    Super coincidental timing of this video! Canon Japan just announced this morning (I live in Japan / get their local business newsletters) new PRO-2600/4600/6600 models, and a new GP-200/300/2000/4000 line up (Also GP-[xyz]S line, formerly their PRO-[xyz]S line).
    On the topic of roll-paper, all of the new Pro and GP line models (even the "lower end" GP-200 and GP-300) are listed as supporting roll paper, with "2 tier" feeding and winding units.
    The GP-2000 and 4000 are also boasting world-first Pantone certified calibration for pastels and neons/flourescent colours, if that's of interest.
    Not sure if I can post links so I refrained, but if you're interested I can provide the link to the Japanese news/product page. Chrome does a fairly good job of translating the pages to English.
    Based on even the low-end GP models having roll-paper support and the price range they target, I'd be surprised not to see it on any other new Pro models coming down the pipeline.

    We really enjoy your channel. Hoping you might be able to help as we've searched high and low and there is not a lot of "good" information out there for our use case. We're a small business wanting to print on cardstock so we can generate oversized postcards which we can send via the United States Post Office without an envelope. We are looking at some sort of "tank" printer to save on ink costs. It would be nice if we could also have some sort of paper feed and maybe even duplex as we'll need to print addresses on the opposite side of the artwork/copy. We will not be printing photos - most prints will contain text and graphics. Thanks for any advice PS we've been looking at the Epson ET 5800 or 8550 but are concerned about the limitations of those models.

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  Před 2 měsíci +1

      There is only one printer I've looked at which even comes close to the sort of commercial print you want www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-wf-c8690-printer-review/
      None of the smaller printers will stack card - and nothing does duplex
      Getting the right quality card is also important - it needs to be rated for inkjet use, not just normal 'cardstock' [a word which flags up potential issues any time I see it in a question ;-) ]
      Do note the caveats and limitations mentioned in the review - this is the only printer of this sort I've tested, so others of this sort may do as well.

      @@KeithCooper I just got done reading your review in the link you responded with, thank you for taking time to reply! I had a Brother 8840DN that worked really well for a time, but it was monochrome and the print costs got to be quite high; it could handle really thick cardstock... it's it's so frustrating to see all of these tank models out there but none of them seem to have the ability to work well with heavier cardstock and their print speed seems quite slow.

    Hi,
    Thank you for giving touy impressions on this matter.
    I really find 10 years or so being too long in the tooth for technologies.
    Recently thanks to your reviews of Pro 200 and XP 15k I made up my mind.
    I'll probably go pigment ink some day, but it's a photography likewise process, better to start and learn low-key.
    I must say that I find it deceiving that Canon and Epson just don't give a roadmap of the printers release like any car industry is doing. So yes I'll go with the cheapest in case it would be needed to resell fast 🙄

    Hmmm i was thinking about getting either the canon pro 200 or 300. My mind was pretty much set on the pro 200 but when I started looking at what paper is available here, almost all high quality papers are made for pigment ink. They probably work just fine with dye inks as well but it seems I have more paper choices with the pro 300. Canson and Epson specifically state on their papers that they are made for pigment inks. Are there drawbacks of using these papers for dye inks? Pro 1000 is overkill for my needs.

    Hello Keith, hope you are doing well! I have a question about the Pro 1000, and the replacement of the print head. From reading reviews and such, consensus seems to be that one can count on having to replace the print head every 3 years, give or take, if you print regularly. Now, what I haven't found is information on how much ink it takes to replace the printhead. I wouldn't think it would have to do a complete purge of the ink cartridges, but its would have to fill up the new head, purge some air, plus the regular nozzle check and print head alignments. We know that to fill the complete system brand new, it takes about half of an 80ml cartridge, but any educated guesses on what the changing of the printhead takes? Is there any truth to something I heard from Jose, that the printhead on the P900 does not use the same technology as the Pro 1000 (thermal) so its not prone to have to be replaced at the same frequency? Much obliged!

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Yes, the 1000 head is a different technology, so is rated a 'consumable' The P700/900/5300 head is not expected to need changing for the life off the printer
      I never had one here long enough to try this, but I was told 10ml, but I've no certainty in that figure.
      I'd suggest asking on the printing forum at DPReview.com

      @@KeithCooper Thank you Keith, that's valuable information. I just saw that the official life of the printhead from Canon is actually 1-2 years. That's from a Canon expert on the Canon forums. That's definitely worth taking in to consideration but I rarely hear any reviews talk about it. The printhead here in Sweden is about £500, and then 10 ml of ink from 12 cartridge runs about £100 all in all, so £600 every 2-3 years if were lucky. Hmm. Maybe I should go back to the P900! 😅

    I recently bought Canon pro-300 and it's an amazing printer but the inks run out so quickly. I have some questions if someone have any suggestions.
    1. Should I let it go to auto sleep mode (seems like it completely turns off the printer cause I need to press power button to turn it back on) or better to keep it always on (power button light is always on just the display turns off). Some people recommended to disable auto sleep and just keep it always on but I'm not sure which is better option.
    2. Should I print nozzle check every other day? (I read that it goes into auto cleaning after 60h of not being used. When I was printing nozzle check every 1-2 weeks I was only able to print 2x A3 (B&W) prints and 2x A4 (Color) prints and it run out out of all 10 inks after like 3 months.

      When testing, I left it to turn off of its own accord.
      Unfortunately I don't have enough testing experience to be able to answer one way or the other with any certainty.
      However - this printer absolutely does not need a nozzle check that frequently - in fact I'd happily leave the printer several few weeks.

      I have the Pro 1000 since February and after lots of reading and CZcams watching decided to do two specific things. The first is using Qimage to send jobs to the printer and the other was purchasing the Precision Color Inks and Warning System. Qimage has a schedule option to do a nozzle check so you can leave your printer always on and as long as you load letter sized (or appropriate paper based on your country), it canl run a half or whole sheet nozzle check, which helps avoid the issue of letting it go through it's own maintenance after the 60h of no use. Thus you're saving lots of ink. The other thing is buying Precision Color inks and refilling my cartridges. It's a fraction of the cost of OEM and just as good as OEM.

    A topic that would be helpful to me would be sharpening photos for printing. I know that one-size-fit-all tutorials are not something that’s especially helpful. But are there general principles or guidelines or methods for sharpening depending on paper finish, print size, intended viewing environment, etc. Also, how do I know if I have oversharpened a photo I want to print? I’ve been experimenting a bit with Topaz Sharpening AI, and it seems to default to sharpening that’s too aggressive, for example.

    Uuwww yeah, scratchy photo papers, well i believe you it's pretty much unheard of in professional printing, but it is very much a thing in the realm of A4 home printing papers, i've got some that act like those scratch-off lottery tickets. They are otherwise decent, but laminating is a must. Kinda shady that their fragility is not clear upfront in the marketing babble. Buying branded is usually a safe method to avoid these hassles, but i've also found noname ridiculously cheap stuff a couple times which have coatings that just will not budge no matter how i attack them. As always, it is a matter of widely sampling that market to find what you need. And taking the time to leave some 1-star reviews when needed.

    There gotta be a limit from where a print is considered "diminished in quality, the end" by their standards... so when they say it was 75 expectancy, and now 200, it also means that the progressive weakening of colors is stretched out through a longer period of time. As it is not a 1bit process, it isn't like a print is perfectly fine one moment, you turn away, look back and poof, 75 years JUST passed, the print is now rubbish or gone. So happy 64, let's see 64 more, and in the meantime enjoy those long lasting prints that diminish just a sub-percent during your lifetime, instead of the earlier 3%...

So in constant gallery show off mode, it might be ridiculously lower. And three times ridiculously low just might get to a point of "adequate, at last".
