The Holy Spirit in the Life of Catholics - Jeff Cavins

  • Though raised Catholic, Jeff Cavins didn't really "get" the idea of the Holy Spirit until an experience at a Catholic Charismatic conference when he was 18. In his youthful zeal, he decided that the Church he'd grown up in was stifling the Holy Spirit, so he started going to the Assemblies of God, and eventually became a nondenominational pastor. Along the way, his understanding of the Holy Spirit matured, and he eventually came to appreciate the Holy Spirit as not just someone who empowered him personally, but who was perpetually at work in Scripture, tradition, the magisterium and the lives of the saints.

I will admit that I have always been nervous speaking to the Holy Spirit, mainly for fear of the unforgivable sin of blasphemy against Him. Also, I always go through Christ as we are told to, since the Spirit is also God, I figured that He works through His own ways and being that He is God, He knows best for me or anyone and anything else.

I got baptised in the Holy Spirit and began to speak in an unknown language.
When I came back to the Catholic church, exorsists said, "If you haven't learnt a language, it's of Satan.
That tongues are what the apostles were given, and the Holy Spirit guided them in their speech.
I am confused. I don't speak in tongues anymore and haven't in a long time.
I don't want to be disobedient to God by offending the Holy Spirit. I don't know if the language I was praying in is from God or the devil. Can you help,
I did have oppressive spirits. I was delivered from it, but I still can speak in an unknown language ,I choose not to for fear of sinning against God. He has been so good to me.

Your comment made me sorrowful. It is truly a gift from God, receiving your prayer language. “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself” (1 Corinthians 14:4) Also, read Luke 11:9-13. Lord bless and keep you.

A Jewish convert to Catholicism had a vision of Our Lady. He asked Her who the Holy Spirit was. Lifting her gaze to Heaven in adoration, She said:
    “He is HIS gaze”
This would a align with what St Thomas of Aquinas said, that the Holy Spirt was “The look of love between the Father and the Son”.

Who is the Holy Spirit? But the first big question is WHO IS INSIDE JESUS ? Well, we are absolutely sure that THE FATHER IS INSIDE JESUS AND LEADS HIM VERY TIGHTLY when speaking and acting :
    (1)
"Truly, truly I say to you, THE SON IS NOT ABLE TO DO ANYTHING of himself,45 but ONLY WHAT HE SEES THE FATHER DOING; for whatever things that One does, THESE THINGS ALSO THE SON DOES LIKEWISE.
    (2)
"When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will find out that I am he,
and OF MYSELF I DO NOTHING, but rather EXACTLY AS THE FATHER HAS TAUGHT ME, THOSE THINGS I SPEAK. 29And the one who sent me IS CONTINUALLY WITH ME. HE HAS NOT LEFT ME ALONE, because I always do the things pleasing to him."
    (3)
"49 FOR I FROM MYSELF HAVE NOT SPOKEN; rather, the Father who sent me, he has given me COMMANDMENT, WHAT I SHOULD SAY, and HOW I SHOULD SPEAK. 50And I know, that his commandment means eternal life. Therefore, WHAT THINGS I SPEAK, JUST AS THE FATHER HAS SAID THEM TO ME, I SPEAK THEM JUST SO."
    (4)
"The statements which I say to you I do NOT SPEAK FROM MYSELF, BUT THE FATHER ABIDING IN ME IS DOING HIS WORKS."
    ..........
Could Jesus further have a SECOND LEADER, "the Lord giver of life" - to lead Him - even if only a few times? Of course THERE IS NO PLACE LEFT FOR THAT: from the above verses we see that Jesus IS LED VERY CLOSELY ("exactly") by the Father, who is "continually" "abiding" in Him. That no one else is there is also implicitly stated : "...He has not left me ALONE..." i.e. you just have the Father with the Son, period.
But how can one explain the next verse, Jesus being filled and led by the Holy Spirit?
    (5) "FILLED with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from Jordan and was LED BY THE SPIRIT into the wilderness.".....
Well, with the verses (1)-(4) Jesus reveals that the HOLY SPIRIT inside Him IS THE FATHER. This directly implies that the Father must be a spirit. Yes, you can find confirmation that the Father is a spirit: "God is a spirit". Not only in Jesus, exactly the same kind of relief - by the Father - when speaking - also occurs inside the apostles: "because it is not ye that will speak, but the SPIRIT OF YOUR FATHER...". However, you can notice there that the term "SPIRIT" is used instead.
Well, confusion arises because Jesus has the "Father who is a spirit" and calls Him sometimes "FATHER" (Holy) (generally when Himself is concerned), sometimes "SPIRIT" (Holy, of God, of the Father...) when other people are concerned (see the apostles above). But they are just TWO NAMES for the SAME ONE SPIRIT: THE FATHER. No further "omnipotent spirit Lord giver of life" exists: it's just an invention. The Holy Spirit is thus the almighty God: for example the Devil could be INSIDE you, trying - UNNOTICED as much as possible - to steer your mind and to convince you do something. Well, God is no less, He is able to perform that action too! "The HOLY SPIRIT dwelling in you" simply means that God is inside you, trying to lead you.
Thus, "blasphemy against the Holy Spirit" is SYNONYM of "blasphemy against the Father". No one has been FORGOTTEN there: just TWO blasphemies are possible, one against the Father and one against the Son! This also means that when Jesus was baptized, simply the Holy Spirit - i.e. the Father who is a spirit - SAID "...you are my beloved Son...". Just the Father and the Son were there, TWO ! No one else exists, this is stated by Jesus: "I am not ALONE because the Father is with me".
The Father is now ONLY ACTIVE in His "Spirit form" (see for example the Holy Spirit and Mary's pregnancy), but He also existed in His "normal form" (see "the Father" in the baptismal formula). God existed in that "normal form" ONLY "...before the existence of the world" (Jn. 17:5,24). Therefore "Righteous Father, the world HAS NOT KNOWN you..."; this is also why "No one has ever seen God..." and why Jesus inherited the kingdom of God "The Father loves the Son and has given him all things into his hand." . Only God who dwells in that remote past makes God's decisions, He is the SOURCE of the "Spirit of God". The Spirit of God proceeds from the Father dwelling in that past and acts here. But He is just a God's ATTRIBUTE, not someone else. God is thus only made by the Father and the Son.

No JW. JESUS IS ONLY WITH THE FATHER. I.e. no trinity exists. For ex. " Yet, I am not ALONE because the Father is with me." I.e. just Father and Son.

Jesus Said..in Matthew 5 6 7.. "Obey My Sayings and Seek Me and My Righteousness..I will Give you Everything You Need..and Deliver You from evil.". To me Jesus is the Holy Spirit. I have been listening to Jesus and talking to Him all my life..since I was six years old. I Seek Him For His Help EveryDay. It is too bad the Catholics didn't teach you Jesus Gospel. I tried praying to Mary once..Jesus reprimanded me. And Jesus wants me to listen to Him..not pastors in Any church. I seem to have a very different relationship with Jesus from other people..because people get angry with me..when I explain. Someone suggested I was a Jew..but I do not know. I just Listen and Obey and when I don't..I suffer.

Not all charities are made equal and not all times call us to this or that form of charity. Giving someone money they will then go spend on an abortion is quite obviously not charitable. However, you can not know their thoughts unless they tell you them. The Lord has no such restrictions and thus we ought to listen. Likewise, I personally have given to the point where I then needed aid and becane a burden to others. Prudence and temperance are likewise required and for the soul that has not developed them sufficiently, awaiting the calling of the Holy Spirit is perhaps the first step in prudence and likewise humility. We are also called to listen for His call, so that is what I do especially in this rapidly changing and at times shockingly disordered world.

I’ve met better Christian Baptists and Pentecostals(which are a little crazy for my liking) than Catholics. You better watch out. I’ve met nicer atheists that have more self control than Catholics.
