There's two interpretations for the chicken scene.
One, there was a tradition in China where, when a man and a woman wanted to get married, they gift a rooster and a hen. So it's like a marriage proposal. Wei Ying and Lan Zhan are both guys, so instead, he gave him two roosters. Basically, he's trying to propose.
Two, when Wei Ying was still in Cloud Recesses, he and Jiang Cheng and a bunch of others went out to steal chickens for some meat because they got tired of the vegetarian bland meals. Wei Ying invited Lan Zhan, but he refused to go. Now, he wants to do all these things with Wei Ying, including going out to steal chickens apparently.

Even though this scene is quite different in the novel I like this one too. LWJ steals jujube fruits along with the chickens. They take chicken and fruits with them. It was Lan Zhan who asks Wei Ying to write too. And LWJ also draws two people kissing and other things which WWX told him about in Lotus Pier. There is a lot that happens after drunk Lan Zhan stealing. The two end up in two different rooms. Both of them can't sleep. WWX runs out to erase what the two had written.
