No insult to myself meant, but I wouldn't even get through the training to be a guardsman alive. The primer containing both genuinely useful advice, propaganda, and outright lies is a tactic used by real-life cults and extremist organisations in their material. It gives the victim enough 'good stuff' to hang a sincere and fairly justified belief on, while distorting their view of things enough to get them to behave as the cult needs. It hinges on the deeply human mistake of assuming that because page 113 is checkably true and that info has saved lives, pages 1 through 112 are also true in their entirety. That gives the primer a nice touch of realism, and shows how well researched the setting of 40K often is!
i read a book called, i think, 19 hours. even if it was set in a ork war zone, it suggested the average lifespan of a guardsman was 19 hours

I believe the guide book doesn’t mention chaos because the thing about chaos is the more people acknowledge it’s existence and talk about it, think about it, write and read about it, the more powerful it becomes.

Whilst the specifics of Chaos may not be known by the average Imperial Citizen, I think that "Ruinous Powers" is in fact a vague, widely known boogeyman enemy that the Imperium does propagandize about.
So while your average citizen will not understand what Chaos and Daemons are, they will recognize chaotic insignias (like the pointed star) as marks of the "Ruinous Powers".
The part "makes it clear that the Guardsmen are helpless against an armored vehicle" is useless when the commissar yells "Fix bayonets" at you as a Baneblade approaches

The Imperial Guard is actually unlikely to die in battle, if only because the Imperium has 1m planets and the vast, vast majority aren't being invaded at any particular time. The problem is that the Imperium itself is constantly losing all their guardsmen to starvation, disease, "insubordination", *REDACTED BY THE INQUISITION*, and so forth. If the Imperium had, say, "forced agricultural duty" instead of the guard, half of their problems would disappear overnight.
Logistics was a problem not cus the imperium was incompetent but the lack of stable warp travel. Generally, in a relatively peaceful world where a regiment is on guard duty/ furlough, and that world/subsector is not overburden with tens to hundreds of regiments, it would not be a problem for logistics and medical care.
When its a contested sector, where the local logistics are already unable to support the PDF units raised to stem an invasion, add the reinforcements of guard regiments, the logistical strain would break. Even if it has been planned, the supplies have to come from somewhere in the imperium. Supply is not constant and steady when warp travel is used. Piracy also poses an additional strain on the logistical train, and in contested zones in a war, supply to the frontlines are going to be even more vulnerable, from raiding parties to convoy ambushes.
Besides, the way the imperium strategy works in regards to planetary/sector defense, is that a world will handle its shit, if it gets bigger, the subsector will takeover, drawing manpower and supplies from the local subsector, then if that is too big, the main sector will takeover.
I used to think people just said the guard was the most badass as a WH40k meme, but the guard really is the most badass, space marines have nothing on a guardsman with stamped metal plates and a hand-me-down lasgun charging an ork waaaaaarg.

It seems like the commander is with courage in the imperial guards. Its a fact that when terrain is different then how to fight there 11:20 is different also. Its good to take cover, also run out from it, or else the enemy can catch the soldier in the open. Being rough and having gone through stuff 17:00 as a veteran guardsman, just means that they are special too. Just being there was enough to remind themselves that they are alive.
The meme of the guard being both incompintant and made of tissue paper is really fucked out the guard has quadrillions of men in it they do 99% of the winning of wars for the Imperium. That being said with the size of them it would stand that entire imperial armies would likely be raised and disband with seeing almost 0 action. In a personal note I always thought it would be kinda funny to read the journal of a Krieger sent to a paradise world where he was to deal with the fact he cannot martyr himself for the emperor

Same, was wondering why the thumbnail was recognisable. As much as you want to show the brutality and horrors of the 40k universe, It's tasteless to use pictures from our history. Even if in lore, every single type of units exist in the 40k universe, and a ww1 french style unit can exist in lore, that is what it is a fantasy lore.
There are many pictures, art that could be used but this is not it. Especially, after the war, the veterans who were disfigured and broken lived hard and terrible lives.
