      1. Akatsuki - Su stands there in a solo and just belts it out.
      2. No Rain No Rainbow - Su belts it out.
      3. GJ! with English subtitles - the song where Su takes a rest and Yui and Moa just tear it up.
      4. Baby Metal and Rob Halford from Judas Priest rip though Pain Killer and Breaking the Law (Yui and Moa play the guitar!) It's from an awards show.
      5. Rhondo of Nighmare with Mischiefs of God Intro - The band just kills it in the intro and then Su BELTS IT OUT

'Gimme Chocolate!!' may have the most CZcams views, but 'Megitsune' is the quintessential BABYMETAL song.
Also their most Japanese song, incorporating traditional festival chants, Japanese melodies, and dance moves.
The music video for this song is definitely worth watching as well.
    It has a few surprises. : )

You seem to struggle with their success. They have been in the business almost 10 years now and YES, they are successful, talented and have a very very strong fan base. Although Su and Moa are in BABYmetal, they are far from being children and are highly seasoned performers. Much like Rammstein they have also continued singing the majority of their music in their native language while still obtaining and expanding a world wide audience. That is virtually unheard of in music today. That aren't a flash in the pan or an oddity. They are the real deal and backed by just as equally talented musicians.

Lady Gaga personally asked them to open her shows back in 2014 (I think). Also, people who are not Japanese need to understand that Su, Yui and Moa had trained as Idols since they were very young girls (most probably from 5 or 6 years old) and that by the time they were accepted into Sakura Gakuin (which was on top of normal school), they were about 10 years old but had been performing for several years.
So while Doki Doki Morning was recorded when Su was 12, and Yiu and Moa were 11, they were literally "professionals" as Idols. The song was the project of one of their clubs in Sakura Gakuin (the metal club) and it literally "blew up" when it was released. This success was not considered odd or weird - it was the dream of every single girl who had trained to be an Idol. Su was particularly revered among the girls because BabyMetal was not her first successful Idol band.
People need to take a deep breath and then do some investigating before finding fault with the achievements of cultures different from their own.

  • @ktcworks
    @ktcworks Před 4 lety +11

The producer of the group taught girls the "Devil Horns" handsign then the girls started to have fun with "fox" handsign popular in Japan and devil sign lookalike. So "he" came with the idea to use fox aa their symbol. "Megitsune" means foxen and you can see that sign in many part of this song as well as other songs they perform.

  • @Zedem0n
    @Zedem0n Před 4 lety +23

Megitsune literally means "female fox" (Kitsune being the normal name for fox, 'me' for female, and K becomes G in Japanese grammar in that case). Not an expert but that's what I know about it :). Also, in BABYMETAL lore, the band has been called upon by the Fox God to lead the Metal Revolution/Resistance upon the world. The girls are chosen ones, the Kamis are the Gods of their instruments. The whole mystique behind BABYMETAL is one of the things that make the fans passionate about this band ;). And if you listen to enough BABYMETAL, you will realize that no two songs really sound alike. They're a band that transcends Metal in all its genre, subgenres, ironically doing so first and foremost by having associated two genres that didn't exist before : Kawai J-pop and Metal.
They cured my slowly fading-away fascination for metal. Welcome to the Fox Hole Drew ;)
Edit : They've toured with Korn, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Guns' n' Roses to name a few ! They've also broken a few records notably by Selling out the Tokyo Dome two nights in a row (55k TWICE) and playing a DIFFERENT setlist for both nights. They're currently touring the US on 20 dates and will do the same in Europe in february 2020 (book your tickets man - you wont regret it).

The deity guiding their fates is the Fox God hence the Fox references that they use all the time. And yes they are headling acts now. They have a US tour coming up in which they are the only act or the head act and another band opens. They are B-I-G now packing 20,000 to 55,000 seat stadiums on a regular basis. Thanks for the react. As for what to react to next here is my list:

Dammit Drew, of all the live versions you just HAD to pick the one with backing track instead of a live band :D
(this is early stuff, before Kami Band became permanent part of their performance. Su-metal sang live, but to a backing track).
The guitar sound you refer to is a pinch harmonic, a.k.a. artificial harmonic. It's a technique of striking the string while muting it at the same time... Very popular in metal tbh.
And yeah, The Fox God - it's a part of the whole narrative. You see, they are not throwing up the "devil horns" - it's a "fox's head" gesture ;) The whole thing is about the Babymetal being the disciples of the Fox God, sent to bring back the metal to the whole world (meaning spreading the thing, thus mixing it with pop genres to get through to the wider audience). If you look up their famous performance at Sonisphere in 2014, there's the whole visual intro before the first song that talks about it.
"Going down the fox hole" therefore refers to the people who are new to BM, going down the path which usually looks like this:
    1 - WTF is THAT?
2 - hmm... it's kinda catchy, and rocking at the same time...
    3 - OMG I am a fan now!
    Been there ;)
BTW - I have a challenge for you. React to the song "Machi Bhasad", by the band Bloodywood. And try not to mosh or headbang. I double dare you.

Well, as you already know... Babymetal is a japanese group (obvious) that´s the reason because there´s a lot of japanese folklore in Babymetal.
Yes, the fox are "sacred animals" in Japan, and guardians of the goddess Inari shrines. If you see the videoclip of this song, you can see a shrine with red "torii" forming a tunnel. This is pretty normal in Inari Shires, one of the biggest, the Fushimi Inari Taisha near Kyoto is called "The temple of thousand gates". The videoclip of Megistune have some shoots of an Inari Shrine in Tokyo, the Nezu Shine i think.
The fox max is... a toy. You can buy one for a very cheap price in most of summer festival "matsuri" in Japan. In a certain time, just before she gets the fox mask they are performing some dancing steps from a "Kagura Dance". A dance performed sometimes in shrines by the priestesses called in Japan "miko"
Maibe you can think that there´s an "excessive" presence of religious beliefs in this song, but really... no. In Japan shinto shrines are very abundant. Even very smalls one everywhere

The Japanese have over 1k gods in the pantheon, with the fox god being one of them. While the fox god is not one of the major gods, it is not a minor one either. The fox god is concidered a messenger, like Appolo in Greek mythology, but also looked on as being a bit like Loki, a trickster, but not so evil. The Fox god is the god that Babymetal worship, hence all the fox iconography. Also Megitsune means female fox, that's why the fox mask comes out in this song.

They play very big venues in Japan, such as the sold out 55k Tokyo Dome. In the US and Europe they are not that big. They did very nearly sell out the O2 arena in London, and will probably fit about 12k+ in their upcoming LA Forum show. Overall outside of Japan, they are a mid-level headline band playing shows that probably average about 3k in attendance.

Kitsune means fox, megitsune is a female fox as others have said, but it is also a creature out of Japanese folklore. The kitsune of stories is deceitful, and tricks unsuspecting men with their charms, and shape changes like a werewolf. Megitsune is also slang for a girl with makeup.
This song is about gender equality. Which Japan is bad at. They singing about having to wear a mask, and not being able to show their true selves. Another note is the opening melody which is also used in the break is from the song Sakura, Sakura, a beloved folk song hundreds of years old. It's like if someone shredded the Ave Maria or something.
A lot to unpack in this song. We are Kitsunes, and have seen us referred to the Kitsune army in the press. A kitsune is a generic term for fan with this band.

Megitsune = Female Fox ... basically, it is their signature song. The mythology behind the band (yep - there's a mythology) says that the Fox God summomed Su, Yiu, and Moa down to earth to found Kawaii Metal (Cute Metal) with the purpose of rejuvenating metal music which had grown stale and was under threat of irrelevence from other types of music. So, when someone is first introduced to BabyMetal, that's when you are on the verge of going down the Fox Hole. It also explains the hand sign - it is the sign of the Fox, not the normal metal sign.

you know what's funny? typically, band performances on any kind of talk show--late night or day time, even SNL-- the audiences are usually pretty...let's say laid back. not very involved and certainly not jumping up and down and actively cheering like at a concert. babymetal was on stephen colbert and the crowd was going fucking nuts. i've never seen that in my life (old footage of the beatles on sullivan aside)

Their whole gimmick is about the Fox god. Gimmick sounds bad but everything they do is around that. Their hand sign looks like they're doing the horns, but it's actually a bit different if you look. In interviews, instead of saying that they don't know or that they can't say they say "Only the Fox god knows." I enjoy their music.
