keep up the great work!
Nice job 👍🏻 love the work you do on restoring these lost gems…
An incredible restoration especially with all of the challenges this one had!!
Thanks again Thomas Barnard! I was really excited to try the metal stamping for this toy
Excellent restoration and thank you for posting your video too!!
The before / after is really impressive 👍
Love your work 👍😀 when did you realize the mudguard hanger was on backwards? You fixed it without damaging any of the bits you restored too!
Don't think I didn't notice you attaching the mud flap bracket the wrong way around at first and then fixing it off camera haha ;)
This one was extra impressive work, you really worked miracles on this one!
Nothing like a good hot cup of coffee and a great restore Video from you 👍
THANKS Frank Sando!!!
Just admit it, you LOVE tools and GADGETS!
I don't think I've ever watched a CZcams channel that is more relaxing, and totally mesmerising. Thank you for you channel.
This is the best toy restoration channel on CZcams
Imagine back in the 1950's-60's getting toys like this for Xmas/birthdays etc. Even after all this time, they're still holding despite generations of being passed down. Anyone else have Ertl toys when they were still made from die-cast with real rubber wheels and such?
Nice restore. Cute kitty.
Good morning Chip. I’ll be back. Have to go. 🍻👍
Good morning Bill Mulholland! Have a great day!
The chrome powder, is always a blast to watch!
I like content like this, remember when I was little I played with toys.... awesome
Thanks for sharing this. Beautifully done.
You did an exceptional job on this restoration. It was in pretty rough shape at the beginning but you brought it back.
museum quality restoration. superb photographic skills.
I enjoyed this episode very much. I especially liked seeing how you polished the (aluminum?) siding on the trailer. Seems like I learn something new with every episode.
I didn't know these tin toys. But I imagine they are now better than those originally found in the showcase of old toy stores.
Hugs and congratulations for this work of art.
Something about watching you sandblasting is so satisfying
Another awesome restoration! I like the use of modern tools like the 3-D printer & CAD apparatus.
WOW All the tools that you have
