  • Back with my second reaction video, this time for Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Free Bird. Strangely, this is a song that I have never really encountered, let alone analyzed. This is a fresh reaction to some thing I’ve never really heard.
Hoping I can shed some musical insight and a little bit of instruction:)
Please leave comments for future song suggestions. I look forward to digging deep into some classic hits.

“I see a big solo coming up here...”. That was a bit of an understatement.

The finest live performance of any song by any band that I've ever witnessed, be it live or on video.

When you note that 'there's two different playing', what you are hearing is Collins' overdubbing a second lead. It works out great on the studio version. Rossington's comments on Collins' performance in the studio is worth listening to.

Crazy part. Allen wrote the music including the solo when he was like 16 or 17 years old

The rhythm section just pounding away keeping it all together during the guitar solo. Brilliant.

Rather than double-tracking at the beginning of the solo could it be two guitars because they had three guitarists ripping all the time?

Hey James thanks for the comment. Much appreciated, your comment made me second guess!!
So I did some further research. If you google “Hear Allen Collins' Isolated Guitar Solo from Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird"” (a Guitar World article), it mentions that it is indeed Allen Collins for the whole solo.
“When we put the solo together, we liked the sound of the two guitars, and I could’ve gone out and played it with him. But the way he was doin’ it, he was just so hot! He just did it once and did it again and it was done.”
It’s interesting, because live versions do include multiple guitar players soloing, but it appears that on this original studio recording, Mr. Collins did indeed do the whole thing himself.
      Thanks for watching!

Thanks for asking, I know that Skynyrd had the multiple guitarists so it’s definitely something worth looking into. Stay tuned!

If memory serves, the whole shouting "PLAY FREEBIRD" sarcastically at a band from the audience is a sort of meme. That might be why you hear it so often. I'll admit that I sometimes do it, but only jokingly to my musician friends, not strangers.
