I guess it's weird, but I rarely watch videos about this stuff🤷🏻♂️. I guess I would need to know more about the context. You could transpose the sample itself during a sequence, right? All the trigs of the sequence are relative to that, so I guess Function + Tune (or Pitch) or whatever it's called? But that's just 1 track. For all tracks? Idk, something down in the Utility menu? Something weird like sequencing the M:S from it's own midi tracks? Something through the LFO or pad schemes? Anyway, it's a box that always seems to have more to delve into! Thanks for the comment😀!

Interesting. Just ordered the :samples and the Minibrute 2S after 2 weeks of diving into youtube videos about synths. I have no idea what awaits me but i am sitting on hot bricks here.
Well, I feel like you have a lot in store for you when they arrive. Best advice I can give is to make sure your Samples is fully updated. The Elektron Transfer application (as seen in this video for sample handling) makes it pretty easy to update, if needed. The latest update gives nice features, particularly "velocity modulation" which allow variations in pad strikes to do something like change playback speed. While the Model:Cycles is quite different, in the "head", the "body" is basically identical - and there are 5 Cycles videos on this channel (with maybe the one on sequencing being the most relevant?). Anyway, as for your Minibrute? I can only assume it's great. I have a Microbrute - such solid build quality and design, wonderful sound. I assume you will be able to send the Samples sound through the Arturia, maybe mono only, but that could be nice. PS I also did a Samples video on looping that might be of interest. Enjoy your new gear👍🏻!
@@undulations Thank you for the info, i`ll check it out after football. Thats one thing i am hoping for. Being able to send processed samples into the MiniBrute circuit. But even if this doesnt work out well, i`m just starting to see more possibilities. I first thought of the model samples as a beat machine, also considered the Volca sample, but i think the elektron is a bit more advanced and there might also be issues with the volca regarding sample transfer with no USB. Was also thinking about buying the Digitakt only but the magic of the Minibrute cought me stronger. Overall i was amazed by the amount of hardware there is available now, really a tough choice when having your wallet in mind also. Have a good one

I've been loving all your videos, your channel is squarely on my 'CZcams Gold' list! Please make more videos with the Model:Samples, you bring a unique perspective to the instrument, I've learned a lot from this playlist. I now play it as half synth and half drum machine, largely thanks to you! To give you a specific suggestion/prompt - use one track on the Model:Samples or Model:Cycles to send MIDI to the NTS-1! I've dabbled with that, as well as sending MIDI to Volcas. Works very, very well, especially with monophonic synths.

Great video. My interest in the Model: Samples has been re-ignited by the recent announcement of the Model: Cycles. I guess the workflow on each is much the same? But the Samples is looking more interesting again now. Might be time to buy my first Elektron device ;-)

I do think the workflows are probably similar, particularly the sequencing, fx, and lfo’s, but I’m intrigued about the whole FM part. I figure, after the Digitone, that Elektron has a good idea about what to include and what to leave out. But, as for Model:Samples, I still feel like it’s a really solid piece of gear👍🏻!
@@undulations I was interested in the Model: Samples when it first appeared. The Cycles has re-ignited my interest. I'm thinking the Samples would ultimately be more interesting with sample loading ability, as your demo brilliantly demonstrates. Saying that, I was completely blown away by the short Richard Devine demos of the Cycles he posted up on Instagram. Amazing. So not sure which to go for now. Maybe if I can get a good priced, 2nd hand Samples this will sway me towards one.

okay, so... firstly, I'm so jazzed-up about granular synthesis!! somebody should give me a drug test 'cause the stuff gets me feeling, like, spiritual or somethin'... for real. secondly, i recently got myself the model:samples 'cause it, too, gives me jazz hands. when i saw this vid talking about granular synthesis by way of this device... oh, man... somebody give me that drug test STAT!! okay,so... lastly--& most certainly not leastly--man... mister undulations... this video, man... well, i just can't say "thank you" enough for this. so, I'm only gonna say that a few times here, but i am gonna regale you with an onslaught of compliments real quick... first off, the level of creativity in this lesson... kicking it off with that incredible little method with the hand recorder through the hole in the plate, with the stereo ping pong ball action... that's pure gold, man!! better than gold... what was the stuff in wakanda called again...? i forget now. incrediblanium? no, it wasn't that. but it shoulda been, dangit!! anyway... pearls, man... brilliant stuff!! thank you for that. walking us through the audacity process like that. & then the same clear & patient approach taken throughout the process with setting up the model:samples... so clear & thorough. i tend to be left with so many holes in my understanding of processes & things after watching tutorial vids. but not here. I'm just flabbergasted & grateful for all that. so insightful, so helpful. wow!! unparalleled. truly. thank you for all of that. there is one question I'm left with, though... how'd you make that little chart with where the all grains line up with the start time parameter dial? You're welcome! This is the sort of reply that makes it worth doing. I really appreciate you taking the time to express your reaction to it. Now, as for how I made the chart with the grain starts? I just went through beforehand and poked around, found the right values. That said, you've got to be careful not to make your grain file _too_ big, because then you don't have the resolution to really fine-tune where you start on the grains. Then, of course, if you make the grain file too small you might not have as many different sounds as you might want (but the addition of "sample-locking" after this video can make this less of an issue, I think, also make sure to update and get "velocity dependent modulation", where the pad strike intensity can be used to change parameters). And lastly: I think it's vibranium? I think that's what Captain America's shield is made out of. There's also adamantium (Wolverine's skeleton and claws), but I don't think that was a Wakanda thing. Yes! Also, some big updates since I did this video. For one, you can use the pad velocity to control other parameters (like start position or such). Hi, just got this machine as my first sequencer and one of the first things I thought when I learned that the memory was limited was whether using a clip with many small sounds and the sample start/length to zoom in on each sound would effectively give you multiple sounds per track. Lo and behold there is a name for it called granular synthesis! Thank you for the introduction. Is this different from using the osc samples and the loop/lfo to create synth sounds? Also does the new sample lock feature make this easier to do without having to fiddle with the sample start/length? I will definitely stay tuned for more videos.
Well, I'd say that you are correct that looping the osc samples is probably technically a type of granular synthesis, even though the usage can be quite different. I agree that the new sample locking gives a different way to approach things, but I do still like the method in the video because it doesn't tie up sample slots and allows mixing adjacent grains. Overall, I'd say that sample locking combined with multiple grains per sample would really open up a path to a lot of variety. Your comment has given me some ideas for the next Model:Samples video. great video :) Also some useful tips on audacity. At 10:33 you showing the sheet with the start points of the grains. How did you figure out the start points? Just by fiddling with the sample start position? Or is there a way of knowing which number of the start position matches which time on your sample?
distorson Hey, thank you! Yes, in this case I did it just by fiddling. I’ve never really tried it, but I’m pretty sure the 0-127 start settings are linear within the sample on the M:S. So, by using a fixed sample “grid” in Audacity you could probably do something like have samples start at start values of 0, 10, 20, etc. on the M:S - the actual sounds being evenly spaced, but not necessarily having to be the same size. One thing to look out for is that if we put too many sounds in a sample then we might lose fine control over the loop _length_ and hence the granular “pitch” in this sort of setup. But the upside of that would be being able to blend a bunch of neighboring sounds together. Anyway, thanks for checking it out👍🏻!

So you got all those grains from recording the ping pong ball on the plate? Did you have to manipulate the sounds? I'd really like to do something like this; very cool!
Well, I think I did use the ping pong sounds for one grain, but I also used the tick of a grandfather clock, and quite a few other grains that I created in Audacity. Thanks for checking it out👍🏻!
Thanks for checking it out! As I recall, it was a lot of cutting and pasting. I used a few recorded samples but also used the built-in generation features in Audacity for some chirps and noise I think. I may have done some symmetric stuff by copying and reversing stuff. For example, if you have a kickdrum transient you can cut that at the first peak, copy from there to the tail, reverse the copy, and then put that in front of the original. It will be symmetric (and sound kind of like an underwater thud). Hope this helps!

I really appreciate the feedback and support🙏🏼! Yes, I do think something like that should be possible. With the 10 parts I feel like there would be room to have some similar (but not identical samples), then sequencing, and especially motion sequencing🤔 - It just seems like a ton of automation, plus even being able to turn knobs live, seems like some sort of equivalent to a random LFO would be possible. I STILL want to do a video about granular stuff on the Volca Sample 2; I hadn't planned on including any sort of attempt at quasi-synchronous stuff but that could be cool - Do let me know how it goes if you try it out!
Have you considered Clouds by Mutable Instruments in a small rack (it's no longer being produced but clones are available)? With CV you can really push the randomness and density.
Well, first of all, I'm a big fan of Mutable Instruments - I've got Plaits and also Branches, both so nice - and I really like how they open source their designs - so I get a little of their modules in my Arturia MicroFreak and even my Polyphonic Whale (I think Braids and a mini Clouds, respectively). But I think you're right - I should look for a used/cloned Clouds module👍🏻. But since this video I've done some granular in SpaceCraft (on iOS and also as an Ableton plug-in), which I like quite a bit, and I've also gotten a Bastl MicroGranny - which seems pretty limited but is still pretty fun - I'm making a video on that right now (and also revisit using the Model:Samples for granular, knowing a little more and after some firmware upgrades). Just thought I'd mention Clouds because it's amazing for one, and pretty simple to get the desired effect. I guess you've definitely given that some thought considering the gear list. thanks, another fascinating exploration, well broken down and easy to follow, jeez, even i can understand it! i'm trying to do something similar with the volca sample and it isn't exactly ideal. based on your experience (microgranny etc), would you recommend the model samples to do decent granular processing? looking to upgrade my volca sample and figure i would get a good drum machine (love those chance settings) and perhaps a fairly decent granular synth for ~$400 cdn. i also have a eurorack set up and the only thing i've seen in my budget is a clouds knock off or the nebulae. i really enjoyed the hands-on audacity grain creation and can't really see how i could get this level of accuracy (grain selection) on clouds or nebulae easily. keep on trucking ...
Well, I think the Model:Samples has a ton of depth for doing granular. 6 tracks, built-in reverb and delay, sample start/length that can be automated a variery of ways, track-based panning, etc. As I mentioned at the end of the MicroGranny video, I'm definitely planning to do a another granular video about the Model:Samples - but more in line with the stuff I've done on the MG and in SpaceCraft. Plus, as you say, it's also a nice groovebox/drum machine for other (or hybrid uses). You still need a computer for sample transfers, but that's quite an easy setup, and I feel like not having resampling (like Digitakt) is less of an issue for granular uses. A lot of it comes down to samples sizes, choosing the length for what you're up to, and sample-locking was added right after I made this video - seems even more flexible with that. @@undulations thanks for the advice! consulted the Roads book re granulation parameters (pg 188) and it seems the Samples only real lack comes in envelope manipulation (shame they declined to add an attack knob). i believe there may be something in the lfo menu but then, apparently you lose the lfo functionality? (only did a quick reading of the manual) i don't quite understand the spatial position parameter but it looks almost like the grains are being piled vertically/polyphonically as well especially in videos with the gr-1 where the LED graphics are very helpful for me to understand exactly what is going on.
@@rainerd9890 This hits right at the core of "true" granular as described in the Roads book and more-or-less in the spirit of Xenakis. It can take some very different processing compared to a typical sampler, as-such. Custom code, advanced daw plug-ins, some modular - they go in that direction. And this video was really me trying to find what I could do - within the classic sense of granular - on the Samples, and the quasi-synchronous version seemed like it fit the gear. BUT, there is a whole other style of granular that's more akin to sample mangling and chopping, etc. Something like SpaceCraft sort of tends to be some of both types, but simplified in terms of polyphony and spatialization. And, I mean, the MicroGranny is monophonic and monaural. So it's a wide field, I guess. You're right about the attack - I think from the groovebox perspective it can be solved by putting the attack in the sample. I did the LFO thing on the Model:Cycles for an IG post, and it does use it up. But, I think - based on doing this video which was a while ago- the Samples does do some sort of smoothing at the "grain" level (which we have no control over). You just don't hear the clicks and pops like you do on the MicroGranny. I keep wishing Korg would make a Volca Granular of some sort🤔.

Jason Wells It doesn’t really do any sort of automated locating, trimming, etc. It all depends on the sample itself and parameters you dial in (by knob, parameter locking, LFO, etc.). I avoid samples that are too big because it limits your resolution for setting start location.
which first sampler/drummachine could you recommend for a guitar player who wants something user-friendly and is looking for sounds that are rather analog sounding, like a real drumkit, but also things more like household items and cans and bottles and so on (think Michael blair’s twisted kit for EZdrummer), maybe even venture in some trip hop sounds. Not really to make complete songs, but rather some backing/jam tracks. So, I was thinking: standalone (tried software, but I prefer an instrument), easy to use, analog sounding (hence maybe a sampler could be better?), not to expensive, say 200 or 300€. Maybe later on even add a Yamaha reface CP. This models:samples looks nice, but I also thought about the novation circuit or korg elektribe…and probably a lot out there I haven’t encountered. Any help is appreciated. take care.
Hey, sorry it took so long to answer. I really feel like the Model:Samples would be a great choice, but also a huge fan of the Electribe style and sound (but I don't have one). The Circuit (which I do have) is cool, but I don't really think of it for natural drum sounds. The Model:Samples comes with nice kit sounds and it's very easy to add more via usb to a laptop or such. It has a really nice sequencer and some built-in effects. I have the other video (lo-fi loops) that might give a better idea about normal use. Then, I did like 5 Model:Cycles videos - definitely not for natural drum sounds - BUT a lot of the stuff about the sequencer and fx is basically the same. Best of luck!
I feel like that's a totally valid point to make. I guess the easiest answer is that this is for somebody that _already_ has a Model:Samples - something different that they can do with their groovebox. But I also feel like hardware tends to guide the user, give a subset of choices compared to a DAW - so while I probably could duplicate this in Live (or another DAW) by using a similarly mapped MIDI controller - I probably would have done something different. That said, I do really enjoy granular synthesis in a DAW, particularly with the SpaceCraft plug-in and using the MidiFighter Twister as the controller (I did a Delta Waves video on this channel using that setup). Well, I feel like I could help, at least give you some things to consider, but first some questions: - any thoughts about how much you'd want to spend. just roughly, like under $100, under $200, etc. - what kind of music/sounds do you like, or even better, what kind of music/sounds do you think you might like to explore? (former may not be the same as latter) so, specifics like beats-based music vs more freeform ambient would be good to know. also if you want any vocals of any sort (not necessarily your own, maybe samples). - do you feel musical, technical, exploratory, etc? definitely no requirements, but it might suggest where to start. - do you have a laptop, pc, solid smartphone, tablet? (some gear needs to update, interface, etc. and there are a lot of useful apps). lmk and I will be able to have a pretty reasonable idea of suggestions.
@@moorechez67 Well, that much gives a lot of options. If you want to go the "beatmaking" route then you could get a Roland SP 404 Mark 2, which many people swear by as a all-in-one system. If you wanted to do more experimental modular synthesis things then you could get a Make Noise Music 0-Coast synth and an Arturia Keystep keyboard or a Korg SQ-1 sequencer to control the synth. If you want more of a middle route then getting two (or more) things would work. Maybe an Arturia MicroFreak for many synth sounds, combined with a Korg Volca Drum for beats. Bear in mind that as soon as you have two (or more) it's common to need more things (cables, mixer) to be able to sync them up and combine the sounds. Lastly, one way to start would be to get the instrument shown in this video, the Elektron Model:Samples, and see how it goes. It can do so much. Ships with built-in samples, pretty easy to add more by a laptop usb. You can do synth stuff with it, you can have vocal samples, a really broad range of choices. (This video is kind of a super specific niche use if the Model:Samples, looking at Elektron's videos or a ton of clips on Instagram would give a better idea). If you want more synth sounds and beats then maybe the Elektron Model:Cycles would work (I have a bunch of videos on here about that box). Best of luck with it all!

I ask because apparently I made a wrong investment with my volcas when I was able to raise a little more money and buy something between the volcas and digitakt In many of the forums they comment that volcas is not a serious or durable instrument. I am not a professional musician, I am looking for something for my homestudio, something that is of better quality. I already have 5 volcas 1 bsp and a 1 novation launchkey mini mk3 , so what do you recommend? I think of model, novation, moog minitaur. TNX
Hey, thank you very much for the feedback! First thing - if you haven't seen it, you might be interested in the first video of my Model:Cycles series. I talked a lot at the beginning about how the Model:Cycles, Model:Samples, Digitone, and Digitakt fit together as products. I haven't used my Circuit enough to really say for sure, but it seems like a really nice instrument for the price. As for Volcas - I get that some people don't see them as serious instruments, BUT I feel like there is a lot of wonderful music and sounds to be made with them! Anyway, I think it depends a great deal upon the type/genre of music/sounds that you want to make. The Cycles can do a LOT of different and amazing things, but it's sound seems to be, in some sense, kind of dialed in. If you like that sound, then I feel like the Elektron sequencer on it is amazing. In terms of controllable synth parameters I'd say the Circuit and Cycles are more alike. I feel like the Samples opens a huge door in terms of the _types_ of sounds you can get out of it. I hope this helps!

I am pretty bad beyond the basics ;-; I once spent a ton of time on a family vacation just trying to do 3 cups and spike in a row. I can juggle pretty well, so figured kendama would be no big deal. I also have one of those pill-shaped ones that is basically automatic.
Undulations I wanna try the pill, I’d say I’m just sub par to you cause I can’t do any cup to spikes haha;) I got into dama from working with a Dab guy of mine at a local pizza place and he gave me a brand new one day, I still play it every other day just casually while I’m walkin or at the park listening to music, it’s a great conversation starter, women like shiny things
hey, did you ever see last year some dude came across live transpose on the sequence? he thinks its a feature but he cant figure out how he does it.
I guess it's weird, but I rarely watch videos about this stuff🤷🏻♂️. I guess I would need to know more about the context. You could transpose the sample itself during a sequence, right? All the trigs of the sequence are relative to that, so I guess Function + Tune (or Pitch) or whatever it's called? But that's just 1 track. For all tracks? Idk, something down in the Utility menu? Something weird like sequencing the M:S from it's own midi tracks? Something through the LFO or pad schemes? Anyway, it's a box that always seems to have more to delve into! Thanks for the comment😀!

Interesting. Just ordered the :samples and the Minibrute 2S after 2 weeks of diving into youtube videos about synths. I have no idea what awaits me but i am sitting on hot bricks here.
Well, I feel like you have a lot in store for you when they arrive. Best advice I can give is to make sure your Samples is fully updated. The Elektron Transfer application (as seen in this video for sample handling) makes it pretty easy to update, if needed. The latest update gives nice features, particularly "velocity modulation" which allow variations in pad strikes to do something like change playback speed. While the Model:Cycles is quite different, in the "head", the "body" is basically identical - and there are 5 Cycles videos on this channel (with maybe the one on sequencing being the most relevant?). Anyway, as for your Minibrute? I can only assume it's great. I have a Microbrute - such solid build quality and design, wonderful sound. I assume you will be able to send the Samples sound through the Arturia, maybe mono only, but that could be nice. PS I also did a Samples video on looping that might be of interest. Enjoy your new gear👍🏻!
@@undulations Thank you for the info, i`ll check it out after football. Thats one thing i am hoping for. Being able to send processed samples into the MiniBrute circuit. But even if this doesnt work out well, i`m just starting to see more possibilities. I first thought of the model samples as a beat machine, also considered the Volca sample, but i think the elektron is a bit more advanced and there might also be issues with the volca regarding sample transfer with no USB. Was also thinking about buying the Digitakt only but the magic of the Minibrute cought me stronger. Overall i was amazed by the amount of hardware there is available now, really a tough choice when having your wallet in mind also. Have a good one

To give you a specific suggestion/prompt - use one track on the Model:Samples or Model:Cycles to send MIDI to the NTS-1! I've dabbled with that, as well as sending MIDI to Volcas. Works very, very well, especially with monophonic synths.

Great video. My interest in the Model: Samples has been re-ignited by the recent announcement of the Model: Cycles. I guess the workflow on each is much the same? But the Samples is looking more interesting again now. Might be time to buy my first Elektron device ;-)

I do think the workflows are probably similar, particularly the sequencing, fx, and lfo’s, but I’m intrigued about the whole FM part. I figure, after the Digitone, that Elektron has a good idea about what to include and what to leave out. But, as for Model:Samples, I still feel like it’s a really solid piece of gear👍🏻!
@@undulations I was interested in the Model: Samples when it first appeared. The Cycles has re-ignited my interest. I'm thinking the Samples would ultimately be more interesting with sample loading ability, as your demo brilliantly demonstrates. Saying that, I was completely blown away by the short Richard Devine demos of the Cycles he posted up on Instagram. Amazing. So not sure which to go for now. Maybe if I can get a good priced, 2nd hand Samples this will sway me towards one.

first off, the level of creativity in this lesson... kicking it off with that incredible little method with the hand recorder through the hole in the plate, with the stereo ping pong ball action... that's pure gold, man!! better than gold... what was the stuff in wakanda called again...? i forget now. incrediblanium? no, it wasn't that. but it shoulda been, dangit!! anyway... pearls, man... brilliant stuff!! thank you for that.

there is one question I'm left with, though... how'd you make that little chart with where the all grains line up with the start time parameter dial? I'm assuming it has something to do with where you place each grain in the wav file layout via audacity.

You're welcome! This is the sort of reply that makes it worth doing. I really appreciate you taking the time to express your reaction to it. Now, as for how I made the chart with the grain starts? I just went through beforehand and poked around, found the right values. That said, you've got to be careful not to make your grain file _too_ big, because then you don't have the resolution to really fine-tune where you start on the grains. Then, of course, if you make the grain file too small you might not have as many different sounds as you might want (but the addition of "sample-locking" after this video can make this less of an issue, I think, also make sure to update and get "velocity dependent modulation", where the pad strike intensity can be used to change parameters). And lastly: I think it's vibranium? I think that's what Captain America's shield is made out of. There's also adamantium (Wolverine's skeleton and claws), but I don't think that was a Wakanda thing. I should look it up...

Yes! Also, some big updates since I did this video. For one, you can use the pad velocity to control other parameters (like start position or such). This video is kind of a niche application, but overall it's a nice sampler with a great sequencer, especially for the price. Thanks a lot for checking out the video🙏🏼!

Hi, just got this machine as my first sequencer and one of the first things I thought when I learned that the memory was limited was whether using a clip with many small sounds and the sample start/length to zoom in on each sound would effectively give you multiple sounds per track. Lo and behold there is a name for it called granular synthesis! Thank you for the introduction. Is this different from using the osc samples and the loop/lfo to create synth sounds? Also does the new sample lock feature make this easier to do without having to fiddle with the sample start/length? I will definitely stay tuned for more videos.
Well, I'd say that you are correct that looping the osc samples is probably technically a type of granular synthesis, even though the usage can be quite different. I agree that the new sample locking gives a different way to approach things, but I do still like the method in the video because it doesn't tie up sample slots and allows mixing adjacent grains. Overall, I'd say that sample locking combined with multiple grains per sample would really open up a path to a lot of variety. Your comment has given me some ideas for the next Model:Samples video. great video :) Also some useful tips on audacity. At 10:33 you showing the sheet with the start points of the grains. How did you figure out the start points? Just by fiddling with the sample start position? Or is there a way of knowing which number of the start position matches which time on your sample?
distorson Hey, thank you! Yes, in this case I did it just by fiddling. I’ve never really tried it, but I’m pretty sure the 0-127 start settings are linear within the sample on the M:S. So, by using a fixed sample “grid” in Audacity you could probably do something like have samples start at start values of 0, 10, 20, etc. on the M:S - the actual sounds being evenly spaced, but not necessarily having to be the same size. One thing to look out for is that if we put too many sounds in a sample then we might lose fine control over the loop _length_ and hence the granular “pitch” in this sort of setup. But the upside of that would be being able to blend a bunch of neighboring sounds together. Anyway, thanks for checking it out👍🏻!

Well, I think I did use the ping pong sounds for one grain, but I also used the tick of a grandfather clock, and quite a few other grains that I created in Audacity. Thanks for checking it out👍🏻!

Thanks for checking it out! As I recall, it was a lot of cutting and pasting. I used a few recorded samples but also used the built-in generation features in Audacity for some chirps and noise I think. I may have done some symmetric stuff by copying and reversing stuff. For example, if you have a kickdrum transient you can cut that at the first peak, copy from there to the tail, reverse the copy, and then put that in front of the original. It will be symmetric (and sound kind of like an underwater thud). Hope this helps!

I really appreciate the feedback and support🙏🏼! Yes, I do think something like that should be possible. With the 10 parts I feel like there would be room to have some similar (but not identical samples), then sequencing, and especially motion sequencing🤔 - It just seems like a ton of automation, plus even being able to turn knobs live, seems like some sort of equivalent to a random LFO would be possible. I STILL want to do a video about granular stuff on the Volca Sample 2; I hadn't planned on including any sort of attempt at quasi-synchronous stuff but that could be cool - Do let me know how it goes if you try it out!

Have you considered Clouds by Mutable Instruments in a small rack (it's no longer being produced but clones are available)? With CV you can really push the randomness and density.
Well, first of all, I'm a big fan of Mutable Instruments - I've got Plaits and also Branches, both so nice - and I really like how they open source their designs - so I get a little of their modules in my Arturia MicroFreak and even my Polyphonic Whale (I think Braids and a mini Clouds, respectively). But I think you're right - I should look for a used/cloned Clouds module👍🏻. But since this video I've done some granular in SpaceCraft (on iOS and also as an Ableton plug-in), which I like quite a bit, and I've also gotten a Bastl MicroGranny - which seems pretty limited but is still pretty fun - I'm making a video on that right now (and also revisit using the Model:Samples for granular, knowing a little more and after some firmware upgrades). Anyway, thanks a lot for the suggestion and thanks very much for watching!

thanks, another fascinating exploration, well broken down and easy to follow, jeez, even i can understand it! i'm trying to do something similar with the volca sample and it isn't exactly ideal. based on your experience (microgranny etc), would you recommend the model samples to do decent granular processing? looking to upgrade my volca sample and figure i would get a good drum machine (love those chance settings) and perhaps a fairly decent granular synth for ~$400 cdn. i also have a eurorack set up and the only thing i've seen in my budget is a clouds knock off or the nebulae. i really enjoyed the hands-on audacity grain creation and can't really see how i could get this level of accuracy (grain selection) on clouds or nebulae easily. keep on trucking ...
Well, I think the Model:Samples has a ton of depth for doing granular. 6 tracks, built-in reverb and delay, sample start/length that can be automated a variery of ways, track-based panning, etc. As I mentioned at the end of the MicroGranny video, I'm definitely planning to do a another granular video about the Model:Samples - but more in line with the stuff I've done on the MG and in SpaceCraft. Plus, as you say, it's also a nice groovebox/drum machine for other (or hybrid uses). You still need a computer for sample transfers, but that's quite an easy setup, and I feel like not having resampling (like Digitakt) is less of an issue for granular uses. A lot of it comes down to samples sizes, choosing the length for what you're up to, and sample-locking was added right after I made this video - seems even more flexible with that. @@undulations thanks for the advice! consulted the Roads book re granulation parameters (pg 188) and it seems the Samples only real lack comes in envelope manipulation (shame they declined to add an attack knob). i believe there may be something in the lfo menu but then, apparently you lose the lfo functionality? (only did a quick reading of the manual) i don't quite understand the spatial position parameter but it looks almost like the grains are being piled vertically/polyphonically as well especially in videos with the gr-1 where the LED graphics are very helpful for me to understand exactly what is going on.
@@rainerd9890 This hits right at the core of "true" granular as described in the Roads book and more-or-less in the spirit of Xenakis. It can take some very different processing compared to a typical sampler, as-such. Custom code, advanced daw plug-ins, some modular - they go in that direction. And this video was really me trying to find what I could do - within the classic sense of granular - on the Samples, and the quasi-synchronous version seemed like it fit the gear. BUT, there is a whole other style of granular that's more akin to sample mangling and chopping, etc. Something like SpaceCraft sort of tends to be some of both types, but simplified in terms of polyphony and spatialization. And, I mean, the MicroGranny is monophonic and monaural. So it's a wide field, I guess. You're right about the attack - I think from the groovebox perspective it can be solved by putting the attack in the sample. I did the LFO thing on the Model:Cycles for an IG post, and it does use it up. But, I think - based on doing this video which was a while ago- the Samples does do some sort of smoothing at the "grain" level (which we have no control over). You just don't hear the clicks and pops like you do on the MicroGranny. I keep wishing Korg would make a Volca Granular of some sort🤔.
@@undulations thanks again, the Samples is on order! i just wanted to make sure i could do some granular with the device and its limitations are only a challenge. it's a bit of a disappointment when everything is done auto-magically like on the nebulae in terms of learning, understanding and experimenting even if it can go deeper into pure granular synthesis. like, i wonder what would happen if you prepared your grains in audacity as you did but with 2 different grain tracks (stereo) and converted back to mono? a big mess or perhaps greater density. anyhow, plenty to explore and discover ...

Does M:S just find the start position of each sound as the closest one to a number between 0 and 120?
Jason Wells It doesn’t really do any sort of automated locating, trimming, etc. It all depends on the sample itself and parameters you dial in (by knob, parameter locking, LFO, etc.). I avoid samples that are too big because it limits your resolution for setting start location.

which first sampler/drummachine could you recommend for a guitar player who wants something user-friendly and is looking for sounds that are rather analog sounding, like a real drumkit, but also things more like household items and cans and bottles and so on (think Michael blair’s twisted kit for EZdrummer), maybe even venture in some trip hop sounds. Not really to make complete songs, but rather some backing/jam tracks. So, I was thinking: standalone (tried software, but I prefer an instrument), easy to use, analog sounding (hence maybe a sampler could be better?), not to expensive, say 200 or 300€. Maybe later on even add a Yamaha reface CP. This models:samples looks nice, but I also thought about the novation circuit or korg elektribe…and probably a lot out there I haven’t encountered. Any help is appreciated. take care.
Hey, sorry it took so long to answer. I really feel like the Model:Samples would be a great choice, but also a huge fan of the Electribe style and sound (but I don't have one). The Circuit (which I do have) is cool, but I don't really think of it for natural drum sounds. The Model:Samples comes with nice kit sounds and it's very easy to add more via usb to a laptop or such. It has a really nice sequencer and some built-in effects. I have the other video (lo-fi loops) that might give a better idea about normal use. Then, I did like 5 Model:Cycles videos - definitely not for natural drum sounds - BUT a lot of the stuff about the sequencer and fx is basically the same. Best of luck!
why don't you continue working your samples in the computer (DAW), instead of the elektron? The result would be quite similar, don't you think so?
I feel like that's a totally valid point to make. I guess the easiest answer is that this is for somebody that _already_ has a Model:Samples - something different that they can do with their groovebox. But I also feel like hardware tends to guide the user, give a subset of choices compared to a DAW - so while I probably could duplicate this in Live (or another DAW) by using a similarly mapped MIDI controller - I probably would have done something different. That said, I do really enjoy granular synthesis in a DAW, particularly with the SpaceCraft plug-in and using the MidiFighter Twister as the controller (I did a Delta Waves video on this channel using that setup). I have never owned a sampler, sequencer or synthesizer… what should I start with
Well, I feel like I could help, at least give you some things to consider, but first some questions:
- any thoughts about how much you'd want to spend. just roughly, like under $100, under $200, etc.
- what kind of music/sounds do you like, or even better, what kind of music/sounds do you think you might like to explore? (former may not be the same as latter) so, specifics like beats-based music vs more freeform ambient would be good to know. also if you want any vocals of any sort (not necessarily your own, maybe samples).
- do you feel musical, technical, exploratory, etc? definitely no requirements, but it might suggest where to start.
- do you have a laptop, pc, solid smartphone, tablet? (some gear needs to update, interface, etc. and there are a lot of useful apps).
lmk and I will be able to have a pretty reasonable idea of suggestions.

@@moorechez67 Well, that much gives a lot of options. If you want to go the "beatmaking" route then you could get a Roland SP 404 Mark 2, which many people swear by as a all-in-one system. If you wanted to do more experimental modular synthesis things then you could get a Make Noise Music 0-Coast synth and an Arturia Keystep keyboard or a Korg SQ-1 sequencer to control the synth. If you want more of a middle route then getting two (or more) things would work. Maybe an Arturia MicroFreak for many synth sounds, combined with a Korg Volca Drum for beats. Bear in mind that as soon as you have two (or more) it's common to need more things (cables, mixer) to be able to sync them up and combine the sounds. Lastly, one way to start would be to get the instrument shown in this video, the Elektron Model:Samples, and see how it goes. It can do so much. Ships with built-in samples, pretty easy to add more by a laptop usb. You can do synth stuff with it, you can have vocal samples, a really broad range of choices. (This video is kind of a super specific niche use if the Model:Samples, looking at Elektron's videos or a ton of clips on Instagram would give a better idea). If you want more synth sounds and beats then maybe the Elektron Model:Cycles would work (I have a bunch of videos on here about that box). Best of luck with it all!

Hey, thank you very much for the feedback! First thing - if you haven't seen it, you might be interested in the first video of my Model:Cycles series. I talked a lot at the beginning about how the Model:Cycles, Model:Samples, Digitone, and Digitakt fit together as products. I haven't used my Circuit enough to really say for sure, but it seems like a really nice instrument for the price. As for Volcas - I get that some people don't see them as serious instruments, BUT I feel like there is a lot of wonderful music and sounds to be made with them! Anyway, I think it depends a great deal upon the type/genre of music/sounds that you want to make. The Cycles can do a LOT of different and amazing things, but it's sound seems to be, in some sense, kind of dialed in. If you like that sound, then I feel like the Elektron sequencer on it is amazing. In terms of controllable synth parameters I'd say the Circuit and Cycles are more alike. I feel like the Samples opens a huge door in terms of the _types_ of sounds you can get out of it. I hope this helps!

I once spent a ton of time on a family vacation just trying to do 3 cups and spike in a row. I can juggle pretty well, so figured kendama would be no big deal. I also have one of those pill-shaped ones that is basically automatic.
