We Can't Believe This! Europe in the Dominican Republic? 😲 Las Terrenas Samana | Travel Guide 2022

  • In this video we're exploring the town of Las Terrenas, Samana, the Dominican Republic.
In the last video we visited some of the best beaches in Las Terrenas but in this video we're checking out the actual town. Las Terrenas is very different from Cabarete and has a very European (French and Italian) vibe.
We walk around the boardwalk and waterfront area, then head into town a bit where we check on some complexes and shops. We stop at Puerto Plaza, one of the main eating and shopping areas in town which happen to look like two cruise ships. We stop for lunch at Creperie Les Blonds.
We try to do some boutique shopping as Las Terrenas has so many cute shops but unfortunately most are closed because it's a Sunday.
We lastly walk further east along the water where we stop at a restaurant right on the water to have an Aperol Spritz cocktail.

Awesome!!! Las terrenas used to be one of my favorite places. It’s crazy to see how much is grown over the years. Europeans started visiting Samana in the 80s BTW. The French are the ones who actually started migrating to this area and had the vision of recreating a little bit a France in Las Terrenas. Then the Italians followed, although they already had a huge presence in the southeast (Bayahibe, Juan Dolio, etc). Germans and British started migrating to Cabarete in the late 90s. And now is the Russians. For some reason, they are moving to the DR by the hundreds. 😂

& don’t forget that the deep southwest of the Dominican Republic, is geographically removed from the country’s primary tourist destinations - but those who get closer will find that remoteness has its perks: the most biodiverse reserve and parks in the country, surfing beaches drawing athletes in search of their next break, fresh water cascades turned natural recreational swimming parks, birding havens tucked amid mountain ranges, and plantations producing some of the country’s finest coffee.⬇️

Another little history of Samaná. After the US Civil War a great number of African Americans moved to Samaná where they started a new life. They're locally called "Cocolos" so don't be surprised if you meet a black Dominican with an English last name.

There's a lot of Canadians, French, Italian, Hatians, Dominicans and a few Americans who also live in Las Terrenas. There's a french school, amazing bilingual doctors, great food options from Mexican, Indian, Italian, French and Asian food and grocery stores. Usually only the people who live in that side know of Las Terrenas but it's getting popular now. A lot of European/Canadians are buying investment properties or just buying a property to move. The housing market is brutal there.

Loved your video again this week. I became a little hooked on looking at more info about this area as it is beautiful. It has been gaining popularity and especially in 2021 has had a lot of growth with new construction of condos/villas etc. Lots of opportunity in the buy/sell and rent area as more people making changes to their lifestyle due to the last two years. I think many have guessed that you are going inwards to a mountain area and probably exploring some waterfall/spring areas? Will have to wait to see. Interesting to see how you compare the two places; so many factors to consider that will be different for many people.

Ontarians here ! Husband and i drove to Las Terrenas from Cabarete! Not much difference except the beaches are calmer and nicer ! Going into town is a chaos. Other than fruit and some veggies food is more expensive than in Ontario! Actually most things are ! Honestly dont know how the low income Domenican survive here . Beautiful island and beautiful people that is whats keeps us coming back😊

Thanks for another great video. Greetings from Ottawa 🇨🇦. The airport El Catay serves mostly Canadian and European cities....one American...Charlotte AA.
Very nice Bahia Resort El Portillo but I recommend you stay in the 'town' and find an Air BnB....lots to be found. Try to stay in the center close to the two large grocery stores. There is a good liqour store just east of the graveyard with good prices....which seem to be regulated.
    I highly recommend Las Terrenas

I'm not a historian but the first time I visited Las Terrenas was in 1991. Las Terrenas grew faster because of El Portillo. Basically a community of Canadians, French and Spanish started visiting, some who where pilots that had their cabins next to the ocean, next to what now is Bahia Principe El Portillo. The creation of Portillo Airport gave access to those that could travel by air ( Similar on how Punta Cana started with Frank Rainiery ) The roads where practically none existing.. It has grown slowly with time ( Compare to Punta Cana ) but the visitors now are way different than back then. The airport closed because of ..... not good practice and use.
Hope you have fun in Jarabacoa.

I have to Google the history of Puerto Plata and Punta Cana. I remember the island was not quite developed during the 70's. It is true that the DR has made major investment in the 90's and 2000's to open all these resorts to attract visitors from Europe and Latin Americas. It is You Tuber like Delightful Travellers (Anna & Trevor), Jumping Places (Chris & Carol), that open up all these fascinating places for us to experience.

Looks like an amazing place. You mentioned that there aren't many Canadians there. In anticipation of your video I stumbled across a YT post last night from a Canadian named Kash who owns a real estate company there in LT and he posted from a Canadian owned bar on the beach at Playa Bonita named "One Love" that apparently is frequented by ex-pats. Maybe you can visit on your next trip!

Exactly - been watching some of his videos. You get an excellent view of the area, as on one vid he takes you on a drive thru the whole town area down to the end and pointed out that ship mall/hotel as well as many other spots. He also just gives great info aside from his realtor business. Tucked back in the Bonita beach area are some very exclusive properties. Anyway I did get hook on watching as it was -20 to -30 C here for the last week with nowhere to go

My father was the first foreigner to build a beach house in Las Terrenas in 1977 near where Punta Popy is. There were many Europeans visiting even then even though there was no electricity. My father was A Dane Bowen Jr. from Texas and he was Economics Officer at the U.S. Embassy at the time. He is mentioned in the Wiki entry for the town. I was 12 years old when we went over the Samana mountain on quite an adventure and rolled into the sleepy fishing village of Las Terrenas. The roads were not paved and electricity did not come to the village until many many years later. Our beach house which was built by my brothers and father, used rain water to flush toilets and shower and we had a small generator to use for a short period at night.
