It is enormously encouraging to see that there are people and cultures who have not abandoned meaningful traditions, giving in to cynicism. Familial and community events are far more important than the shallow (usually commercial) trends of more "advanced" countries (such as ours in the U.S.) Thank you, Rick, for bringing this together so nicely.
You don’t need to believe in god to honor traditions (whether religious or not) that have significant cultural meaning.
@letters; Do you mean honoring the satanic practice of hiding behind trees, computer keys and silicone disguises and voice synthesizers?
@@melianna999 But there are a lot of ancient traditions that celebrate Spring in the same days. The very Christian Easter is an evolution of the Jewish Pesach, since Jesus died and resurrected around those days. And anyway, there are a lot of traditions that don't need any religious faith, such as national holidays: the 4th July for USA, the 14th July for France, the 25th April for Italy, etc. Or international holidays such Labour Day or Women's Day.
A good watch every year before Easter.🐣
Orthodox and Catholic Easter fall on the same Sunday in 25. I’m planning on going to Greece for the festival.
Thank you for this beautiful video. Somehow we tend to forget the true meaning of the Resurrection of Jesus but it is something we should never forget. He gave us life through His life and death.
Original Aramaic says not forsaken but in an idiom, "for this I have been spared" meaning, " This is My Destiny". God never forgets or forsakes Himself.
Correct, thank you.
Thank you for that explanation. Very grateful. Now I understand more
This completely reverses the meaning of the original psalm that Jesus was quoting:
"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me,
so far from my cries of anguish?
2 My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer,
by night, but I find no rest."
And for a Catholic there's no contradiction, since Jesus is true God AND true Man, so it's only right he had to experience ALSO the feeling of being forsaken by God that any human experiences at least some times in his/her life.
No it does not negate the Psalm that points to Christ. It merely confirms that Jesus was always conscious of His Divinity & triumphed over The Cross. God never forgets Himself & God never forsakes Himself.
I love your video on Easter. With so much controversy in the world you have given the true meaning of Easter that can mean so much to the world whether one is a believer or not.
The true meaning is the Spring Equinox.
Imagine being so stupid you can’t see how the devil replaced pagan traditions with false Christian traditions like Easter and Christmas
@Sessss; >> Jesus was born to conquer sin and your kind of thinking made obvious by the works of Satan when he refused to “serve”.
@Lot; Spring is the meaning of the Equinox.
Jesus is the meaning of the “Resurrection” which is in Spring, the Resurrection to show that We are “Alive” in Heaven.
Any other smug comments can be referred to the “Douay Rheims” Catholic Bible Commentary.
“I” will truly be glad when the satanist have been routed by the Power of GOD !
Cutting like a two edge sword. Revelation 19:15
Not very loving and forgiving of you. Seems like Christians like you always look forward to everyone who doesn't think and do as they wish being in eternal torment. Then you can live in your gated community without anyone different from yourself. How holy. No doubt you'll be so bored, you'll find fault with your own and make up new, 'divine' punishments for them too. @@JoellHedges-dm1mu
It is a stunning and instructive videos. It is also presented in a warm and respected manner. As a Slovenian I am so proud to be part of these Eastern celebrations. Thank you for all your efforts to give this overall view of this holiday!
Your country looks so beautiful, and your culture seems really sweet. We'd love to visit it one day. So glad you have such nice traditions. Keep them going! God bless you from the USA.
Mr. Steves provides simple explanations with respect to many of the countries that he continues to visit along with their traditions. Just keep on doing a good job, sir.
It is the most joyous of all the high holidays for the Eastern Orthodox. Happy Easter 🕯️☦️
There is no such thing as “high holidays”
You are being lied to by the devil
A truly beautiful and inspirational video. If ever you were to produce a sequel, you could consider visiting Malta. We also have our variant of the semana santa (like nearby Sicily, having been under Spanish rule in the late middle ages). And on Easter Sunday there is a joyful and lively procession with the statue of the risen Christ.
That would be great. I don't think Rick Steeves has ever been to Malta. It seems like a cool country. Best to you all. Happy Easter and Holy Week!
This was wonderful. Thank you, Rick Steves. I'm sharing it with friends and family. Blessed Easter, everyone!🙏🙏🙏
Thank you so many people keeping the faith and traditions.
Thank you so much for including my home country, Slovenia, in this documentary! 🥰😇 Hello from a Slovenian. Wishing a peaceful Easter to everyone, God bless you! ❤
This is a beautiful and inspirational video. we've seen this before, but just loved watching it again this Holy Week. How beautiful these traditions are! I wish we had such Easter/ Holy Week traditions here in America. Well, let's start our own, in our own families and communities. God bless us this Easter and always. Thanks, Rick Steeves!
Thank you for bringing me to Europe. It has made me appreciate more its culture. I am watching from the Philippines.
Happy Easter for all the viewers who enjoy gatherings with friends and family for Spiritual moments! It is the time for all of us to feel grateful for every little moment of Peace and Quiet.
Amazing video
Happy Blessed Easter 2024🙏
Thank you, Rick steves
In Egypt Easter is usually followed by Spring feast on Easter Monday next day since the days of ancient egyptians and one of the very famous food consumption are coloured eggs and smoked salted fish. Happy Easter
Happy Easter to Christian friends from India❤❤❤❤❤
Beautiful program nowadays everything is lost what a shame
What do you mean? How old is this, what is lost and how?
Thank you for not only presenting various cultural traditions - though very interesting, but for beginning the video with the true meaning of Easter... That this is not about spring, special foods, rabbits, chocolate, etc. But about Jesus' sacrifice for all of us and His glorious resurrection!
Happy Easter 🙏. God bless our European brothers and sisters 🙏

This was really wonderful! I wish we still observed community festivals around holy days more in the USA!
We do, we celebrate with our families, friends. Most do not need a large celebration. Small are just holy ✨☮️🙏💖😋🌼🌷🌹🌸🧘🧘🧘♀️
It's very sad that a lot of places require people to work on Easter Sunday. Especially in the USA
This was a marvelous presentation, so well-researched and so informative. I was familiar with some of Easter customs but nowhere near all I learned about by watching this. Bravo!

Growing up in Germany we werent religious. We went to church a few times on base for fun but nothing all the time. My German mother made us Easter baskets filled with German chocolate and candies.
This was a lovely watch. 📺✝️

Hi Rick, the only bit of info that needs a little clarification is when you mentioned that the holy communion catholics receive is symbolic. It is actually not symbolic, but thru the miracle of transubstantiation, the bread and wine, at the words of the priest actually become the body and blood of Jesus. You can look up eucharistic miracles for more proof of this - in addition to John 6. But loved this video!
According to Catholics. Not to most Christians. Please do not generalize and present your mere opinion as fact.
I always wondered what the Eucharist meant to Catholics, thanks for the brief explanation.
@@janetprost1487 It's implicit when he says "the holy communion that CATHOLICS receive".
It's a great social awareness and serenity love this the culture program heartiest respect on wards them the way they living happily .
Thank you for a remarkable job ❤
Thank you Mr. Rick Steve.
Beautiful!!❤❤❤❤❤
So good, thank you Rick
@32:40 The sheer raw passion of impromptu flamenco singing always gets my throat in a knot.
I got tears in my eyes. I loved my visit to Granada, the Alhambra at sunset and the gypsies singing.

Happy Easter to these that celebrate it now! And also in Europe, Orthodox Christians will celebrate it in a month's time!
Wow, that was encouraging. Rick you look healthy.
Easter is Hope.
Awesome as always 🤩
Hello from Philippines
Those songs sang in Sevilla are called "saetas"
Wonderful wonderful video !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a very beautiful video thank you.
Check out Busójárás in Mohács, Hungary (by the Sokác people)! It is somewhat similar to the one featured in this video (Slovenia). But it finishes with a bonfire and the masks of the busós are very cool.
These celebrations are fascinating, especially for us in the USA where we don't have many traditions at all. Maybe someone should film this Hungarian celebration and put it on CZcams. Happy Easter!
Thank you, Rick!
Very good decision, time for sharing traveling tips and organize the Easter holiday, yeah, very good idea indeed
i was with my son and daughter last year in Crete and was jet lagged and we missed there Easter celebration. Maybe another time we will be there again.
Great episode as always, thanks!
A great show!!!
Super enriching. Thanks.
Here in the US we don’t have this kind of activities unlike Europe. We need this kind of commemoration to bring back the solemnity of worship to our Lord Jesus Christ. This kind of conservative worship is so solemn.
Our culture is Protestant, even Puritan. They took out all the rich symbolism and dramatic ritual hundreds of years ago. The US would never have had these celebrations.
Hey...love learning a little about different cultures...especially like learning about the adaptations of pagan festivals by "Christianity"...
Thank you!
thank you rick
We need to truly celebrate and observe. Why have we turned away from our religious traditions? Other countries do not.
Happy Easter 🐰 to All❤❤❤❤❤❤
Epic video ❤
Very good!
Beautiful. Blessings
Great Content 💯♥️
Amen❤
Thanks, Rick.
story hasn't changed much on that side of the world!
Can't wait 🧐
I just seen Rick at rococo steak in fl rn 🤯🤯
Jesus Christ is Lord 👑🕊️❤
great
Jesus ❗️🥰🙏🏽
The scarf is beautiful. Great video! If I don’t win one, please let me know exactly where to get one. Thank you!
Top, like from Amadores
You said it came from the pagan religion before the Christianity celebrating the beginning of spring! Pagan religion of the Romans was called Mithraic a Persian religion and celebrating the beginning of the Spring is called "NowRuz" meaning New Day which is a Persian New Year! Coincident or it has something to do with the Roman and Persian interactions!
💙
hi Rick
Actually Steve, for Catholics communion is the body and blood of Christ. Not a reenactment of the Last supper.
His name is
Rick Steves.
Transubstantiation
Happy easter day everyone who celebrates today... Christ doesn't cross but Judas is then don't be afraid if you are right... Don't cross someone if he or she doesn't has abilities or capabilities to hold that cross... Cross represents responsibility and love to preserve this world better again, and after too... he said "i will always with you until the end of the world"... Preserve this world better again.... Even christ needs love... God Allah only doesn't has soulmate...🌐🎁❤
The lady at 26:17 haha what is her deal
Interesting, colorful, and inspiring .... as far as it goes. But, this should really have been titled "Mediterranean Easter" instead of "European Easter". No mention at all of Easter in Germany, the Scandinavian countries, or the British Isles. No mention of Easter eggs from Poland or Ukraine, which are (in my opinion) the most beautiful in all of Europe. Oh well, one can do only so much in a single hour.
Slovenia is not a Mediterranean country! But Central/ Eastern European, just like Poland and Ukraine. Painted eggs from that entire region - Slovakia, Hungary, etc. are similarly beautiful.
🙏🪷🌳👍🏻🐠✈️🥘🍄
6/10 First Red Hair Christ Depiction I have ever seen
UK Salisbury Cathedral Easter Tradition and Simnel Cake /UK Easter Cake which for some inexplicable reason is only sold by Jewish Marks and Spencer
its 7 weeks , so 49 days .
Why is a Protestant so enthusiastic about the Catholic Easter in Europe?
After all those ceremonies et festive meals, is there's someone who repent of their sins and by reconizing what Jesus did on the cross for them to be saved and not been condamned for eternity! All those traditions, cancelled the Word of God, said Jesus. To be saved you have to be born again, to enter in the Kingdom of God ! Whithout repentance, there is no, new birth et if you are not born again by the Spirit of God, you are not saved !
The cross and the death of Jesus, send us the message of repentance ! This is what each person must understand et do, by receivinbg Jesus as their Savior and their Lord! Amen!
That message you can read it in the Bible ( John 3 verses 1 to 5 ) Amen !
That was a very beautiful video but I am wondering if the Christians in Gaza will be celebrating this Easter? As one of their pastors said-- they have been betrayed by the Christians around the world, especially in the vatican . Also with the Armenian Christians in Jerusalem be able to get back their land from the Jew who stole it?
What happened to you, not naked in 'Europe'.
CHRIST IS RISEN!
Semoga Christianity kembali menjadi agama utama di Eropa. Jangan sampai agama gurun mengganti tradisi indah ini
Meanwhile, in USA and Australia, the biggest chocolate companies are aiming to sell eggs without any mention of Easter. They are called "Hunting eggs" this year.
Great job Rick
