  • Are you tired of making silly mistakes on your NLS homework? Have you tried working on your braille literacy? For me, daily reading a fun book in braille greatly improved my proofreading skills!
    In this video -
    • I show you where to download three FREE braille reference charts,
    • I explain how the alphabet in braille is organized (making it easier to remember!),
    • What I look for in a book (making it more enjoyable to sight-read the braille), and
    • I talk about my thought process on how I decode a book in braille.
You get extra credit if you can tell me which number I said wrong. Clue- it's when I'm talking about how many pages are in the Courage of Helen Keller book! Sometimes I get nervous when I'm recording! LOL

I make specialized labels for particular medical devices and am trying to find new, better tactile versions for those who aren't sighted. Your videos are perfect for getting me more familiar with Braille, it felt discouraging needing to sight-read it due to finger neuropathy, you encouraged me all the way. thank you so much, fellow linguist. 😊♥️

Thanks for saying hi! Your project sounds really interesting. You probably already thought of this, but do you have any product testers who are visually impaired? Or are you adding labels to medical devices for personal use? I imagine the testers would have some great feedback for you. I'm glad you found my channel encouraging.

@@brailleadventures thanks so much. They are for both personal use and industry, it's a bit of a niche, and actually I do not yet have a test group but it is one of the most important things ofc.

Thank you so much! I made the Louis Braille shirt in honor of his birthday. For the past couple of years I've hosted a virtual birthday party in his honor. I'll announce on our Facebook page the details for the next party (it will be around January 4, 2022), if you'd like to join us!

I am sighted, but lost one eye; and am learning it just in case I need it. I started off computer-braille only, with an Orbit Reader 20. I got a 40, and try to read auto-contracted braille, and always get stuck on the initial-letter-contractions; and run back to computer braille. I spend so much time referencing that Aroga chart. It didn't start to sink in until I got a slate, and start making a braille copy of it; while also going through braille display reading in UEB2 mode.
I resisted contracted braille for as long as I can.. I even 3D printed out copies of the APH 8-dot slate (which needs to be printed at 90% size to work, because the slate is too big for standard stylus); and paper is just so verbose. I struggle especially with paper books printed double-sided; because the dots are more subtle on paper, and the double-sidedness makes it gibberish to read visually. But I am finally starting to pick up enough speed to comprehend what I am reading. (ie: Genesis, Job, Gilgamesh, .... and Linux shell and programming languages).

      Hi Rob,
Thank you so much for leaving a comment and sharing your story. That is so smart to develop your braille literacy skills now, just in case you end up needing it. I also sight-read braille and I completely agree, braille on both sides of a page looks like gibberish. Online I've seen the file for 3D printing an 8 cell slate. That's good to know to print it at 90%. Thanks for the tip! How do you like it? I am a huge fan of slates and flashcards. For me, that's when things start to click into place. Funny you should mention the initial-letter contractions. I am relearning them now. I can read them in context, but I want to be able to rattle them off. I'm using paper flashcards that you can print off from our free online library of UEB study material. The file is in the folder called "Flashcards." Let me know if you have any questions. tinyurl.com/uebstudygroup

I like Seedlings Braille Books for Children. They have 1000s of titles in UEB braille. Also, check out Texas School for the Blind's free, online library. You can download braille files from them.

I don't think I would have gotten anywhere at all without buying a cheap braille display. Books are so expensive, that after you can read braille on websites with your eyes; you should invest in a cheap display and copy a bunch of free Project Gutenberg books onto it. I think Orbit Reader 20 Plus will auto-convert plain computer text to UEB and UEB2 for $700 (the same that my 40 char one does for $1400)... But I got the $600 one that you have to do the conversion to braille files yourself. I kind of prefer the smaller 20 char one when I just want to read computer braille, especially for using Twitter on iPhone.
If you have a braille display that does conversions for you, then you can switch between computer braille, ueb, ueb2 to compare them on something that you have memorized. I do this for chapter 1 of Genesis for much of my practice.
Now that I have a braille slate, I stopped using displays for a while as I get used to taking random notes in braille as I work.
