  • Are you having a hard time reading the dipstick in you Nissan 350Z or Infiniti G35 with a VQ35DE engine? You're not the only one. It appears the dip stick was an after thought for this engine, possibly because it started off life having a FWD architecture. In this video we show you a really simple mod to help you read that dipstick.

    Love your videos. A couple more data points about the DE dipstick. (1) Historically, the 3.5l V6 in the 350z was a transplant from their front wheel drive, transversely mounted engines. So imagine that engine rotated 90 degrees and that dipstick would be front left without all the angles in the pull handle. this is the same reason the intake goes to the rear of the engine, as strange as that seems. (2) In that early DE engine, Nissan cheaped out a bit and ran the dipstick to the oil pan via an existing oil return passage from the head to the oil pan - I agree they did forget. So that's another reason that you can't get an accurate reading on the dipstick until the engine has been turned off for 5 minutes or so allowing for all of the oil to settle in the pan. This looks like a great method to allow the oil then to cling to the dipstick, but you should really wait 5-10 minutes after shutting off the engine to allow the head to drain. Otherwise oil from the head runs down the oil return passage and over the dipstick reading area making it look like there's plenty of oil in there when it may in fact be low . As stated elsewhere in these comments, on the HR engine, it's an entirely straight dipstick in its own conduit directly straight down into the oil pan. in front of the block and heads.

      Ur just creating a surface for oil to stick to not creating an accurate reading because oil is going to get STUCK to the dipstick from all levels not showing u where ur current level actually is so ur going to get full reading all the time...

    • @AnthonyJ350
      @AnthonyJ350  Před 2 lety +1

      @@howboutthis2110 If you let the oil settle, clean the dip stick and put it in again, you see the oil level. Where else will the oil come from? If you drive around and just check the oil immediately, yes you would get an inaccurate reading.

    another question...
    since the 350z and g35 are performance cars...is it a good idea to let the car warm for 10 to 15 minutes that way you will save on oil and have better performance....juss like to told the other guy that talk about consuming oil?

    • @AnthonyJ350
      @AnthonyJ350  Před 8 lety

      I let the car idle for about 30 seconds then I drive it. What I do though is drive it slow and easy until I get to operating temperature. Cars don't warm up that well just idling it, and the oil pump isn't slinging oil that much when just idling. Just wait 30 seconds, and drive it nice will the temp goes to normal.

    • @AnthonyJ350
      @AnthonyJ350  Před 8 lety

      Does yours consume oil? I think it depends on if it's daily driven in the city as well. Lots of high performance cars need to get to operating temperature so all the metals can expand. So if the pistons have contracted when cold you'll consume oil because it'll get past the piston rings.

    • @AnthonyJ350
      @AnthonyJ350  Před 8 lety

      Mine probably consumes roughly that amount, maybe a bit less. I find when I open my catch can a lot comes out. so I think I'm losing it through the PCV system.

    • @hostilityy
      @hostilityy Před 8 lety

      +AnthonyJ350 I I check me oil level with dipstick once a month and it's always same level.. Every engine burns some. I'm guessing mine probly burns 1cup every 5k miles cos I almost fill the 5qt jug with the dirty oil after every oil change I do.

      Yeah, which is another thing the british screwed up in language lol... They say things different to better suit their accent, its quite dumb. For instance, Aluminum was "found" by a british geologist. He called it "Al-oom-in-um", like we in the US call it. But 5 years later or so he renamed it "Al-oo-mini-um" because it sounded better in the british accent. WHich is why they think they say it right over there, but they dont.
      For Z=Zed, they say it comes from Zeta, the Greek letter "Z", which became Zede in france and the brits grabbed it from the french, Zed. But in reality, Zeta is pronounced Zee-Tah, so they are wrong and the US pronunciation is correct, again...
      Its really silly, considering the english originated in their areas and not ours, but we say things more correctly than they do. But dont tell them that, they will become offended and argue with you tooth and nail. lol
