That thing was 26 years old at the time and all the ink is still in place on the keys. I have a Microsoft 4000 keyboard and the ink wore off the keys in less than a year and they don’t sell just the keys. And even trying to find decent decals as a replacement is impossible. Very frustrating that everything nowadays is just meant to be disposable rather than repairable.
Why would anyone want to offer them for sale though? There wouldn't be sufficient market to make it viable in any way. You can get stencils and good paint and apply the lettering yourself, or even make your own stencils and do it that way.
@@Frithgar You seemed to miss the point. The point is that everything made nowadays is junk whereas stuff made 26 years ago was made to last.
@@Killashandra111 you want to look for double shot keys. The lettering isn't silk screened, it's injection moulded with two different plastics so the letter goes all the way through the key. Often with a clear plastic so back lit keyboards shine light through the letter.
You should be able to find replacement double shot keys for your keyboard, just not from the manufacturer
Or invest in a good mechanical double shot back lit keyboard.
I've had the razer blackwidow elite now for several years, it works great.
@@ge2719 I really like the ergonomic split keyboard as it is easier on my wrists. Will most keys fit most boards? Don't need/want backlit but don't want the letters to wear off again.
You should try the Sharkoon Purewrite Keyboard, it is really long lasting for a low price, and it is the flattest mechanical keyboard and the fastest i've ever typed on. It is comparable to a laptop keyboard, noisier yeah, but you have the letters that just shine through, and you have a metal case, every button is changeable the way you want it.
There are many other good mechanical keyboards but none is that flat and has that quality for the price.
Nothing beats the sound of an old Windows keyboard
The nostalgia might be nice, but nothing truly beats a mechanical keyboard
@@CHloE748 IBM Beamspring both older than this board AND Mechanical
Clackety clack

Amen
I love the old school windows branded keyboards with the board nice and space out. There is something very satisfying about tactile loud clicking keys when you type as well.
mechanical keyboards 🥵
Very true
@@yurukiiOWO nothing mechanical about this keyboard! it's a rubber dome membrane keyboard just like every keyboard released today is
@@TheSonicSegaNerd i was responding to the phrase “there is something very satisfying about tactile loud clicking keys when you type.”
Yes!
Never knew before that oxidized plastic can be restored. This is so cool!
Does the keyboard look gold to you? It did to me
As someone who studies old tech i am highly offended and will now angrily use my Windows XP vm
It’s amazing to me how many “broken” things just need a good thorough cleaning

i’m not sure how i found this but i’m glad i did. seeing this keyboard reminds me of elementary school lol 😂
thanks for watching
My parents had one of these when I was growing up and I always loved the clicky sounds. This was very nostalgic 🥰
He bought new plastic cause this haven't forms near up down buttons like old one... Fake! Dislike
I am a child of the 80s whose first computer was a windows 95 computer. This video makes my nostalgic heart happy.
i thought these keyboards where actually supposed to be yellow, this is insane
They were off-white, almost gray/beige when they were new. Either the video is desaturated at the end or the peroxide lightened the plastic too much.
@@veneratedit does look like the camera has some weird saturation issue throughout, so I'd probably lean on that.
I always used to think the grey keys were actually brown as standard until I saw retrobriting. But then again these were the 1990's with grubby college kids and lots of sunlight shining through the windows. The keyboards back then had to take a pounding and were designed as such. Still prefer the feel of Win95 two tone keyboards, they're just better to type on with the key spacing. It's worth buying them for pennies at junk stores and retrobriting them back to new, because the keyboards of today feel flimsy and less robust.
In the 2000s I was a teenager and there weren't cheap keyboard options like today, so I did this job of taking the keyboard apart to wash. It was hard work, but it was worth it. Even the sound of the keys was different. Very nostalgic. 👏👏👏
Very nice! thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! ❤️
The patience is commendable.
thanks for watching❤️
It's pretty crazy that you can make a pretty decent living making flea market level restorations by posting on CZcams. Awesome job
Thanks for watching!
You can make videos of anything and make money, people, especially the new generations will watch anything
What do you mean flea market level? This was a very above average, unneccessary piece of work. The restoration probably cost more than the product.
I think they meant on flea market products - not much demand for a 95 keyboard but lots of people are loving watching the process
I've had the same COMPAQ keyboard for over 2 decades. I usually open it to clean it once every couple years. The worst part is always putting the keys back one by one.
But if you take care of your old keyboard, it will last you your entire life barring accidents. Like every consumer product, they were probably made to be less obsolescent back then.
Thank you, that's exactly the case
L
I bet all the new kids making these $300+ custom keyboards look a little silly to you (ngl creating a bunch does look satisfying).
What really got me was the plastic through which the keys send the presses to the pc
I recently opened a new keyboard and now seeing this one I can see they haven't changed one bit
There are different types of keyboards, and the "Plastic thing" is a PCB I believe. Yes they have changed, they are solid now, not flexible.
My parents had one of these when I was growing up and I always loved the clicky sounds. This was very nostalgic 殺
One week! I wouldn't have the patience for this one. Great stuff.

@@resEG As I've probably said before, you keep doing these bril vids, I'll keep wathing them!. 🙂 Win win!.
he forgot to add a disclaimer
he edited the video to make it a more dramatic before after effect
the after video has been desaturated and lightened to show less obvious yellowing
Was literally going through the comments to see if anyone else noticed lol
Yeah you can tell by the color of his skin. Its much lighter at the end 🤔
@@xMidnighthands he just restored hands too XD
It’s kinda crazy how after 25 years, that keyboard still looks nearly identical to one today.
Ikr, thats insane
Well it makes no sense to change perfection

Yeah unlike mice, keyboards had something to base off of so they kinda had a decent design from the start

I love that Unicomp bought all the 1980s IBM tooling and makes brand new clicky keyboards. They have USB since no modern computer uses any other connector for keyboards. I love how those were built like tanks. I chose a keyboard with Cherry keys because I wanted something illuminated.
WOW! When you showed it after 6 days. Incredible!

The ENTER KEYS with some Others Were of Blue colors also
The OLD Keyboard had CHECKED Design above ARROW KEYS which is not in new one....

I used to wonder if uv damaged plastic can be reversed. And I guess I got my answer now! Nice video.
Glad I could help!
It's called retro brighting its a thing used to somewhat reverse the effects as much as possible

Я всегда думала, что эта клавиатура сама по себе выпускается жёлтой🤣

I actually miss those days.
Not many people had home desktop computers then. I had one. They didn't know what they were missing.
Sometimes I have the impression that these guys find some random old keyboard that turned a tad bit yello but then bury it for 3 weeks in the backyeard for extra effect.
Un trabajo excelente 👌👏👍
it is amazing to see the UV damaged plastic can turn into white!
Thanks for the comment! 👍😊

The final result is actually looking like a gaming keyboard imagine trying to just put in some RGB lights in there as well, would be pretty dope.
Yes I loved the result
You probably can't afford a gaming computer

Hola! ¿Alguien me ayuda? Saludos.
Está mejor que el de mi escuela
Nice got new keyboard!
I subscribed. I have that exact same screwdriver kit. Nice 👍 sounds too.
¡Me fascinó! Con esto me hago la pegunta, ¿necesitamos tantas novedades y actualizaciones? Creo que tenemos más tecnologia de la que necesitamos.
Yes, we need less technology because you’re technically just putting the ecosystem into a shredder that has an output of money.
I think Mr. Krabs will be at my house in a few minutes
@@mackenziemcnaughton, lo que hoy llamamos tecnologia o innovación, no lo es, es una recreación superflua y sólo sirve para esclavizar y mantenernos dentro de la red.
