Because despite them being classy and seeming like good people, the country did not really improve under them. Many would argue it got worse. When it comes down to it, people elect whoever they think can help them improve their own lives. Obama's policies left a lot to be desired, especially after all the campaign promises he made before getting into office. He ended up being a more presentable continuation of G.W. Bush. He was a huge disappointment with no lasting impact other than being the first black president. Even his Nobel prize was for show and unearned, because his strategy of nuclear non-proliferation never materialized after he won it.
I voted for Obama twice, but even I don't think it's a surprise someone like Trump won. When you consider that the last 50 years have been filled with relatively presentable, but ultimately unsuccessful presidents who seem to have led us further and further down a destructive course, it's not surprising that voters have begun to rebel against the mainstream norms. I predict Trump-like candidates will only continue on both sides of the political aisle in the coming elections. There are far too many people completely disillusioned with the status quo to ever go back now. The country is in a lot of trouble, but it's not just because of Trump. It's because the supposed mainstream presidents before him, like Obama, didn't do their jobs.

@m hm I guess that's somewhat true, but that's the way it is for every president now. The country has become hyper-partisan, where the extremes of each side rule each side's narrative.
However, Obama did have a majority in both Congressional houses the first two years of his presidency. He could of accomplished many of his campaign promises during that time and the Republicans wouldn't have been able to do much about it. Although, he comes off as a nice guy with a likeable personality, the truth is he is much more closely aligned with neo-liberal elitists than it would initially seem. He made a lot of promises about ending the wars, overturning the Patriot Act, closing Guantanamo, closing the secret prisons, increasing human rights, and taking care of the working class, but once he got into office he pretty much followed George W. Bush's policies and did none of that.
That tells me he was either wholly incompetent or bought by the same people who bought Bush. In hindsight it's become obvious that he works for the same people. He's an elitist who pretends to be an everyman. Him, Hillary Clinton, and George W. Bush have a lot in common. They are all part of the same club.

I don't think we will ever have another First Lady as kind and as real as Michelle Obama. She is classy personified, but touchable. She could dress like a Princess and take the stage, or dress down and walk the back roads of countries with overwhelming disease, poverty and hunger. Countries where women are considered second class citizens, but where she made clear to them that their lives mattered. I doubt anyone is going to continue the garden she started, but I wish they would. She was out there inviting children who never even in their wildest dreams imagined they would walk the grounds of the White House, teaching them the value of gardening and eating right. I hope one day (obviously with a President beyond the one we currently have) the White House will once again open its doors and events to average people, especially children, who have been told they don't belong there. Michele was an outstanding role model for not only all Americans (women AND men), but people around the globe. At the top of my bucket list is the chance to one day meet this wonderful woman and thank her in person for all she has done. I cry whenever I think about the fact she is gone from the White House. Maybe not to you. But perhaps, it could empower someone to be in love with their body and not be ashamed by it. Politics aside, (and believe me I'm not a fan of Trump's at all)...I don't think there's ever anything wrong with someone showing off their body for any reason. I mean at the end of the day they are our bodies, and we choose to do with them as we please so long as we don't hurt other people or hurt ourselves. True, maybe it's not considered "classy" or "distinguished" but a person's past is their past...and these little moments whether for Melania it was a lapse in judgement...or perhaps she just really wanted to show off her body, we should not be ridiculing her for it. That's not something we should be teaching our kids...to ridicule each other for the choices we take with our own bodies.
