When The Yankees-Red Sox Rivalry Peaked

  • The Yankees-Red Sox rivalry goes back to 1919 when Babe Ruth was sold to the Yankees for $100,000. For the rest of the century, the Yankees were the best franchise in baseball while the Red Sox were a team of misfortunes plagued by the curse of the bambino. From the 1946 World Series to 1967 to Bucky Dent to Bill Buckner to the 1999 ALCS, the Yankees always found a way and the Red Sox didn't. But things changed after 2003 when Aaron Boone sent the Yankees to the World Series with a walk-off home run. The Red Sox would come back from a 3-0 deficit over the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS and would go on to win the World Series to break their curse. With the fights, hatred, and level of play, 2003-2004 was the absolute peak of the rivalry.

I was a big Red Sox fan since 1995. That was the year Mo Vaughn won the MVP and the Sox lost against the Indians in 3 games in the ALDS. But from then, I was hooked. This is the best rivalry in baseball, if not all of sports. Those two years in 2003-2004 were peak as you said. I've been a Red Sox fan since I was 5. In 1994 I moved to the Seattle area and in 1995 the Mariners had a magical season that I got completely engulfed in. When Boston came to town I was so excited to see the Sox play. I stood outside the Kingdome to get MO's autograph. When they came out to get in their bus they were in a single file line and I saw Mo. I had my Red Sox baseball and asked him to sign my ball. He shook his head no and I was bumbed out bad. Down the line I saw Jose' Conseco and he gladly signed my ball. I thought that was cool, but I wanted Mo Vaughn's. It was bittersweet but I still have that Conseco ball!

I was 8 in 2004, so there was definitely sadness in our house the night the Red Sox won the World Series. I agree with the other commenters that it just feels like tradition now for the teams to face off against each other these days. Hopefully the Yankees can actually win a World Series sometime soon, since it'll have been 15 years since their last win this year. They haven't won since their first year in the new ballpark in 2009.

I desperately miss the dynasties that occurred in the seventies, seemingly the last time baseball had competitive disparity amongst its teams. Players of course deserved the chunk of prophets that they finally ended up wirh via free agency, but it did deeply harm competition.
Teens that once held an edge because of dynamic farm systems and amazing scouts, instructetd, & managers.
Dynastys play the Oakland Athletics Cincinnati Reds and Baltimore Orioles wouldn't be possible in the same way today.
The Orioles for incense of the amazing job drafting and developing players, putting themselves in an enviable position to have perhaps the top catcher in the game and Addley Ruschtman, top five hitter Gunnar Henderson, Kjersyad, Coswer, Holiday, Mayo, etc etc. instead of this becoming a phenomenal base for the next decade and a half, the team is now forced to pick two or three of them to try to sign, while the rest will have to be traded away after three or four years of service.
There is a reason the NFL out competes Major League Baseball in every possible way. Almost every single NFL game is competitive, as is every season, I'm nearly every team. When there is a quarter million dollar difference between the highest salary team and lowest is impossible to fool yourself into believing there is a competitive balance, leading to BOREDOM.
Worse, if your team like the Orioles has a plethora of amazing prospects in its system, the only thing you can be guaranteed of is a year or two of Major League success to one degree or another, unless you have an azing owner

The only thing good for the Yanks after 2004 was to break the curse the Red Sox became the Yankees and did everything from 2004 to 2011 that fans used to complain about Yankees. They sold out and the rivalry is no longer their after 2011.

a lot of people dont know this but Babe Ruth was seen as a black man by most of the league. A lot of players were super racist to him. Like even though he was Babe Ruth. Theres a lot of pictures of him in a suit in the stands with no one around him and thats because of the racism of the time.
