I've always felt that Band Maid suffers from what I call the "Oversupply of Superstars Phenomenon". Quick analogy, using basketball. Your team gets a superstar -- fine, everybody wants one (in most cases, there is little real resentment from others). You get a second superstar -- outwardly, everybody says the right things -- but some resentment is starting to grow. You get a third superstar -- an excess of riches (more resentment, with some people arguing that your third superstar isn't really a superstar). You get a fourth superstar -- now the resentment is more open from certain quarters, with many people insisting that your fourth superstar is DEFINITELY not a superstar. If you get a fifth superstar -- jealousy runs amok, with many people insisting that your team is overrated. How does this relate to Band Maid? Fairly early on, both Akane and Misa were getting strong critical reviews, and people began to talk about them as true stars. Since there can't be a third -- much less a fourth -- true star, Kanami and Saiki were generally said to be good, but that's it. But, as Kanami kept relentlessly getting better, some started to admit the Kanami just might be a rising star (though many took any opportunity to slag her, and to insist that she was overrated). As such assertions became ever more absurd, Kanami started to get general recognition as a true star in the making. Which meant that Saiki was given short shrift as "good" (or was just ignored). Poor Miku, just learning to play the guitar, had to endure grossly unfair criticism, some even insisting that she was 'dead weight" that should be kicked out of the band. Finally, often grudgingly, Saiki started to get the recognition that she had deserved for so long. Although some people admitted that Miku was "getting good", many just ignored her, or still spoke ill of her. Very belatedly, as COVID started to fade from daily conversation, Miku started to get significant praise, and most of her critics fell silent. Five stars -- what to do? For some, it was time to start preaching that Band Maid -- as a whole -- was overrated. Now, even that absurd criticism is dying off. Five stars. Some people cheer, some walk away, some still slag them. Five stars. Live with reality, people! Band Maid Forever!!!!!
Yes, Shambles is the Akane show with special guest stars Kanami, MISA, Saiki and Miku. But wait! Was it really the Kanami show, because she wrote the song and played it with such forcefulness and exquisite abandon. Or was it the MISA show because without MISA, the rapturous drive of the song would be a ride on four flat tires. Or was it the Saiki show because she focused the sonic chaos into a song with melodies that could express Miku's lyrics like no other singer could. Without Saiki, Shambles might sound like a familiar instrumental. Or was it the Miku show because, damn, she wrote the lyrics, played the important rhythm parts, and added her unique brand of backup vocals that have become a defining "sixth instrument" of Band-Maid.
So exactly whose show was it? It was the Maid's show, as usual! 🤘🎀🤘 Thx, Mighty-A!
The first time I saw this was in a week when I've been rushing around seeing bands, and I wasn't totally sold, but I think it's going to be a grower for me. As for those bands I saw, I mainly went for Rumkicks on their UK tour, but they were touring with another South Korean band, 18Fevers. This band is two Korean women, and two American guys who live out there - very good friends with Rumkicks, but a different style with a harder/darker sound, like a mix of punk/metal/rock. This song is called "Gatekeeper", and is about narrow-minded punk fans who think they have the right to 'police' the scene. czcams.com/video/Y848bhSgGhQ/video.html Yeawon from Rumkicks, without spikes, appears in the MV too. Note that the chorus does contain one four-letter word, so if you'd prefer one that doesn't, pick another such as 'Danse Macabre' instead.
G.O.A.T. might be strong. But it is an absolute banger! I hope it makes the set on Tuesday in Denver.
