The Nikon Df is a modern full-frame 16.2MP camera with the same sensor and processor as the top of the line D4, but with a retro design and a lower price point, it's sure to attract new photographers and long time shooters...

I started shooting in 1992 with a Nikon FM2n with Fuji Velvia 50 for landscapes. I used low end Nikon digital cameras from 2004. Last year when I saw the Nikon Df, I bought one finally. I'm pleased with the results and I still feel that I'm learning to walk again. The old retro look was what attracted me in first place but also the new 21st Century features of the Nikon Df. Thanks so much for sharing!
I've bought the Df and absolutely love it. I have a number of the great Ai manual lenses and they work perfectly on the Df to complete the retro experience. I think you have to be "of an age' to fully appreciate the camera otherwise stay with the cookie cutter modern digital camera an stop trashing the Df experience.
Ditto.
This camera looks awesome, reminds me of my moms old FE2 in the 80s
Omar. Agree it's a good looking camera. I have the Nikon D800, if not and the price was lower could be interested in this one; if it had video mode.
Many thanks again! what an incredible dissection of pros and cons of the Nikon Df.. Amazing indeed!
Watching this in 2022 to refresh memory on Df setting. Df is the only DSLR sits next to a dozen mirrorless bodies on my shelf. It is still a great camera t today and I imagine it will continues to be with me after all those mirrorless are replaced years from now.
Very nice camera. Certainly not meant for everyone's photographic needs or budget, but definitely does have extremely capable strong points. And as of the time of posting of this comment, it was added this past week to the list of supported cameras in the latest updated versions of Adobe's Photoshop Elements 12, Lightroom 5, and Photoshop CS 6 (Adobe's saying on their website that this will be the last Camera Raw update for Photoshop CS6 users w/ operating systems older than Windows 7 and Mac OSX 10.7 (Lion) ). If you're thinking about buying that not-quite-released-yet new camera later in the year and post processing raw files is important to you, update your older operating systems.
Adobe updated so, yes, ACR and Lightroom will work now! As well as the 1 AW1, Coolpix P7800, D610, and D5300.
Good job on the overview Larry.
It hits some of the plus and minuses of the Df unit. As a recent owner there is a lot to be happy with. The con's are minor. What no one is talking about as much is the pure joy of shooting and the quality of the imagery. The light weight and size makes it very comfortable on a long shoot day. I sold my D3s for this camera and I am not looking back.
A Nikon DF mirrorless with an EVF would be perfect for me.
You may want to give Olympus OM-D E-M5 a shot... yes, it's not FF, I know. But it gives decent quality pictures.
"Low light and noise reduction is QUITE good"? I thought the D4 sensor was supposed to be superb in this dept....
On my wish list, I will get one. Not just any time soon. But I will..
I like how he is touting the no video flaw as if it's a feature! It's a nice camera but for most photographers I think functionality/price trumps "looking retro". The biggest dealbreaker aside from video for me is only having one memory card slot and no CLS abilities. Flash is not just for low light settings but to get rid of harsh shadows under the eyes.
Lightroom, I saw my update on Saturday 12/14/13
Nearly $3,000 with a 50mm kit lens. WOW!!
Ah, I think he was referring to the lens.
Memory card slot in the Bottom of the camera. WTF
Jarh.. I use all my old Nikon lenses on D600 - sweetly.
nice camera but not worth the buy in my eyes, if you really want they "retro styled film feel" just go buy a film camera.
Film is Out, get with the Program!
Beauty without brain. DF Digital Failure
High price, no video capture, Other Nikons cheaper, and do more.
No video, that's really a bad move from Nikon....
I don't think so .. get a D800 if you want video. Or better .. get a camcorder :)
Yeah I don't get some choices. First off, even their cheap offerings have a 24mp sensor, but this is 16 mp...and all their cheap cameras do video, there is nothing physically preventing this one from doing it as well, especially at a $3k price point. It doesn't make sense.
gidigida D800 is not the same camera type. If Nikon wants to enter mirrorless game, they need to be serious and to offer the full package, not just a toy with big missing feature. Maybe they just want to add video on the next version to make customers pay twice, which would be even worse. So for me this camera is too expensive and lacks features. Think I will go A7 instead.
sskkmm2222 Well the market is divided into two segments; there is the people who buy DSLRs for photography, and there's those who buy them for video. Obviously, this is not for the later. It is not 'missing' a feature .. because it is not designed to serve videographers. Nikon offers good options for videographers .. but don't forget that the DF is not mirrorless .. after all it is a full DSLR :)
Its a camera, and doesn't conform to the norm. That's an awesome feature of it.
Digital conFusion Hahahaha
Nikon's future looks very bad
