All the Babies and prince things are NOT explained by episode 24, just STRONGLY suggested. They give you the space to make your own speculation.
Its pretty straightforward and it was explained in this episode. Maomao theorized that Ah-Dou is Jinshi's mother and he was swapped at birth because the empress dowagers baby died. Thats why he was crying the previous night, his mother was leaving the rear palace and he wouldn't be seeing her often anymore.
edit- also, since its confused alot of people...the reason Maomao was linked to Fenming is because the idiots who kidnapped her and sold her into servitude in the rear palace were related to Fenming which makes Maomao someone of relation to that disgraced family even if its not an actual familial relation.
She very explicitly did not theorise that Ah-Duo was Jinshi's mother. She theorised that Ah-Duo swapped her baby with the current emperor's little brother. Theorising that Jinshi was said little brother would be ludicrous, as no one would make the _current heir_ (I don't think anyone's mentioned any surviving boy children) to the emperor into a eunuch.

No. The theory is that both babies were swapped when they were alive. Then the lady in waiting accidentally killed the previous emperor’s son.

Jinshi doesn't know he is the emperor's son, he thinks he is his brother, therefore he doesn't know Ah-Duo is his mom, though he is attached to her since she was alway close while he was growing up. On the other hand I'm pretty sure the emperor knows the truth, but i don't know when and how he found out, I just read some random chapters of the latest light novel and I'm missing quite a bit of context.
This comment is a huge spoiler as MaoMao does NOT theorize that AhDuo is Jinshi's mother, the episode hints at this, but it's not explicitly theorized by Maomao.
About the previous emperor:
In those last 2 episode we learn Ah-Duo is 35years old, 1 year older than the current emperor (mistranslation: the are not "foster sibline" they are "milk-sibline", Ah-Duo mother is the lady feeding her milk to the baby-prince/current emperor. Why? Keep reading.)
In episode 6, we see the late emperor dowager/current emperor mom, describe being 45y old. And we remember he(previous emperor) made Lishue (9y old then) his concubine... but died soon after, before "touching" her.

To sum up Maomao's deduction:
There was no death of anyone in childbirth. There was injury and complication to Ah Duo rendering her unable to bear any more children. In the chaos of the issue, and to ensure a better outcome for her "sickly" son, Ah Duo and possibly at least the Doctor (Maomao's euneuch "Father") know about the swap... the circle of who else knows is vanishingly small.
The current emperor's ACTUAL little brother came into Ah Duo's care where he was accidentally killed by Fengming's honey mix shortly after.
Ah Duo's baby (current emperor's ACTUAL Eldest Son) has been raised SINCE BIRTH as the Emperor's little brother.

There are multiple intermingled conspiracies with multiple secrets being held by multiple people. Some of the secrets are True secrets, and some of the Secrets are Lies to hide greater truths that the secret holders don't know any better.

The "Employment Agency" that acquired Maomao to sell to the Rear Palace also does business with Fenming's family, and as a result, are all part of the punitive purge.

With so many names I have my problems to follow the relationships in the palace, even after some rewatches. Could you explain me something, please. Would this imply that the current (time) emperor had his own women while the old emperor was in charge and had women trying to birth? Are the 4 positions reserved only for the emperor of that time?
@@marior.5796 yes The crown prince was allowed to have his own concubines. (AhDuo, his childhood friend and "milk sibling" [shared a wet nurse] first and foremost)
The empress dowager and AhDuo Were both pregnant at the same time And gave birth on the same night.. That is when the baby swap happened.
The rear palace is the entire area of concubines for The emperor, And the four favorites are just The four favorites that have some infrastructure built around them. It could be more. It could be less. It's good to be the king.

Even as far as I am in the manga very little has really been explicitly confirmed by any characters who would know the definitive answer's. Just a lot of convincing evidence put together with solid speculation on MaoMaos part.
LOL at it gets explained. Yes, in the light novel, but not in the first season of the anime. Good news is that this is getting a second season (no guarantees that it gets explained then).
Maomao just surmised that Jinshi looks like Ah-Duo and is likely Ah-Duo's son. He was traded at birth and is actually a prince.

It's been hinted at before that Jinshi's status may be more then just a eunuch and Mao mao's speculation here that Ah-Dou's baby was swapped with the empress' at birth would prove that true as Jinshi would be the prince. His strong resemblance to Ah-Dou all but confirms he is her son and he just had to say goodbye to his mother.
Jinshi is the son of Au do and the current empora (not his brother) he's not a eunuch and as the empors only male child is air to the throne, making him crown prince by default.

The problem is that she blamed herself for the accidental death of the child...
... but she still tried to cover it up with the very intended murder of someone unrelated to it.
And she doesn't seem to feel any guilt for this one. This part loses all sympathy I could have had for her.

Personally throughout the series we don't see a lot of the Emperor but I do like him as a character with what little I've seen.
In regards to your feelings about the unfortunate events with kids in the show. It's important to keep in my one of the big reasons to experience and enjoy such stories is precisely the feelings they invoke.

Jeez this comment section is full of spoilers. What we actually know is what MaoMao theorizes and then dismisses: while looking at Jinshi and Ah-Duo next to each other she thinks that they look so much alike that they could swap and thinking about swaps makes wonder about another swap. She remembers the exact words that Fengming had reported Ah-Duo saying after the death of her child: she had said her child left her, not that he had died and for this reason MaoMao imagines it could be possible that that AhDuo's child, who would be the current emperor's heir and the empress dowager's child, who would be the current emperor's brother, were swapped at birth as that would ensure better care for AhDuo's son. Later the child in Fengming's care died and that child would be the Emperor's brother, not Ah-Duo's child and that would explain why AhDuo stayed as a concubine, despite not liking it and knowing she couldn't have other children, so that she could watch over her son who was being brought up as the emperor's brother. MaoMao also assumes that failure to notice the swap resulted in her father's banishment from court. This is all speculation on her part and some aspects remain unclear, we as the audience can think of this as true and draw even further conclusions, given certain resemblances or dismiss the story. Bear in mind that MaoMao is not objective nor honest, even to herself when it comes to certain topics, but she is very smart.
WE have been given the clues almost since episode one... that the long purple haired dude is now what he seems SPECIALLY the fact that mao mao makes a ton of references to the fact that he is an Eunuch (castrated) because that is the "ONLY" way a man can be inside the place of the Emperor's harem... BUT the fact that mao mao mentions it so much and he is doing things that a mere manager is not supposed to like in the Garden event where he was super dressed up for and mao mao MISSED... and he has too many responsibilities...
This episode SPOON FED us the clues... LUKE please please please work it out... i almost have faith in you... you can probably almost see the thread being dangled infront of you... take it....

It's not a spoilers since it actually indicated what happened... (but later episode would confirm to the viewers but not the characters in the show... although they kinda know... this is why this is a very smart novel, all the characters are intelligent, but the era they are in, it's best to kept quiet.)
As for the baby switching - Jinshi is the crown prince, not the "brother of the prince"
The novel would fill you in (but was somewhat skipped on the anime, I am not sure, I didn't read it.) - but the concubine that left the palace was the current emperor first lover and they have a baby. The same purple hair concubine was actually also an military advisor/officer for the current emperor when he was just a crown prince.
Now lady Ah-Duo (not ADO), because she is just pretty much a lady in waiting and not the queen or offical concubine of the then emperor - any baby that was coming out would consider illegimate and may be a threat to the old emperor line and all the scheming court officials... so that kid, jinshi, life would be at risk as factions will try to murder him then as the baby...
But luck would have it, the old emperor's concubine (the now queens mum that give Jinshi that gold/coral hair pin a few episode back) just have a miscarriage... So the current Ah-Duo give Jinshi away as a replacement baby for the miscarriage - this would keep Jinshi safe from all political opposition.
Ah-Duo doesn't tell the current emperor and the subdue reason that the servant put to death is to keep this secret hidden so other political enemies may not try a revolt over this. The minor spoiler is the current emperor might actually know the whole story, but he doesn't show it or order jinshi to take his place.... and grant his son's freedom without showing affection. (cause that would also be dangerous in the court.)
All imperial family kinda trapped in their role, in many ways, it's a prison sentence - doesn't matter if it's west or east.
This show have a lot of game of thrones type back door politics - and it's all dealing with leaderships - and they all have historical context as people always play the power game with other's people lives as their pawns - even today.
Are you going by some outdated version of someone else’s synopsis? The one thing you got correct is that it’s not spoilers, because most of that is wrong.
