  • I like batteries. And I like screens. So how about a battery with a screen? Now we're talkin'! But seriously, though - Is this thing any good? Let's find out!
    The VG-99 battery is not only a v-mount battery, but it also has USB-C Power Delivery (PD), USB A, D-Tap, and a variety of highly compatible charging and discharging specifications to match just about any device you want to throw at it. I'd recommend against throwing It at any of your devices, as it's Quite heavy.

    Update: I'm likely 15 charge cycles in now and I just measured a full charge at 108Wh, which accounting for efficiency losses, lands us at a total capacity very close to 100Wh still!

    I’d love some more battery and power in general content 🔥

  • @flashforum939
    @flashforum939 Před 2 lety +5

    There is actually not a lot of good content on batteries - both for high power draw applications like lights or for something less requiring like camera rigs.
    I have used the FXLIONs for a while and am very satisfied - but as a fellow nerd on this topic I would love to see some quality content.

    • @WesPerry
      @WesPerry  Před 2 lety +1

      The issue I have with other battery coverage is they’ll charge them once and write their review, which is quite unhelpful.
      Meanwhile I’m getting emails daily from battery manufacturers insisting I publish immediately, not accepting the explanation that actually running it through cycles is necessary 🤦🏻‍♂️

    • @flashforum939
      @flashforum939 Před 2 lety

      @@WesPerry The need for publishing fast makes little sense. Batteries are not (typically) hyped tech gadgets that are on an annual renewal cycle so the urgency should be low. But maybe they(the marketing rep) just want a quick turnaround time or maybe the battery performance degrade after 5-10 cycles and they want to avoid bad reviews.
      I assume that’s why many reviewers buy products out of their own pocket to avoid any conflict of interest.
      As for the interest in the topic I think there is a fair interest in the content even if it is a niche topic. Could be original Sony/Canon/Nikon batteries vs other options, V mount batteries, NPF, etc. I also expect this is a type of content that will not get a huge amount of views the first few days but that it will be steady over time when people seek out content when they are researching prior to a purchase.
      Btw. I watched some of the battery reviews by “Project Farm” - they are very objective and scientific + he has a few that are long term reviews. Check him out 👍🏻

    Measuring incoming and outgoing power this way is useless: cells are (unfortunately) not linear power supplies that just drain twice as fast when you double the current. Their capacity is always rated at a certain current where they will hit the specced capacity, but when you go over that set current, they will be drained before you have used the stated capacity. That's just how the cells work and what you can't beat.
    Secondly, to get the numbers right, you should use a dedicated measuring device. Those small USB-measuring thingies are only indicators and can deviate a lot, where a real meter is far more accurate.
    Thirdly: take time between draining and charging. When I recelled my V-mounts, I had to find out out how to reset the gas gauge inside. Those chips are incredibly complex pieces of technology and I won't say I know everything about mine after nine months of self-study, but I can say I do know a lot by now. One of the most important things for the most accurate state of charge indication is letting it rest for 2 hours after charging before you use it and also let it rest for 5 hours after use (draining). This way the electronics inside can do a more accurate reading of state-of-charge, which could get your numbers closer together.
    But don't forget that you are charging it with a completely different power supply: charging it with 20 Volts means there's an onboard charging controller that converts down to the max 16,8 Volt of the four lithium cells in series. Considering a rather industry-standard 85 to 90 procent efficiency for such converters, it's logical where your numbers come from. Drain them with a high drain device like a light and they won't reach their stated capacity, charge them with a higher voltage will cause losses in the converter. Lithium-cells have an incredibly high efficiency of something like 98 %, so the losses in the converter make up a very big part of the difference in capacity used and when fully charged.

    I just bought a Sony a7 IV in July. I'm looking for a better battery solution. I have some friends recommended me Moman power 99 v mount battery, what do you think?

    • @WesPerry
      @WesPerry  Před rokem

      Moman is supposed to be updating their 99 soon to include the usb c features of their newer power 140. I wouldn’t get a v mount without usb c charging (both in and out) these days. Additionally, if you’re powering just a camera off this battery, the power gauge is going to be quite accurate through most of the range, which is a lot more convenient than the 4 dots on the Moman.
      Now I’m not saying This battery is the be all and end all, but I am saying the Moman 99 is an older design that I’d look past.

  • @NewYorkerPEACE
    @NewYorkerPEACE Před rokem

    The percentage indicator is one of the most important features I'm looking for and usbs c. Could you recommend av-mount 99 battery that does it better?

    • @WesPerry
      @WesPerry  Před rokem

      I don’t personally know of any. Measuring battery percentage under high load is an incredibly tricky thing. One would either need to employ some sort of algorithm that fakes percentage accuracy based on load (but isn’t Actually accurate, but Potentially is more accurate), or you just accept how it bogs down the voltage and percentage and adjust monitoring accordingly.

    • @WesPerry
      @WesPerry  Před rokem

      I’m currently testing a Moman battery with usb c and such but no percentage, so as mentioned in this video, you trade a more “apparently” stable battery level for less information.

      @@WesPerry ok so no battery system is good at measuring decent percentages. which one do like the most out of the Zggcine, Came-TV Mini V Mount Battery 99Wh or moman? thanks for getting back

    • @WesPerry
      @WesPerry  Před rokem

      Unfortunately I haven’t tested all of these batteries, so I can’t give a personal recommendation. The moman seems pretty solid, though.
      In retrospect I wish I had given this battery a harder time about not making great use of the screen. There’s so much more they could be showing on such a nice little screen…

    • @WesPerry

      Most batteries and power supplies exhibit higher than nominal voltage until the load is applied, to compensate for that dragging it down.
