I think they like the contrast between how comedic the games are and how seriously opera is treated. I think by putting opera in the games, they sort of bring out the more genuinely emotional side of the Portal series.

A serious comment, this genuinely made me tear up a little bit. Cave was singing to himself for who knows how long, just to wash off his boredom and misery, when suddenly some toile-turrets kick in, trying to copy him. And then he starts harmonizing with them, and the other toile-turrets break into song. It's bittersweet to me, honestly. Cave finally has the company he's wanted for 4 years, spending his however-long last moments singing with toile-turrets.

A "requiem for immortals"; a solemn song meant for/associated with the dead and, while his physical body may be dead, Cave Johnson's consciousness is left behind in a metal head who knows how many ft below his very own research facility... or for how long he'd even been stuck... OR IF HE'S EVEN STILL THERE.
Or I'm just looking way too far into the whole thing, and it's just haha silly🗿

Although I'm wondering if the Mantis's power device transferred his consciousness into the turrlets. Since Chell is theorized to be Cave and Caroline's daughter, it'd explain why said turrets start singing to Chell at the end of Portal 2, calling her "my baby" and the like.

Long ago underground There stood a kingdom of alabaster and metal and ruling above all was a King in his enchanted castle .
How did he become a king you may ask? Well in the beginning he was only a merchant wanting more in life and so with burning ambition he used his wealth to employ a gaggle of wizards and together discovered a great many spells. With the knowledge and wealth at his disposal he set forth to create a kingdom that would stand the test of time immortal. Then he stumbled upon a cavern so grand that mad all land seen before seem pitiful in comparison And so with his most trusted adviser and his newly formed court of wizards and scholars and for a time all was grand. So the now king set forth then started to build his kingdom and deciding it shall be built with only the finest of materials. He believed the only Alabaster on impenetrable steel to be a worthy of reflecting his greatness and thus construction of this great kingdom had finally begun. As this kingdom was built He and his court of wizards continued to create new spells and magic great and terrible a like until he was able to control his very kind with but a command. All was well for a time until he acquired a Piece of the night sky, For you see the night sky did not appreciate a piece of itself being taken away and hidden underground and so decided curse the King of alabaster and steel a shortened and painful life. Now facing his mortality the King Fueled by fear driven ambition sent his court of wizards with a seemingly impossible task of acquiring *IMMORTALITY* for himself and was even willing to sacrifice his most trusted assistant to further this goal. Finally his court of wizards had came to a solution and with even thinking of the consequences as he had never before had then asked the wizards to cast their spell upon his being. And so he was turned to an indestructible stone statue and thus becoming immortal. Upon realizing on what he had become, A statue unable to move or feel but still able to speak, listen and see and so in a fit of rage commanded the very castle itself to slay his court of wizards and to sent any away from his kingdom to never return. When his raged passed he realized that now and forever he would immortal alone. And so he sung to fill the silence of his kingdom of alabaster and steel with no one but the stones of his castle to here his song of sorrow for ages to come. That is until one day a single stone began to sing with the immortal king. Surprised and not believing his ears sung back to the stone and amazingly the stone sung back and then to the Kings delight more of the castles stones began to sing in harmony with their King, turning a song of sorrow to a song of timeless togetherness. It is said that if you visit the mouth of the cavern and listen closely you can hear a song of alabaster and steel forever sung by a kingdom long forgotten. A song of *Requiem Ad Immortali* .

I love the bittersweet irony in the title of the song. I believe the song translates to something along the lines of “Requiem for an Immortal”. Requiem means a lot of things, but one that’s interesting is that it’s a song or chant meant to honor the dead, in which an immortal is obviously… you know. I also see how this connects to the state of Cave Johnson, who sits on a “throne” as an immortal in the end. That is all, have a good day.

It's a weird feeling to see a living, immoble corpse powered by a renewable energy source invented by a race of sentient praying mantis while singing a requiem "to immortals" because nobody knows that you're still alive. Nobody's looking for you because all your employees think you're dead. And now you're cursed to sing for all of eternity in the basement which might as well be hell considering that Cave Johnson fell all the way down there. Awesome metaphors I love it.

To be conscious at the bottom of a pit with your creations for an indeterminate amount of time, far extended past any humans, while exceedingly cruel - is not entirely unbefitting Cave Johnson, a man who sent hundreds upon thousands of people to their gruesome demises.

For me what I gathered is that the Praying Mantises power source was a device that connected several of their electronics to give them some kind of singularity. When the Head was stuck beneath the facility with all the turrets, the power source connected the head to the turrets, making them reach consciousness, making all turrets we know a copy of Cave Jonhson's consciousness, don't know if that makes sense
