Is there anyway to depress the calliper without that special tool?

You need the special tool if your piston is rusted. It can be rotated with large screwdriver otherwise. It can be a loaner from autozone. Pay $60 upfront. Use it. Return it and you get your $60 back. Also, he put rear pad back in backwards. The wear indicator pad goes on the inside because that pad has raised bumps that slide into cross on piston that gets rotated back in.
