Coming in to correct something in the video! I claim that JJK0 was dubbed by Crunchyroll but that is incorrect, it was only distributed by them and was dubbed by Studiopolis. The point that $150 is a horrible pay still stands, there's just two garbage companies instead of one!

The dub was significantly better than I’m used to in other shows. To the point where it felt wrong watching the sub with a buddy a week later.

150 Dollar isn't a horrible pay Rika barely talked in the Anime (At most took an hour to do), The problem for Voice Actors is just that it isn't meant as a full time job. 150 Dollars for an hour isn't even imaginable for most workers

@@golden5766 if the wages were truly not livable there would be no voice actors. The companies have every right and incentive to keep costs down. And labor is the largest cost.
It is a choice to work contract instead of salary/wage. If you work contract you sacrifice wage protections guaranteed under ERISA.
This living wage bull is just that....bull. If they're getting 75 an hour that is a fantastic contractual fee. Most salaried workers where I live don't make more than 50 an hour and that is plenty to live on. If they aren't getting enough hours then ask for more or get a second job. At 75 an hour working a no overtime work year that amounts to 150,000 a year for 2000 hours. If you can't pay for your own health insurance and a decent mortgage with that then you can't manage money.

@@golden5766 of they only worked 2 hours in that movie they shouldn't be getting all that much. And if they signed the contract they need to honor it.
I'm sorry but 75 is not underpaid. And if they can't find more hours than a couple a week get another job and do this as a hobby. Many people do what they love as hobbies or side hustles because they know they can't make a career out of it.
This is contractual work which is generally significantly different from being an employee. The rules are different. As an independent contractor, you are your own business and therefore responsible for when you work, what jobs you take, paying your own benefits and taxes, etc. It works differently for an employee in which the business determines your hours, which projects you do, your benefits (unless a very small company) and taxes.
Why should a company pay benefits to a freelancer who might do a job there for a month and then work somewhere else the next month and so on? That would be a ridiculous cost increase for the company.
We have to stop letting emotion rule and look at all the factors and variables. And it all comes down to choice. The person makes the choice to accept or not.

On top of that the argument falls apart even harder when you look at Hollywood where actors can give a half assed performance and still get paid millions just for having their name in the credits

@@AsarathaHSYT they are getting what 75 an hour? Even 35 an hour is pretty decent. Maybe they can take on more roles so they work 30-40 hours a week.
And living wage? That's such an emotional appeal of utter bull. So Seattle in their perfect wisdom throws down a $15 minimum wage and all the fast food joints buy kiosks and get rid of their employees. Brilliant for the mega corps. Hilarious unintended consequences for students and other people getting a bit of work experience. And of course it gave the mega corps a reason to raise prices because their biggest or second biggest cost increased. And I'm sure those union execs were just salivating at demanding a proportional wage increase for all the other employees.
Wages forced up by non-market external forces drive costs up for business who have to raise prices to compensate which then makes the lowest wages supposedly untenable again. Rinse and repeat. And screw everyone over.
Unions have become a poison on the workforce and economy.
No matter how much you love something you have to put in the work. If you're only doing 2 hours a week you're not putting in the work. And if you're getting 75 an hour and working a regular schedule you're making more than half the country. And you can pay for your own health insurance at that contractual fee.
That's one of the differences between an employee and an independent contractor. An IC is his/her own business and should pay his/her own benefits while the company (if large enough) provides benefits to its employees. California may have some screwy exceptions.
There are so many caria variables such as worker's compensation insurance which in many states also covers independent contractors (more relevant in dangerous jobs and where the IC doesn't carry self-insurance for the same). Also where the jobs are done (union versus right to work state like Texas). And location may mean much lower or higher cost of living as it is.
Every person can negotiate for higher pay, residuals, certain benefits, etc. However some may change the IC into an employee and if the IC doesn't want that then they must sacrifice. That's the nature of the choices we make. If they want higher pay or more hours search elsewhere or find a job in another field and do this as a hobby in your spare time.
I don't feel sympathy for people making that much an hour. Sorry. I had plenty of tax seasons when I started my career where I worked 70 or 80+ hour weeks. It sucked but it was part of what I agreed to. Now I have a job with much better hours and the pay is enough where I'm pretty happy. You make your choices and then work to improve. Sometimes you run into walls, other times luck or opportunity carries you past. But this sob story over 75 an hour is ridiculous.

I'm also not a huge dub fan but as some who loves art or anything in the creative field, voice actors deserve recognition, love and praise. Honestly, their work still leaves me in awe: the emotions they need to convey in a VOICE alone, their performances done well to not lose the emotion/feeling of the original source, the tonal differentiation of certain voices actors (to the point I find it hard to believe they're the same person. It's pure genius and artistic talent). These are skills that deserves to be paid what they are worth. It hurts to think the one streaming service I thought would acc be helpful is doing the opposite. I do hope that in the future all of this gets improved.

Modern dubs are on par or better than the Japanese version, it’s now just some sort of weird anime elitism that favours Japanese sub.
Where fans will judge the English version much more harshly because they understand the language, they know the accents, they know the cadences of the words. With Japanese they understand nothing, it’s just a sound and they couldn’t tell the difference between an accent from one province from another. The languages are so different in pitch, tone & cadence that most people haven’t got a clue what they’re listening to.
You’ll constantly hear people say “I just hear the emotions in their voices more”, and that’s just the kind of language that it is. You’ll often see them just shouting at each other having a normal conversation haha.

It's not because they aren't skilled and hardworking or worse than younger ones, it's because they push themselves into a passion and rarely see the fruits of it. Actors are some of the most hard working and passionate people on this planet, because they know dedication, and are so often taken advantage of.

Dub for me is what determines if I’m going to watch an unknown anime. Same with movies in general. I know the content is good but I can’t invest hours on reading the text. Usually watch media by hearing while at times giving a couple of glances, while doing else at the same time. So I think AI should be invested and push more to do the voiceovers from translating original voices/text. This would avoid from keeping an industry that is simply not going to grow enough to satisfy the demand.

I grew up watching dubs. They are what got me into anime. The 4kids dub of One Piece was garbage and the Funimation dub is much better but if it wasn't for that 4kids dub I might never have gotten into One Piece.
Same with so many other anime that I can barely count. Sure if a dub is extremely bad or a sub is just really good then I would go for the sub, like Attack on Titan having a decent dub but an amazing sub. But honestly most of the anime I watch is dubbed. I'm not biased one way or the other, I just like good acting.
