Horrortale is an Undertale Alternate Universe, which describes the events happening after one of neutral endings. The plot takes place after the Exiled Queen ending, where Toriel retakes the throne, but Undyne exiled her back to the ruins and ascended the throne herself, driven by the growing desire to destroy humanity. Her rule was exceptionally cruel, and after some time the Underground has come to its downfall. Total luck of food has made monsters eat human falling from the surface, and because of it almost all of them have gone mad. Now they’re extremely desperate after the many failed attempts to reach the Surface.
The main hero is 9-12 years old Aliza. She is a weak and shy girl, so she can’t fight the monsters, but she can be cruel. The girl fell in the Underground long time after the neutral run. Has nothing to do with the main hero of Undertale. Aliza’s soul is Perseverance\Fear. - Hry

It's so sad that Toriel completely doesn't trust any monster anymore-- so she kills them without a second thought because she assumes they are all horrible. However, she cares greatly for humans.
What a tragic woman. She just needs help. She's so traumatized...

I like the fact that despite Toriel being completely insane in this game (along with everyone else) she still has that "motherly love" in her heart

@Shelincy Williams That sounds feasible, until you remember that Frisk eats nothing but monster food throughout the game without any adverse effects. Unless there was something else going on to fuck up the monster's food, then my money is on the possibility that Toriel poisoned Aliza in an attempt to keep her in the Ruins.
@Shelincy Williams Actually, Toriel made butterscotch-cinnamon pie. It wasn't JUST cinnamon. And even then butterscotch is still edible just fine. If there was too much butterscotch the most that would happen is that Aliza would have gotten a tummy ache. But there is no evidence to point to it being the butterscotch. You may be thinking of buttercup flowers, which *are* actually poisonous.

Headcanon: Aliza's soul would've been patience if she wasn't so fearful. Both involve stagnation and waiting to a degree, and the colors seem very similar, moreso than her soul and perseverance.

@@cyanisnicelol I mean like if we could identify her as a canon soul, not the one thats already dead. But even then it would've restarted a cycle. It started with Determination, then Patience, Bravery, Integrity, Perseverance, Kindness, Justice, then back to Determination with Frisk. So if we follow that logic next in the cycle would be Patience. But again this all an "if it wasn't fear" situation.

This is an especific neutral route in wich you don't befriend Undyne, so most monsters believe that you killed him even if you didn't

“all fallen humans are considered friendly until proven otherwise” or something like that.
basically, you befriend the human, and if they try to harm you or other monsters then they would have permission to kill them

I feel this ended too abruptly, but I can still understand the ending: Toriel, already having lost sanity, has grown a deep hatred for all monsters and kills them all on sight, and because of that, she is alone. It's likely that all the children who fell before Aliza caught on to this and left (only to die by the hands of monsters under Undyne's rule). She can't bear to see yet another human child leave her, so she poisons Aliza, making her fall ill and rely on her care, so that she can never leave. It's a rather twisted and depressing story.
Although, I couldn't really piece together the "secret" rooms, especially the one with Napstablook's smashed headphones and the soggy posters of Mettaton. I understand that the one room with Azriel's photo is probably a shrine for him.
Definitely curious about the locked room...
...and wondering why the key was never used for anything.

This isn’t scary, it’s just really depressing. Flowey is hopeless, Toriel has gone off the deep end, the ruins are deserted and rotting, and I assume Napstablook is either dead somehow or has locked himself away in that door.

The OG undertale implied monsters can be quite resilient against all magical attacks and physical attacks by other monsters, but are basically powerless against physical attacks by humans so even a kid with enough strength can seriously injure or even kill a strong monster

I'm pretty sure monsters are literally made of magic though, rather than having physical bodies, so they can't do physical attacks, they're just weak against them. I think there's a plaque somewhere that says "While monsters are made of magic humans are mostly made of water", haha.
@@duskmare0000 yeah, there was something to that effect that implied humans are more "tangible" than monsters. Humans also possess Determination with is such powerful energy that monster bodies can't even absorb it properly without losing cohesion and melting away.
If you played undertale,at Asgore's house you pick the locket and the knife,so you don't really beat him out with a stick.
I feel like the crack in sans' skull proves he has more than a single hp. I mean it makes sense when you think about it that he could have more. He wasn't even close to expecting that last hit, much like a betrayal kill. So you can argue Sans has more than a single hp. Plus he did have 1 def so that contributed to the one hit ko.
And you do like 9999 damage per hit in genocide
In the games code he only has 1 HP. Plus the crack in his skull in this doesn’t matter since this isn’t an official Undertale game.

Neutral: spare some, kill some. In pre-Horortale Undyne was spared, Papyrus was spared, Toriel was spared and Mettaton was spared but someone was killed because only then Undyne overthrows Toriel.

Alicia Cordero monster food can’t harm humans. Toriel poisoned it to keep Aliza sick so she couldn’t leave. She didn’t want to kill Aliza, but she wanted to make sure Aliza couldn’t escape.
Monster food is essentially pure energy but with flavor. It's the reason why Frisk could have their flesh burned off but a monster sandwich heals their wounds.

This is my first time learning about horrortale.
And right off the bat, the concept of a story after a neutral route, undyne taking over the throne, it became... very... VERY....

The old horrortale makes you feel fear. It makes you fear the threats of the ruins, it makes you fear Toriel.
This horrortale shows you what fear is and what is does to a person. What its done to Toriel, what its done to you.

There should be more Fan games like this that focus on the aftermath of neutral endings. A lot of them focus on genocide with sans and chara, and some are with pacifist, but neutral is ripe for creativity
I like how the text noticably shifts when you get to toriels house, as you are in a much better mood
I like how in horrortale Aliza has more of a personality, it gives the story a nice kick to it that u can’t really find in other aus.

That's because Frisk was never meant to have a personality. Frisk is a reflection of you. If Frisk had a reaction to everything that happened, it would imply that it's how you, the player, is meant to feel. That's why he has the blank -_- expression for the whole game. How you feel is how he feels. If you feel good about killing Toriel, Frisk feels good about murdering Toriel. If you feel bad about killing Toriel, Frisk feels bad too.
In other words, His personality is your personality.
@Kacperindigo well actually frisk does have a personality, frisk has been confirmed to be controlled by the PLAYER the same goes with Kris from Deltarune, both have personalities when viewed from a monster’s POV or a character in that game’s POV but when we see them they don’t show much expressions. However I do agree Aliza is def more expressive

I like how the pixel style matches the original game, but i really liked the demo version of the art much more. It was just so different from the rest of the fan-made games and it sent more chills up my spine. Idk my opinion.

maaaaan it mega sucks that this got cancelled. this dev team had such a strong, unique vision for the AU and nailed the execution, and i don’t know if i can imagine any other fangames coming close
Seeing all the characters and places I’ve come to love all worn out, tired and old makes me a little sad honestly. Really well designed to convey the feeling of hopelessness and a time long forgotten that children before you took advantage of.

Agree, but the kids were probably more surviving rather than taking advantage of the world the monsters lived in. As far as we know, Frisk only killed Asgore and the other children were killed.

Aliza is one of the most depressing character. I don’t think I’ve seen much characters go through as much suffering as her. I absolutely hate horrortale sans and his stans.
This is really interesting and adds some new and unique ideas. Changing characters ever so slightly makes them seem like entirely different people, and you really feel for the fearful, anxious, young Aliza.

Sad to see this project cancelled. Looked cool
To anyone curious as to why it was cancelled, the creators are Russian. Right now Russia is in a bad state due to the war against Ukraine (remember that Putin is a jerk and most Russians don’t support the war). As such there’s a lot of issues, the internet is getting closed off, they’re working on college work rather than having free time in high school.
They want to return one day.

Realistically Toriel might be able to whoop Undyne in a fight considering how powerful she was when she wasn’t even trying to kill you
I believe Toriel peacefully gave her up her throne to avoid fighting.

I know I'm really late, but I just have to point out how good the music is.
Also, the vignettes are so gorgeously drawn.
The graphics and dialogue are fantastic!

I just started to watch the walkthrough, and I can already see a part where Toriel is trying to sort of manipulate you. (17:41). Here, she says "Together we can do anything!" It's lovely to see that Toriel is still the loving Toriel that we know and love from the original game, but that line is already giving me red flags. Edit: At 27:11, you can see that everything Toriel had in the original game is hidden away. When you watch more, at 28:43, you can see a photo album that's also hidden, along with a music box. When they open the photo album, you can see a photo of Toriel, Asgore, Asriel, and Chara. I'm not sure if the reason why Toriel hid everything was due to Frisk's betrayal, or Toriel wanted to forget the memories. At 38:59, you, the character, start to cough, causing you to get very sick. As other people stated in the comments, Toriel poisoned you, causing you to rely on her in order for you to regain your strength, meaning that Toriel wants to make you stay.
i think toriel knew what she did and killed flowey cause she knew that he would help aliza escape the underground so she killed flowey and poisoned aliza

One thing slightly bugs me, according to a monster you can speak to in Snowdin, monster food turns into pure energy on consumption; even if it didn’t it has quit the opposite effect because it Heals some missing hp, and the pie heals you fully.
