    🔷 ABOUT US 🔷
We're a DIY family building our "forever homestead" from 15 acres of raw undeveloped land in Tennessee. All of our content is family friendly and safe for everyone to enjoy.
We are continuing to work on digging our trench for our power or electrical service entrance to be run. We hit rock in our last video and in this video we use a concrete breaker or hydraulic jack hammer to bust through the shale / slate rock and reach our target depth. Our electrical service is underground and will be high voltage until it reaches our transformer box pad. Afterwards, it will be 240 volt standard residential electric and need to be in a three foot trench. Let's go!

Are yall adding a heat pump? I just wondered I'm fixing to replace mine and I ordered it from www.budgetheating.com/ and it saved me a ton. I've got a friend going to do my replacement for me. If I'd of ordered it like 8 months ago would of saved me over a grande but I still bought a two piece unit. 3.5 ton shipped for 3860.00 If I had a heat pump company install one of theirs it would of been from 7 to 10 grande for the unit and install. My friend is licensed in all electical and hvac so he's going to install it free but I'm going to pay him probably around a grande or more. I'll still have less than 5 k in a brand new heat pump that's more effecient etc. Good luck guys. I'm also in East Tn. I'd be glad to help yall for a day or two if I know where to come and help for free.

Great video. Glad you got the jackhammer attachment. Also glad you didn't choose an off grid system. Every off grid system I've seen involves power rationing, and a reduction in the standard of living. Basically, giving up modern conveniences to some extent. Off grid systems just can't cut it. The best system is a grid tied system with battery or generator backup.

It is my pleasure to be able to watch your wonderful real content!! I am so sorry you all have had this much trouble. It is so difficult now, but the hardest part will be in the rearview mirror very soon. Question: Sam, I remember you said you were able to purchase your solar panels used. I am wondering if this was a rare opportunity you found or is there a store or location I can purchase them from? I have tried looking it up several times with no luck. Any info would be very appreciated. God Bless you & the boys

On the other hand most of the wires in the area are overhead anyway, so probably not as much of a difference. By now they're well past the point of no return for burying the line though, it would be a tremendous waste to fill the trench back in and go for poles and overhead wires.

My two cents - out of the hundreds of projects I’ve watched you two tackle and complete, this one is the first that hasn’t gone as planned. But you HAVE made progress! The trench not the problem, it’s that d@mm shale. I hope you get a bucket to finish trenching it.
And I would’ve made same decision as you going underground. It was the right choice. No way anyone could have predicted that rock.
Yeah, it turned out not to be most economical way but without a crystal ball, you couldn’t have known!
Take a deep breath! You’re almost done with this beast of a project! 👏🏼💛

It's always best to put electric meters on poles instead of the house, so I'm glad you are going that route. When they are on the house, it makes it impossible to properly repair siding, and it's a hassle.

Nice work with the excavator! Don't let the job get you down. About 23 years ago my late wife and I built a partially exposed basement for a modular home. We were lucky enough to secure the services of an old-timer with a huge excavator at very reasonable rates. Welcome to the land of churt and shale! By the time our basement hole and all of the utility trenches were dug, everything stood like solid walls of stacked shale. With a lot of crushed stone and french drains in the backfill, it drained like a dream. Bone-dry basement. I'm looking forward to your finished product, and I know it will prove your penchant for doing it right the first time.

Gotta love that Tennessee "soil" we lived in South Central Tennessee for a couple of years and it was soon hard to dig a hole, much less a trench 300' long! You had to have a pick ax to break into the ground and everywhere you dug, you gott tons of rock. Add to that the clay in the dirt that was really bad after any big rain. Sick all around your shoes when you walked through it.. Hated it.

My husband and I have been working on our single-wide M.H. for many years. We look at it from the perspective that it’s going to get done a little bit at a time. Slowly but surely we’ve made really good progress. We’re in our mid-60s so this kind of work is NOT for the faint of heart! BY FAR! But with perseverance and trust in God to get us through the difficult days we know we can overcome anything.
Proverbs 3:5-6 has become a “motto” around our house. When we acknowledge Him, He makes our efforts productive.
The things you two have accomplished are SO INCREDIBLE!!! You should never be discouraged. I know this has been really tough for y’all but don’t push it too hard. I’ve been watching you guys for a very long time and believe me you two are quite a team! With God in your corner you will always be successful! My husband and I are praying for you both. And equally as important……DO NOT NEGLECT EACH OTHER! Your love for one another should always come first (after Christ of course). Give each other a hug and tell each “I love you” (ON CAMERA)! ♥️ Believe me! People are watching YOU! Not just your project. Sending love and prayers to you, Sam & Angela. God Bless You both…………

I don't think I have ever seen both of you look so emotionally drained. Especially over a project.
It's not just financial costs, but also emotional costs, which are almost worse, and given you both are so hard working, and have put so much effort into setting up the land from scratch, it truly has been a massive test on your resolve.
I continue to watch your videos. Plus, I hope more people subscribe, and that the small amounts of revenue you get from that will help.
Wishing you all the best in getting the house site to the stage where you can finally get your official paperwork to move in... you've certainly earned the right to move into the house.

Hang in there Sam. It has been great watching your progress, although I know the electrical trench etc has you feeling defeated. It's ok to feel that way, you are only defeated if you give up, and that's not who you and Angela are. Nothing ever seems to go as any of us envision them going, all of us have regrets or woulda-shoulda-coulda moments. Keep plugging away, we will try to buy some extra stuff from your small business in the coming days. God loves ya and so do we. Blessings from Michigan.

I feel so bad for you guys! But hang in there and it will get done. For now just take one day at a time, get some rest and don’t worry so much. It is something that has to be done and you guys will win in the end! You have accomplished so much already and I’m impressed with your knowledge and the hard work you are not afraid to tackle. Keep up the good work and God bless.

When we build in 2001 there was electric already on our property. Luckily I had taken a picture of it as they moved it to the road when the house beside us was build so they had to put it on our property at there cost. We luck out on that. The electric co was not happy at all

Well defeating things happen in life all the time. My ex-husband once invested $6,000 dry hole instead of a well & the very same day came home to our rental & was putting in a new post for the mail box & thit a main water pipe for the subdivision & had a 2 hour geyers in our front yard. That was a defeating day too. I feel your pain. I love your show. I used to do what you are doing now.

We just finished building a home in middle Tennessee. We did none of the work ourselves. We also decided on underground. Our house is about 750 feet from the road. The man who did our digging and soil work also hit rock digging our power ditch. It took him 2 days once he got the hammer to finish. So remember that this is a tough job for the people who do it daily. You are doing an amazing job and to hire someone else to do it would have been even more than you estimated due to the rock (trust me!). I am so sorry for how hard this turned out for you both. You are an amazing team and are always positive even on the hard days. You are also teaching your boys that sometimes in life you hit rock. They will learn from you how to handle it and remember how you and Angela continue to work and move forward!! The silver lining for us was ending up with a ton of good size rocks to make a fire pit and to line several low places to help with drainage. :) Blessings to you both!

I’ve been following you guys for awhile now. This is my first comment. I love how y’all face things together, as one. Good or bad you guys face it together. You probably don’t realize it but, while you inform and entertain, the things you “teach” by example are sometimes more important. You encourage, support, share, and make time, for each other and your children. Without knowing it, your family provides a shining example to countless families that you’ll never know. This old world sure does need more families committed to each other, like yours. Thank you both for all that you do. God Bless.
