  • Tuesday, 6 June 1944, the day of the Allied invasion of Normandy better known as D-Day. It was the largest seaborne invasion in history and it is one of WW2's most famous events. However, if it wasn't for a particular weather forecast D-Day, and as a result the entire war, could have gone very differently.

My father and I went to see "The Longest Day" (1962) at a local theater. One notable thing: before the movie was screened, "The Star-Spangled Banner" was played. As we stood there in the theater half-light, it was a unique experience that has never been topped or repeated. My father was a junior officer in the 442nd RCT, so he was "in theater" at the time.

Those are the men I thought of when I became a Marine 44 years later. Those and the men that had fought those blood bath battles in the Pacific. They fought for a reason worth my own sacrifice during my time, without them there wouldn't have been a reason to fight for our freedom today, we wouldn't even have it! History was the only subject in school I could relate to. Wish we could have saw an episode like this back then, the results of what was happening during and after the mistaken war in Viet Nam was all we knew back in my youthful day. My Grandfather's days were still known to me and I'm glad for that, it should never be forgotten!

@@Augfordpdoggie Luckily by my own hand no. But it happens all the time in war. Have I by my inaction for a person in need of my help, I'll never know. I'm talking about a lose of compassion for life that doesn't include hand outs for people who want to live off of others and use them for their free ticket like todays world seems to lean toward and is completely lost in itself by. I see your question as something deeper in my soul, did I do right by the people I have known in my life. There is No such thing as a True Christan denomination. You believe in the word as it was taught by the Disciples or you don't, money invaded everything and made it all wrong two thousand years ago after Jesus died for us. There is still only one way and this evil world makes it harder to follow everyday, that's it's purpose now.

@@ericmansfield6609 I lived without a cell phone from 1967 to the mid 90s, I admit these smart phones are a great tool, but I could survive without, these people would crawl up and die if they didn't have Facebook, the war was real to us because we had people directly involved, to people in their mid 20s and younger it an abstract consept, I hope we don't make the same mistakes again in the future. I never knew how we had a better forecast because of observations in Ireland, it makes sense, I'm in the buffalo area so sometimes I'll check Detroit to see what upstream.

Because the 20,000 paratroopers were not enough to take France without support from the beaches. Plus the bombers failed to take out the machine gun nests on all the beaches. That's why Omaha had so much bloodshed. That is a controversy to this day. Some say they overshot their target, others said they had the wrong coordinates. And others say the beaches were bombed but the machine nests were buried underground and not visible from the air.
