- After some catches of Norfolk-Southern's H66 running in Lehigh Gorge, I was finally able to do a proper chase on March 24, 2024. The H66 did the full trip from Allentown to Hazelton, PA and back, though I started and ended my chase in Northampton.
This was the third weekend that the H66 did this trip in lieu of splitting the route between the H66 and H67. The H67 has been abolished (whether temporarily or permanently is still TBD). The H67 used to run from Hazelton to Packerton and back in the middle of the night, while the H66 normally runs from Allentown to Packerton. Now the H66 does the full Allentown to Hazelton roundtrip on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, but those days won't include all the stops at other yards and industries. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays the H66 will resume its normal Allentown to Packerton run servicing local industries along the way.
Chasing with me and supplying valuable information was my friend Hunter from @ULRailfan. Thanks for sharing this adventure with me! We also met up with fellow railfans Eric, Andrew, Denise, and Jimmy at some of the locations. It was great to meet all of you, and I hope you enjoyed your chases as well. Also check out my friend Ian's video at @LRSX because he caught the H66 and Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway passing each other north or the rock cut!

Always enjoy your videos, Jamie -- that was a great (and beautifully photographed) chase!
Thanks so much, so glad you enjoyed it!
Good morning Jamie!
I hate to sound like a broken record, but I love the sound of trains. Not only did you do a wonderful job of capturing everything visually but the sound is outstanding. You even climbed mountains! Well done friend.

Good evening Dennis! Lol that's right, I literally did climb a mountain on that one! That chase was a lot of fun, and the weather was perfect for it. Glad you enjoyed the sights and sounds on yet another of my adventures.
Always great to see some trains! Finally got some time today to sit down and watch some videos.
Awesome, Matt, great to hear from you. Hope you've been doing well!
Great video Jamie! I’m still not used to see footage of NS in the Lehigh Gorge lol. Also really cool to see them head through Weatherly; I had to drive through there for the inaugural Pittston train last year and wondered what passed through. And of course the awesome view of the mine, it turned out great!
Thanks so much Collin! It's still a novelty for me to see NS in Lehigh Gorge too. That's cool that you passed through Weatherly once, I hadn't realized you did that. Well now you know lol! I found a better way to get to the mine, so the next video that has it has some different angles. There's a TON of angles you could film there, really cool place. R&N does use that track too, and I hope to catch them on it someday too.
I just spent a week in the Jim Thorpe area, and wondered when NS ran up the gorge. Thanks for giving us the story.
Glad I could help!
Awesome video Jamie
Thanks Marilyn!
Rewatching Jamie!
I very much appreciate it!
Well, hmmmmm, the 7030 sure sounded like a steamer at Weatherly, thats kinda awesome for an EMD horn❗
Lol 7030 has had some weirdness with its horn in recent months.
@@JamieMakin they dont need to fix it, that steam whistle sound is awesome❗
A used ta live in Bethlehem Pennsylvania n that train station in Northampton PA in the 90s there used ta be a factory there called the botany 500 ma mom used ta work there ma younger sister and me till they closed n moved ta Mexico A see that alot things have changed since A lived there A moved South about 2000 2001 lived in Florida till 2010 n now living in Georgia
Thanks for sharing those memories.
@@JamieMakin ya welcome
Nice video Jamie. I wonder how many NS guys are around that are qualified up there?
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! I've gotta guess not too many NS crew are qualified to run there.
Jamie, as always nicely done. Question though......the H66 seems to be over powered? Two engines for eleven cars? Does not seem economical. Is it because of grades? R&N seems to do same thing. PIME train going up Susquehanna on old LV line has two engines on front of ten car train and two on rear? Keep them videos coming.
The grades are a definitely steep, particularly from M&H Junction to Hazelton, but they also like to have one locomotive facing forward for each direction. They have a runaround track in Hazelton, but not a wye.
Great Job Jaime! Loved those 3 last spots, Stockton Mines, Coalport Bridge then the last bridge. NS is alive and well in the Antracite region there. 7 hours!! You're dedicated. 🚂🚃🚃🚃
Thanks so much! It was a really fun chase, but not surprisingly I was pretty tired out by the end of it. It was worth it though, lol! Glad you enjoyed it.
Was this track originally Erie.
No, it was originally Lehigh Valley.
