    Fred Rogers wasn't just spreading positivity though. He was helping people manage their problems. That was a HUGE part of the show. He helped kids (and their parents) deal with life when things didn't work out. Disappointments and failure were things that people needed help with. And that was Rogers' legacy. Not just spreading happy thoughts, which is what most people think he did. He did so much more.

      Chiming in to support this-- he was such a wise and compassionate human being and I remember watching him washing Officer Clemons's feet and then later learning that the actor that played that character was gay as well as black (in a time when either of these was a reason to discriminate/even beat someone with little to no repercussions) and when he tried to protest, Fred basically told him in no uncertain terms he loved him regardless. He didn't beat around the bush, he didn't lie and he kept his truths digestible for a young audience and deeply personal and true to life. I /aspired/ to be like him and I still do.

    I’m glad Mr Rogers never turned out to be a bad person behind the scenes or even in his personal life. That fact really cements the idea that he was in the holy trinity of wholesomeness with Bob Ross and Steve Irwin.

    I grew up watching Mr. Rogers reruns as a kid. I never gave the guy much thought; I just thought he was some guy. But when I saw the trailer for this documentary, I started crying at the realization for what he was. I'm not a very religious guy, but I'll say this: he's the closest thing we'll ever get to Jesus coming back. His messages of respect and unconditional love really were something to behold. I'm gonna turn 20 in a month, and I still go on CZcams to watch an episode of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood every morning, just to remind myself that there can still be some genuine good in the world.

    Don't think that the past was a gentler, more innocent time. Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood started during the Vietnam War. It started the year that MLK was assassinated. It started the year RFK was assassinated. It started the year where an act had to be passed by Congress to make refusing to rent to black people illegal. It started in a year where the country was boiling over with angry protests.
    Mr. Rogers would be phenomenal now. So what if we're whining at each other on social media? He dealt with the Vietnam War era. Our bitching wouldn't phase him.

    • @mallorycarll6280
      @mallorycarll6280 Před 6 lety +7

      StormWolf -- That's what I believe too. Mr. Rogers was broadcasting compassion and civility while in the middle of the segregation and civil rights crisis. And let's not forget, he had a children's program before "Mr. Rogers Neighborhood" aired. He was already writing songs and scripts about a decade before his principal television show.
      He lived through the Kennedy assassination, segregation, Vietnam, Watergate, the Challenger disaster, AIDS and discrimination of gay rights, the Gulf War, and many other taxing cultural events.
      He came back to speak after 9/11. And while he doubted whether his words would be "worth it" after that terrorist attack... Mr. Rogers still championed kindness and stayed true to his mission in life-- making sense of a scary world.
      He was human. I'm sure our new culture and social media would confuse him, at first. But he saw the power of television and expertly used that in its infancy, I'm sure he could have figured out how to use social media in its infancy too. He was that forward-thinking and fearless.

    What saddens me is all the people in the comments saying things like "we'll never have someone as kind or good or wholesome as Mr. Rogers again". Or, "People are all born horrible". You do realize he was just a man right? He had thoughts and feelings and struggles, that was his whole point! Everyone and anyone can be capable of the amazing kindness and love he showed the world. It has to be a choice that people make, it's a discipline, it doesn't just happen.

    • @LPTV84
      @LPTV84 Před 6 lety +5

      Elizabeth Rockhill Personally, I think we are all born with some inate evil. Though not totally. Sure a baby can look like an angel, and to make it hate, you must teach hatred, but you can't teach a liar or the desire to take or even the desire to win over others. I watched my baby cousin grow into a kid and he was good, but nasty sometimes from traits I don't see from his mom and dad. Perhaps he learned it somewhere else, but I believe we are all born with some inherit "sin". Yet, you are very right. Regardless of what I said, it isn't impossible to be a good and caring and loving person. Mr. Rogers is rare because we don't want to make it common and yet it is so easy to just shake a hand, hug, kiss, and say I love you and when wrong is done, good can prevail, even if it takes time. I know Mr. Rogers was Christian, and he read a lot from the bible that influenced his views. You don't have to be religious, but I know one set of verses that are universal, and tell us what love is.
      Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.
      Please won't you be my neighbor? :)

      @bryangutierrez5 Před 6 lety +9

      Humanity is not born with innate evil, we're born with innate instincts required for survival. Instincts like greed, anger, and capacity for violence. These things don't make you a bad person, they just make you an asshole from time to time. Being able to overcome those kinds of natural instincts and to put the well being of others at the same level as your own well being is how people become "good". Unfortunately, a lot of societies reward if not directly encourage being an asshole. You can definitely teach a child to be a liar, when they realize lying gets them things they want, or taking things from others is easier than working for them. As a society we show that these are ways to get ahead in life, to get one over everybody else. The virtues of being honest and forthright can't survive when we elevate vain, uneducated, or pessimistic celebrities as role models. It's not a problem with people, people can be good, people are good, but people are also flawed, so you have to be able to accept that before you start judging the entire species for it. The real problem is with the society we've built around ourselves, and how it's evolved into everyone just looking out for themselves.

    I saw this movie last night. I was a kid when Mr. Rogers Neighborhood was on. Watching this film, I realized I took him for granted because he was so cool. As I grew older and moved away from Mr. Rogers, I forgot most of his life lessons. This movie brought it all back. When it was over, I had to sit and compose myself before walking out of the theater. I haven't cried driving home from a movie since "12,Years A Slave" & "Brokeback Mountain". Jeremy is right in one sense. This movie is needed to remind us of our compassion, humility, tolerance, & our humanity. On a petty note, I can think of a LOT of people I know who should see this film. Highly recommended!

    What's funny to me is that I was born in England in the year 2000. I grew up on English shows. In The Night Garden, 64 Zoo Lane, CBeebies bedtime stories taught me my morals. I have never in my life watched an episode of Mr Rogers Neighbourhood. I'd never heard of it until the trailer for this documentary was released. And yet I bawled my eyes out at that trailer. I to this day can't explain why or how I just cry everytime. I have no connection to Mr Rogers, no memory of him or his voice. Yet hearing him speak his beliefs made me cry like I used to when I was a little one and heard "the time has come to say goodnight" song begin on CBeebies and knew it was time for bed. Or like i did when I heard the Bear in The Big Blue House song the other day for the first time in years. He brought me straight back to my childhood when he wasn't even a part of it. THAT'S magic beyond my comprehension. Fred Rogers was one of a kind. I hold nothing but love and respect for him. Thank you sir for bringing us a glimmer of light in this world. 💛💛💛💛💛

      I am not a Christian anymore but after an epiphany in Rocky Mountain National park i have tried really really hard to be kind and always be "fantastic" no matter what is going on. I have faced things i would never wish on anyone and right now i have crap in my life but i still have a roof over my head, 4 amazing animals, a thoughtful daughter i have raised to be a productive member of society, a wonderful partner, and a family that loves and supports me, so i am fantastic today. I have to tell someone something they will not like hearing today and i will do it with kindness. Do i succeed every day to be kind? Oh no, but i honestly think of Mr Rogers and Bob ross when i feel that negativity and think, how can i make this mistake a happy little tree and how can i do it with kindness?
      I can not make anyone else do these things but i can. Won't you be my neighbor and help me spread kindness?

So yes, you can be my neighbor and spread your kindness to me and everyone who wants it :)

      LPTV it is no big deal. Simply that doing good works because a god told you seems a lot less valid then doing it because it is the right thing. As i was good to people because it was right, all religions seemed invalid. If i am a good person because it is right then any of the gods would be happy to have me in the afterlife i feel...and if they dont then i still feel right with my lack of religion.

While I'll never be great as him in my whole life, I wanted his overwhelmin' positive and well thought out sayings, because this was the same man who always got my foster parents into stayin' together. To them, he was a savior amongst their marriage and I'll never forget that. :')

    There kinda is a Mr Rodgers Neighborhood show on TV now. It's called Daniel Tigers Neighborhood and it's produced by his kids. It's as good and clean as the original. But I don't know if it tackles the big topics like he did, but I wasn't looking for them, so they might be in there.

      Susan Rose that is the truth! And the adults around me weren't so distracted by social media of Their Own either, so they could be more attention to me than they could there cell phones that I see so many mothers staring at while their kids sit looking like neglected zombies. My mom was happy to turn on Mister Rogers and sit for that time and quietly crochet or have a Pepsi and a cigarette or just relax. No phone ringing, no Facebook notifications, not a thousand TV channels to distract either one of us, and I'm not talking about the 50s here! Late 80s into early 90s. I'm so glad she turn on mr. Rogers instead of some silly soap opera or nonsense repetitive cartoons.

    Mr. Rogers really was a man that no one had anything bad to say about, and pretty much only good things. I'm sure he had his ups and downs, but that never came through in his faithful, earnest, and genuine message to kids, and in many ways, to adults.
    It's curious how we're seeing many homages to the 80s recently. Maybe we're missing some heart that has been lost in the age of social media and anonymous flame-war postings? Another artifact of modern times is we're seeing so many people avoiding, or outright abandoning, social media and the unfortunate toxicity that has been introduced.
    Anyway, I'm glad he's being honored and I, for one, miss his message and heart very much.

    I saw it with my Mom and younger sister. My Mom was born and raised in Philadelphia, and had a couple of friends who worked for Mr. Rogers at WQED in Pittsburgh. She said when he passed away, they were absolutely gutted as he was very much a Father-figure to them.
    My sister and I were raised on Mr. Rogers. It's probably been 15 years since I've watched one of his episodes, but after seeing the emotional trailer to this documentary... I started to re-watch songs and clips from his show and as a 26 year old now, I was absolutely mesmerized.
    I've been going through a rough couple of months, both mentally and emotionally. There was a stretch of weeks where I would just cry myself to sleep. No sugar coating it-- I thought I was a failure.
    Things are better now. I was able to weather those anxieties and I am in a much better state of mind. But I am with you, Jeremy. I selfishly needed this movie. I needed to see and listen from a man who radiated love, compassion, and kindness. Hearing him sing and constantly remind us "I like you just the way you are" was ever so hopeful.
    I cried many times throughout the movie. I could hear other people cry too. It has been a long time since I experienced something like that in a movie theater. His legacy of kindness lives on. That is the ultimate gift that we can ask out of ourselves.

Example they would say he was a marine sniper with 100 kills and had tattoos on his arms and covered up with sweaters. The truth was he was a Presbyterian minister and a pacifist and never served. He wore the sweaters because his mom made them for him. He was originally from my hometown of Latrobe, PA.

      asianbiz1 -- Yes. The man was the epitome of kindness and compassion. He was a passionate advocate for children's development, and he encouraged children to talk about their feelings in ways they never had before. He was a revolutionary in the fact that he saw children as equals, and believed that children are much more intuitive than adults give them credit for.

      Yes! You will learn about some of the politics of the time and the funding for public television, how he very gently influence many people when it came to the really heavy issues of the time from racism, divorce, even assassination. Even if you never saw his show, you will get a sense of it through clips of what it was and pick it up pretty quickly, and you may just feel like watching a few episodes even though they're meant for children it is extraordinarily positive and relaxing.

    I am thoroughly cynical...but I won't say an unkind word about Mr. Rogers. Miss him and John Candy a lot. 80's kids favorite unofficial unks.
