On this episode of Film Club, A.V. Club critics A.A. Dowd and Ignatiy Vishnevetsky talk about Last Flag Flying, Richard Linklater’s spiritual sequel (of sorts) to the classic Hal Ashby film The Last Detail. It’s billed as the hangout-flick master’s first proper road movie, a 2003-set drama about three Vietnam veterans who reunite after 30 years after one of them loses a son in the Iraq War. Our critics found it slow and heavy-handed in spots, but say that it benefits from Linklater’s mellow, melancholy direction and a trio of strong performances from Bryan Cranston, Laurence Fishburne, and Steve Carell.
