Wonderful.... just like I remember. I had the incredible luck to be a college student in Cleveland in the 1960s. Szell was conductor, Louis Lane was Associate Conductor, and James Levine was Assistant Conductor. My dorm room was 500 feet from Severance Hall! Even better, some generous anonymous alumnus had endowed a full row of balcony seats for students for every Thursday concert: all a student had to do was go to the English Department secretary on Wednesday and ask for a free ticket. I did, often, and got a wonderful enjoyable education in classical music I shall remember always. Sadly, Szell died the day I moved out of Cleveland, but I am so glad his music lives on!

Has there EVER been a live performance of the third movement like the one on this recording? "Cataclysmic" is the word that springs to mind. You can tell at the end of it that the audience is in a state of shock. Would love to have been present at the Blossom Music Center for THAT.

Grosses Geschenk.
    DANKE !

AHA! So THAT's how it goes!! NOW I understand, that this isn't a morbid and increasingly self-pitying piece at all, but a very original and well-constructed symphony. Almost incredible.

The stormy section starting about midway through the 1st movement.... 😍😍😍🔥🔥🔥 The tempo is PERFECT. Too many orchestras play it too fast -- makes it feel frantic and rushed. Maestro Szell's tempo gives all the drama and passion, along with propulsion and precision. The rest of the work is brilliantly interpreted and executed. Bravissimo to the Maestro and all the players!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Not just another Pathetique. Appreciate much this middle section. The same Tchaikovsky composed Pique Dame and I personnally feel something of the fantastic, malevolent accents of the confrontation between the Countess and Hermann here.

I been waiting for the day I found one of Szell and Cleveland performances of a Tchaikovsky symphony. I've heard recordings of Szell and Cleveland performing Beethoven, Mozart , and Haydn before, but never Tchaikovsky. I know Szell wasn't a big Tchaikovsky guy, and really focused on Beethoven and Mozart. Nevertheless, it still is nice to hear a performance of Szell and Cleveland playing Tchaikovsky.

Wow! I check periodically on CZcams for live Szell recordings, and I was overjoyed to see this one. Until about 10 years ago I had a number of live recordings gathered from Tom Patronite, one-time editor of the Thomas Beecham Society's magazine, who lived in Cleveland and did many open-reel recordings of Szell-era radio broadcasts. Until my copies were ruined by a basement flood, I had this performance on tape-- and many others, including a wonderful Brahms German Requiem and marvelous Beethoven 7th from a concert in Boston. Those, alas, were not recoverable, despite many attempts. I have several of those Patronite recordings still-- the last performance of the Eroica before Szell's death in 1970, for example. But getting this Pathetique is special. Thank you!!! Anyone else who knows sources of live Szell performances, I'd love to hear from you.

I think Szell wasn't a fan of Rachmaninoff's music, yet a recording of the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with Leon Fleisher is the most wonderfully realized, revelatory performance of the piece I have ever heard. This speaks of the rarest caliber of artist.

As someone who's played this work before, the applause is a bit of a welcome break, a chance to take a breather before plunging back into the trenches for that final movement... The 3rd movement is hard to play (I'm a cellist) -- lots of triplets and accidentals and at a tempo of 145+ bpm -- and Maestro Szell's tempo was very gracious -- I've heard some played faster... INSANITY! 😱😱 so after playing those final chords of that movement, that applause let me catch my breath, relax my fingers for a few seconds, then refocus for the last movement. .

Tempo of the first movement was a bit too fast for my taste. When it's slower, you get a bit more emotion & the brass didn't get enough time to hold their notes because of this. I don't know the music terminology to back this up, I can only explain what I hear, but this is a cool recording nevertheless. The LoFi feel gives it a cozy sound

To my personal sensibility this speed reaches me more directly --- it seems to tap into the terror in a way slower tempos like those used by Reiner and Karajan never quite do for me. The incisiveness is a different kind of pathos; it's nice to have both!
