Because WayV -- which stands for We Are Your Vision in English -- or Weishen V in Chinese -- which means "gods of vision" -- is a sub-unit of NCT, NCT's whole dream concept is also part of WayV's storyline and concept. (Hence, why in the lyrics of "Phantom" they say "only I can see the truth," and they talk about having the vision, etc.) As with everything NCT does, it all has to do with dreams, dreaming or something to do with being in a dream state. Plus, they are thought to be gods who have a vision for the past, present and future. Some fans who are into SM group theories have also speculated that WayV's storyline also connects to EXO's and SuperM's storylines.
For example, in their "Phantom" MV we see the red moon or planet with YangYang holding up the moon, which I think is also probably connected in some way to the fact that in WayV's "Moonwalk" lyrics they talk about taking over the moon. And it's also probably connected to WayV's other MVs, as well as EXO's and SuperM's storyline, because everything EXO does is also connected to the moon, other worlds and other dimensions, etc. It's all part of the SM Culture Universe.
Although WayV's "Phantom" MV is loosely based on the concept of the Phantom of the Opera, a phantom is just another name for a ghost or apparition, so I really think the song is about a phantom in general, not specifically the phantom that haunts the opera house. I think the song is more about the image of someone or something that haunts your thoughts or memories, etc. that seems to be affecting or controlling all aspects of your life, manipulating you like a puppet on a string.
Currently, there are 6 members in WayV: Ten debuted first as a member of NCT-U and he is also a member of SuperM; Winwin first debuted as a member of NCT-127 and NCT-U, and Kun -- the leader of WayV -- originally debuted as part of NCT-2018; and Xiaojun, Hendery and Yanyang debuted specifically as members of WayV at the beginning of 2019 when WayV was formed.
    > Kun -- the one with the red hair -- is the oldest who is 27. He is a lead vocalist.
    > Ten -- the guy with the mullet hairstyle -- is 27 and he is Thai, but his grandparents are Chinese and he attended an international school in Thailand where they spoke English most of the time, so he is fluent in English. (He is the NCT member who is fluent in the most languages -- on top of being fluent in Thai, English, Korean and Mandarin, he is also learning Japanese); he is a main dancer, lead vocalist and a center of WayV. He is also the NCT member with the most solo songs.
    > WinWin -- the one with the deep voice who throws the knife at the heart -- is 25 years old and he is a lead vocalist, lead dancer and sub-rapper. (He is trained in traditional Chinese dance and attended one of the most prestigious dance academies in China. He was also admitted to a very important dance program at University -- similar to the Chinese equivalent of Julliard.)
    > Xiaojun -- the guy with the gray hair -- is 23 and he is the main vocalist and the one with the high notes most of the time.
    > Hendery -- the one with the crazy eyes -- is 23 and he is from Macau China, so he also speaks Cantonese; he is a lead vocalist and lead rapper.
    > Yangyang -- the blond -- is the youngest at 22 years old. He is Taiwanese, but he lived in Germany for a while and attended an international school, so he is also fluent in English and proficient in German; he is the main rapper.
The only reason why WayV doesn't have NCT in their name like the other 3 NCT sub-units is because, at the time of their debut, there was a lot of political issues between Korea and China, and because of that Korean companies were not able to work in China. NCT's Chinese sub-unit has been going to debut for years, but with all the political issues it took SM Entertainment a long time to find a way to work around all the rules the Chinese government put in place to prevent its native Chinese citizens from working with anyone associated with Korea and preventing anyone who was working with a Korean company from working in China.
So in order to circumvent some of China's restrictions, SM found/created a Chinese company that was willing to take on NCT's Chinese sub-unit, but also allow SM to have a say in the group's concept and promotion activities. Part of how they get around the rules is they gave the group a name that distances them from their Korean roots. (That is also why WayV's Chinese fans are called WayZenNi instead of NCTzens and why WayV has their own lightstick design that is different than NCT's, etc.) The company WayV is under is called Label V which is part of SM, but separate from the Korean branch of the company and it produces songs in Mandarin to keep the Chinese government happy. All the members of WayV also speak Mandarin and have some connection to Chinese heritage, but most of the members are not native mainland Chinese citizens, so this gives them some immunity from the Chinese government. But they are representing China and they are promoting Chinese culture, so the Chinese government kind of turned a blind eye to the fact that they are technically still under a Korean company, as long as they hid any connection to their Korean company while doing promotions in China.
As you can see, not only do the WayV members speak, Mandarin, Korean and English, but they are a very international group that speaks many languages.
So, pretty much all of WayV's songs are in Mandarin with a few English lyrics and words mixed in. (Except when it's an English version, such as "Bad Alive" or their all English version of "Love Talk," or their English song "Miracle", or if you happen to pick the Korean version of some of their songs.) LOL
Because WayV is the Chinese unit, but they are releasing music in Korea and promoting in Korea, not specifically in China, SM is more likely to produce their songs in English. Hence, why several of WayV's previous songs are English songs, because -- due to the pandemic and political issues, etc. -- they aren't promoting as a group in China right now. I think it helps SM avoid any crossover issues with Korea that might make it more difficult for them to promote in China in the future.
You should now check out one of WayV's live performances of "Phantom" because the song and choreography is even better when you see and hear it live. (If you watch their MCountdown comeback stage, or any of their recent performances when they were promoting in Thailand, you will even get to hear the English version of the song.) And you definitely need to check out the dance practice. Out of all of NCT's sub-units, WayV is particularly known for their synchronization and their impressive dances.

Oh that makes sense why they don’t have as many contents and promotions as the other units. I knew the political tension was a thing but didn’t realize how much they were jumping through hoops behind the scenes to make WayV happen at all. Thanks for the back story!

Yay! WayV! I am always here for some NCT. WayV is NCT's Chinese subunit although members are from all over - Macau, Hong Kong, Thailand and Taiwan as well as mainland China. They definitely have a vibe all their own but seem to be promoted less than other NCT units which is a shame. I think they are brilliant.
Sad note - one of the WayV members from SuperM, Lucas, just announced yesterday he has left NCT and WayV and I would imagine SuperM as well? He was not in this video either. He has unfortunately been embroiled in a so called scandal based on his personal life. A few girls accused him of cheating and lying about it. Kid was like 20 when this happened. And after two years of hiatus has announced he will leave the group. I'm so not convinced this is actually a scandal, if everyone's career was ruined based on dating mistakes they made in their early 20s we'd all be unemployed, but what can we do in this kpop industry where even Chen can be blacklisted for getting married and starting a family? 🙄Hope to see Lucas solo someday.
The other member from SuperM is Ten, from Thailand, and his solo work is amazing. You should definitely check out his song Birthday. He is probably one of the top two or three dancers in all of SM. He dances like he has no bones and he is also one of the high note vocalists of WayV, NCT and SuperM. I think he could be the next Taemin so it's cool they're group mates in SuperM.
But your high note in this particular song (and all WayV songs) is Xiaojun. His singing reminds me a lot of Jonghyun, mainly based on his appearance on Lee Mujin's Service where he covered Jonghyun's End of a Day so beautifully as well as an impressive Celine Dion cover. Like how many men can cover a Celine Dion song?!

Anyway, WayV does not get the attention that other NCT units do but they absolutely deserve to get more. I particularly love Moonwalk. Also SM's EDM label ScreaM records did an incredible remix of Phantom I regularly listen to on repeat.

Now you've listened to all three NCT fixed subunits and see how different they all are, you should check out NCT U where they mix and match members from all three units and pick the members best suited to the song, there are some great collaborations there. Two of the best NCT U songs are the 7th Sense which was NCTs debut song before any sub units were announced and Baby Don't Stop which is an incredible dance duet with Ten and Taeyong, both members of SuperM.

    • @Killdeer25
      @Killdeer25  Před rokem +1

I can't believe this a subunit, and of all NCT? I Wasn't expecting that at all, usually the name is still in the subunits name as well.
Yeah I think that's ridiculous that idols can get in trouble for dating, are you freaking serious?
Oh yeah! I do remember Ten, him and Lucas worked well together, that's too bad again. I do wanna check out this guy covering Celine Dion, I don't think I've ever heard a guy cover her music unironically

@@Killdeer25 In NCT the subunits function more as groups because NCT is more of an artist collective than a group. It's not like other groups where their main gig is NCT and the subunit is their side project. Their unit is their main gig (except Mark and Haechan are in both 127 and Dream so they essentially work two main gigs) and the NCT U songs and all member songs are the side projects.
NCT's original concept of continuously adding new members and units has been scrapped. There are three more SM Rookies (SM Rookies are trainees that SM have decided will for sure debut, but are still waiting for groups to be chosen/created for them) who will debut with NCT this year and create a new unit with two existing members who haven't been assigned to a fixed unit yet due to Covid happening right when they debuted. They will be the final NCT members added making 25 total members with Lucas leaving.
What we can probably expect now, is a lot more mixing and matching of existing members with NCT U and new units. They recently created a new unit out of three 127 members (Doyoung, Jaehyun and Junwoo) called NCT DoJaeJung. They released a mini album a couple of weeks ago but I am not sure if they will be a permanent unit or if this is a one album collaboration. But this is the kind of thing I think they will do more of going forward. It's pretty cool.

They usually use a lot of strings/chorus/classical in their music, this epic/tragic...ness vibe has always an important part in the song (especially with "Try my luck", oh god what an intro). With their new album, bc the theme is "phantom of the opera" they accentuate it.
That's why I like to introduce them as I read once in a comment video: WayV is the magical subunit of NCT
Hope you can do more reactions to them, they don't disappoint!!

OOh a big claim Aaron, WayV are great, they are NCT boys after-all. I also concur with your vampire movie idea hahaha. My only problem is I always feel that Mandarin doesn't flow off the tongue or blend the way the Korean language does (also was never too gone when our EXO would do a version of their songs in Mandarin either because of what I just mentioned, but again its EXO so I not complaining, just my silly opinion.) I am obsessed with their song Action Figure, it just stays in your head and the choreography is mighty as we say over here. Looking forward to more WayV and of course, NCT
