- High Winds broke the top out of a maple tree across from the livestock barn. So I need to cut it up into firewood and clean up the brush. Then I have a couple of small jobs I need to take care. Just another day on the homestead.

We live in southeastern Illinois on a 41 acres homestead. We just finished building our log cabin overlooking our pond. We are trying to grow our own food and raise livestock. Follow us on our journey living the rural life and developing our property and becoming more self sufficient.
Try spreading some corn in the areas you want the pigs to clean up.. It will give them an incentive to work those areas..
Don't need a grapple for tractor on a farm, its also called skidding, u take the whole entire tree and hook Chain to tree pull tree to ur "brush landing spot" this is where u skin all branches off the tree and then u pull log to ur "log plie landing spot, cut up ur firewood and the process is complete. This technique worked for many years for plenty of farmers and many of them still use this exact technique today...
The goats would have destroyed all evidence of that vine if you’d give them the chance.
I had a similar size tree drop last month. My three goats ate all the leaves from it within two day.
What a great idea 💡 👏
Goats would love those branches
You might think about putting your well on solar power and save on the power bill each month.
We as a nation are blessed to have the freedom we enjoy, there is no other nation like ours. The 4th is a celebration of independence from oppression .we cannot let it slip away Merica 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Yeah blah blah, I'd rather live in Europe where I live now, where I dont have to worry so much about school shootings and medical bills.
Have you ever traveled anywhere else? Seriously.
Why not use the pond as a source of water for your garden? I bet the goats would have loved a couple of maple branches
Agree, fish water is great for plants! The Veggie Boys use pond water to irrigate many acres of plants.
Scout, "Come on. Gimme one. Those steaks look really good." Three months, three weeks and three days and you're up to your eyeballs with little piglets.
"i bet i could trip him and get one of those steaks"
The dogs won the race.👍
Never hose down your onions, potatoes or garlic. They will rot instead of just drying!
Btw your goats will love eating the poison ivy.
No steak for you Scout🐕...Scout sounds like Byeden..."AGHH COME ON MAN !"😂🤣🤣👍✌🇺🇸
Happy 4th of July, Yes the Well should pay it self off quickly. But the fish water from the pond would be great for the garden....
Nice to see you wearing your gear when using the chainsaw.
Nice harvest of garlic, I'm glad you didn't wash it off that promotes disease. Save your biggest ones for planting this fall. We just dug 131 bulbs this morning. Have a great 4th everyone.
🦅🇺🇸.....Happy Independence Day everyone! LET FREEDOM RING THROUGHOUT OUR LAND!!! 🦅🇺🇸
You got your own style and that's one of the raisons why your video are so interesting.;follow this way and i will follow you.👍👍👍
Enjoy the 4th of July weekend!
I'm new to your channel and I like it
You are like an Energizer bunny. Enjoy it while you can and take advantage of it, I turned 50 last year and I still get after it, but I can feel the effects of a good days work a lot more than I used to. I also need to take a few more breaks than I'd like now.
turn 62 this year and a bad car wreck last year(feb) icu for 3 days and am also feeling the effects of working on the farm more, just have to go a little slower and keep at it longer
Just wait until you're 69, in my fifties I was going like a 20 year old but stuff happens. I still try but it's an effort. Take care of yourself and hope for the best.
@@JamesCouch777 my dad is 88, moving on to 89. You've got to keep moving.
I have rainwater catchment for my main barn, my goat barn, and my chicken coop.
Some pre flush & screens & barrels & pipe & FREE Water
Could do a cistern from an off grid 12 0r 24 v solar well pump to pump only during the day & ferry the water or pump to a DIY water tower and have it run to needed places with a bit of planning. Possible to dig swales to capture water into small ponds given gradient in places where its needed. Sweat equity vs paying the grid for another bill.
Hope y'all have a Great 4th.
By the way, wallow sounds funny. Waller. Hog waller. That's how I've always heard and said it. But then again, I grew up in Arkansas.😊🐖
The “Lightsaber” of the outdoor world. What would we do without them?
Smaller the pieces the more pieces you have to handle cleaning up just a thought!
I think I know Evan's winter project for the shop: a nice big work bench so he doesn't have to use a table saw to repair things! Hopefully lumber will be back at a sane price by then.😊
Scout says you don't have to wait 5 minutes for him. He will eat them now. I like how you reuse old things with new things. The old farm equipment with your new tractor 🚜. I know it's frustrating waiting on things you order, but good things come to those who wait. You will enjoy using that new grapple more when it comes.
Thanks for making these videos and sharing your family.
The favourite part was the pigs, oh they look so happy, and they also seem to like following you around! We had a friend who bought big IBC 1000litres plastic tubs, and he cut the top of them and put them under the barn and house gutters, and use them to water his garden and animals with, every downpour he gets free water that they all can enjoy and use, maybe it might be a good idea for you as well since it seems to get rained onto your place now and then?
I was surprised you didn't take the maple branches from the limb and give them to the goats!
Maybe solar pump might be good on well
I was going to say that. eBay sells solar pump kits including a panel. Really cheap as they are copies of expensive pumps. Though it does depend on the depth of the well.
Always to rewatch these videos. And steak as a reward. ! 👍👍👍
I enjoy your video..very good content..I especially like your knowledge if how things work, and how to repair them..I look forward to your videos..starting to become my favorite..keep up the good work.
In terms of the garlic, just brush it off really well. If you could hang it up on a tree and let it dry in humid weather that would dry it. Great work on the chainsaw and the animals. Take care.
Please take the leafy small limbs to the goats... they love them.
It's really torture, when you have to wear all that stuff
when it's warm.
But safety first! 😊👍🏻
seams like i do most of our laundry course my clothes are always greasy and dirty , pick up a pole saw to do the trimming so you don't have to get into the ivy and prickly stuff. my wife loves to ride with me out in the pasture when i go by myself i always try to bring her some pasture flowers or something fun back (even a story of the road runner or wild turkeys ). Have Fun and don't get too hot out their
Best video yet!! Great job. Just being yourself and enjoying life.
The Maple tree wood would make good wood to use in your smoker for pork and or chickens good flavor....
I really enjoy your videos. You can d o anything. Bless you and wife.
It's nice to watch people with all the right equipment use it and enjoy the good life
I don't know why but this video is one my favourite of yours wish could give you a double like :)
I really like this video. Your Miss Piggy is getting some hefty hams on her. (Mine I blame on Covid) Scout is a beautiful boy! Hi Rebekah, hope that Evan washed all the poison ivy off.
I did, too! Has more animal footage! I think many viewers prefer the day to day care of animals!
A Serious 1 hour walk all around this farm would be great. Seeing it from different angles and just seeing everything from the plants to the beginning of your drive way.
Like the video Evan and you got water every were the roof the pond and the old well.
Now that's a really good one! 28 minutes of fun. Thank you!
Have you thought about putting in some shallow ground water wells to water the animals and the garden? You could put them close to where you need them and power the pumps with a portable generator or even solar panels. There are videos on how to drill them yourself using PVC pipe and homemade mud boxes. Might be a good project after fall harvest when working is cooler.
Windmill maybe? Go oldschool on powering it, maybe even pump into a tank or cistern.
@@Sigurther Good idea. Maybe pump it up into a water tower. Just an IPC tote on stilts.
Absolutely love you guys... you deserve so many more subscribers... Hope they start coming!
You are going to love the grapple when you get it. I use mine weekly.
Great job, I have the same 4 wheeler but I use a golf cart with a dump bed more. Happy independence day to you and Rebecca..
Have you thought about investing in a chipper? With your amount of trees that need maintenance you would always have a good source of mulch.
Nice to see the rest if the pig area. I like these smaller detailed walks you do on your property every now n then, glad I found this channel. And look forward to seeing the new uploads
You mentioned using an old well to water cattle - makes total sense as you have water on site. As you will need power to pump it back to site, apart from filters, throw in a strong UV light to disable pathogens (and get it tested) . With the right setup you could be water self sufficient. ( I grew up in farming area where the water main was “off grid” and after various solutions good filters + strong UV cleared up drinking water for community ). Seek professional advice, but you could save $$ here.
I've read that some people build a concrete wallow for their pigs basically a shallow concrete pool that they can wade into on hot days
Hi...... Evan nice to see you love watching your videos, thank you for showing your video homestead chicken Duck Goose farmer garden 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 👕🐔🐓🐥🐕🐈🐖🐐🐄🐠🌱🏡🎥👍👍👍
Great video Evan I loved it thumbs up my friend!
Great idea using the well for the farm👍
Time to let the 🐐 clean up the 🐖 pen.
Good job Evan way to be with the safety gear. Your folks must be good hard working examples.
Before running power to well how about checking we’ll with a general to see if we’ll still good
Might want to invest in a few T post and combination stock panels and make a temporary enclosure for goats around your brush or vine patches you want cleared out....you can use UV RESISTANT ZIP TIES TO ATTACH THE PANELS TO THE T POAST
Thanks for sharing with us Evan and Rebecca, looking good around there. Have a great weekend and stay safe. Fred.🙏🏻🙏🏻👍👍👏🏻👏🏻👋👋
When cooking steak about 1 &1/2 minutes per side and that's for a 1 inch cut.. they'll continue to cook for about 5 minutes after taking them off the grill especially if you have a cover to place over them to hold the heat in..
Consider a wind powered pump into a water tower
Evan why don't you pump water from the pond for the animals? Great video Evan!
Hey Evan I’d use the pole barn roof for water collection you would be surprised how much water you could get plenty for the garden
"Now who needs a bath, Mr. Pig Farmer?" Lol
Evan look into a wind mill pump for the dug well and a storage tank
Pallet forks work awesome for moving brush
That work bench looked a lot like a table saw.
Pump water from your pond to your vegetable garden
Try a solar powered well pump and a tarp over the areas you want the pigs to clear
Are your ducks liking the pond?
Yep goats love them leaves on branches, free feed!
Steaks look great. Crazy pigs. Hahaha.
Also any fruit or nut trees make good wood to smoke meat in...apple, cherry, hickory, pecan, even walnut..
Good looking hogs. We use to use ginger snap cookies as a treat for moving where we wanted them to on the farm.
In addition to a rain water catchment, you should think about a ram pump for the summers. Pump up to the highest elevation and gravity feed to the places needed.
Great video! I agree saving on the water bill, use the pond water for the garden ! Pigs are cute 🐷 much better for Scout! Enjoy the 4th🇺🇸
He’s scratching his back on your fence and I can almost hear him say”ahhhhhh”.
I like your idea of getting the well working, possibly using solar power to run the pump, wouldn't cost much to get a small solar panel set up, pay for itself the first year.
Looks like a great place for a trellis and some grape vines.
Hope your grapple comes in soon, great tool to have 👍
Thanks Evan ,you folks have a great 4th of July and thank for the update.
Take care be safe
You should marinate the steak overnight in Italian dressing, or make a garlic butter sauce to dip it in. Try it, you'll thank me. Enjoy.
Homestead looks great! Happy for your family!
You could use the run-off from your pole-barn for the garden and maybe the animals. At least the wallow for the pigs.
The work is never ending isn’t it!
Yeah, that was poison ivy right in front of your wood pile. "Leaves of three, let it be." I remember seeing some on the entrance of your field once, too, a few videos ago. Just the other side of your dam in the woods. Yeah, I have had a few issues with it over the years. It gets my attention. Lol. Have a good holiday weekend.
Good video, how’s the garden doing. I ‘m glad you got Sydney taken care of .And the pigs are getting big .Everything looks good, God bless.
Your Goats would love the leaves.
Thank you for sharing.
all that brush is not for burning its very good goat food
I was really surprised to hear you don’t have a well.
You have enough roof around try collecting rain water
Lots of branches for the goats to chew on.
thx again
Good video have a good night.
Happy Forth of July!
something I saw on another youtube channel a long time ago, they put the goats with the pigs to clean everything
Steaks looked good. We’re they from the cows you raised? We recently went in with friends and purchased a cow. We get the meat delivered next Saturday. Looking forward to eating some locally grown beef!
Water problem - what about a few rain catches ? One large one at the pigs, one smaller one to catch rain off the animal barn.
Ty for the video!
