  • This is my video log, part 1 of a 3 part series about how to create an Olive Bonsai from a nursery material (Dwarf Olive tree topiary). It is kind of a good session for beginners in the Bonsai hobby. It shows the very basic techniques of branch pruning, root pruning and potting. I enjoyed making it.

@Nubster12 I'm new to Bonsai too (only about 6 or 7 months). I tried to style a bird's nest spruce last Fall and ruined the plant. I didn't study the plant well enough before styling it. Got carried away in removing material before I finally realizing the swirling nature of how the branches grow. Now, I have a very strange looking plant which I doubt can be transformed into even a prebonsai. Study the birds nest well before removing material.

I loved your video. It helped me a lot understanding some basics because I'm inexperienced in Bonsai. It was very instructive.
I also like olive trees and I would like to create one olive tree bonsai but I have a question. You already start from a small plant but, did you plant it before yourself? Is it possible to use any part of a real olive tree to grow on a vase? How do I actually start from nothing.
    Thank you

@kissiebooashes Thanks for the advice. I am done with it for now. I didn't prune a whole lot from it and did it over just two days but I'll certainly heed your advice in the future. It's certainly a learning experience to say the least.

Great video as usual. I know this is unrelated but have you ever worked with Bird's Nest Spruce? I just picked on up but not sure how to prune. I am new to bonsai so I am trying to learn.

@gutzboy1 Thanks. I have been looking and pruning for two days now...lol...at this point my goal is to simply open it up some then let it grow and see what happens. I may end up grabbing some junipers from a semi-local bonsai nursery next week for my first serious attempts at some bonsai.

That is perhaps the most beautiful olive tree I have seen. Beautiful leaves, great overall form.
It seems obvious that its dense foliage would indicate an extensive and healthy root system. yes? Is this plant kept indoors or outdoors? What kind of climate is it in?

@Nubster12 First & foremost, stop pruning! Many coniferous shrubs do not do well w/ slow, constant pruning. Most prefer to have 1 large 'insult' per year or 2 [or more] & then spend the rest of the time recovering in partial shade. Also work on them when the weather is still relatively cool & the tree is still in dormancy. Prune, wire, & reduce the roots all in one go & your tree will thank you for it in the future. Take the time now to observe it, become familiar w/ it & develop a plan for it.

@gutzboy1 If it's still alive, it's never too late! Give it a few years to grow as it wants to. Let it grow suckers & throw off as many branches as possible. Just keep it pest free, watered, & happy. While it grows like it wants do some more research on it & keep observing it. Your 'ruined' tree might just surprise you.
